Been playing with WitP this weekend - my first wargame.

A question for the veterans ... should one play UV first before WitP to assist with the learning curve to handle the game mechcanics i.e. is it easier to get into the game and to use it as a stepping stone to WitP?

Thanks ... Mav

You don't need to. Just start with the Coral Sea scenario and go from there. Try playing several scenarios as the Allies first before jumping to the Japanese, especially if its a scenario that requires production control.

Go to Spooky's website. There is a "tip" file there that should help with learning the basics.

A number of us played UV before WITP, but that was because UV existed for 2-3 years before WITP ... however, I agree with Chez that it isn't necessary because you can get your feet wet playing against the AI or with the scenarios ... but I definitely recommend trying a campaign game against the AI before playing a "real game" ( PBEM ) as the human will be much more sneaky and it will help you get used to the pace and the planning necessary to get things done. If you're used to "shooters" .. the pace in the campaign game will seem "glacial" .. but it does simulate the real war, where logistics buildups were the primary activity - and combat was in essence a punctuation mark ( albeit a bloody one ).

It's more like a tsunami when it comes to PBEM JW.

Look out when playing a PBEM Maverick.
The tempo of the game is 2-3 times faster than the real war.

I would concur that there is little need to play UV first. WitP is basically the same game except on steroids! There's also a short tutorial scenario (short in relative terms) which might be of help. Definitely read the e-book manual and the forums are also a good place for tips from those already in the know. Usually when I have a question about something I'll post it to forums and there is almost always someone out there who has the answer.

Jeez - WitP as first wargame? I had 15 years of wargaming experience under my belt - and still had a look like this > on my face the first time I started WitP!

But I agree with the posters above, no need for UV, just read the manual about 10 times, use the goodies at Spooky's and start with a small scenario. Have fun!

Always did like the deep end of the pool!

Its not too bad ... been interested in the pacific theatre during WW2 for a while and it is quite fun. The manual is getting quite a lot of use at the moment though. I am compiling a list of questions to post in a week's time or so!

Damn, Mav. There's the deep end, and then there's the DEEP end! Welcome to the wonderful world of WitP; it'll eat all your free time and then some.

If you're not familiar with the Pacific War, I suggest using the spare time that you would have playing UV to reading an overview book such as Dan van der Vat's The Pacific Campaign. If you're familiar with the war, then I suggest reading a few of the Army Green Books, especially Global Logistics and Strategy: 1940-1943 by Richard Leighton, that will enrich your gameplay experience.

I also concur with ChezDaJez..............Expect to "start" about 4 or 5 times and restart, before you really get the hang of it, because everytime you discover a different nuance of the game,(details), you will restart just to see how well you can do with these new found "toys"......................
BTW,welcome to the Pacific and keep food handy.............
