Yup. I sit corrected. This is not a Defiant. But while I'm here eating humble pie, is it my imagination or is this plane missing its canopy? There seem to be guide rails behind the cockpit to hold the canopy but the dang canopy just ain't there.

Part of the Roc's (and the Defiant's, for that matter) upper fuselage retracted to allow the gun turret to rotate fully. The three aircraft pictured all have different settings displayed for the camera.

Actually I like the Defiant also... but I can't figure out why the closest one has a bent starboard wing
it's the negro pilot,a black thang

Probably looked pretty good to the 3 British soldiers and the pilot of the L-1 shot down 100 miles behind enemy lines when Lt. Carter Harmon, preparing the way for the Jolly Green Giants, performed the first helicopter rescue mission on Apr 25-26, 1944

The Blackburn Roc (pictured above) and the Blackburn Skua were both Royal Navy Fleet Air Arm aircraft. The Boulton Paul Defiant was a RAF aircraft, and actually quite attractive considering the gun turret.

Good point, and this guy was a real looker except for his nose

Re. the Defiant, I think it is a mixture of discordant design elements and just plain stupid engineering decisions. It is UGLY!

That French bomber is incomprehensibly ugly. It looks liek a boy scout troop put together some corrugated roofing with leftovers from a backyard greenhouse kit. I doubt the LSD theory. Timothy Leary could ahve done better than that.

Good Lord! The guys on the production line shold have refused to build it, or at least stopped after the first one.

funnily enough not many were made, it was a plane that was obsolete as soon as it flew. the biplane design does make me wonder where the bomb bay is located and did the lower wing ever get in the way of the bomb load when it was being droppped

the 1930's was a period of transition for aircraft designers, look at the brilliance of designs such as the Spitfire, Bf109, B17 etc and compare it to the Heyford... luckily Handley Page do redeem themselves with the Halifax bomber during WW2

Lol. It was so ugly that it had to be build upside-down.

Almost anything from Blackburn and General Aircraft, or their predecessors, stands a decent shot at the title.

The Skua/Roc is actually pretty good by Blackburn standards; some of the inter-war stuff was diabolical. They must have shot the entire design office after the war, because there's no way anyone with a hand in that lot was in the same room as a Buccaneer blueprint.....

If I can sort out how to upload, I'll post an example of their 'art'.....

this is a Blackburn 'B20'. It's a Seaplane thingie .....

Teriminus;

Sure it looks funny when in the employ of the USCG, but you need to appreciate the industrial design and marketing benefits too.

thats a pretty airplane but why bother with an aerodynamic engine nacelle, when the cockpit had the aerodynamic qualities of a brick !

Compared to some of the abominations we've seen so far, the Warthog is a regular Spitfire!

Just saw "Richard III" movie (MGM 1995 with Ian McKellan). This was done using the original dialogue, but with costumes, props pretty much from the interwar (mid -late 30's) period (of course with lots of anachronisms).

In the latter part of the movie, the Queen-Mother gets on the most spectacularly ugly airplane i've seen in motion - some sort of hideous biplane transport that the Handley Page Handford brought to mind. Unfortunately, AFAIK, they did not give a credit to the airplane (but i'd sure like to know what it was!) Anyone else see this or know what it was? (The movie is playing on Starz or Showtime this month).

That was a most peculiar movie! Unfortunately, I don't remember the airplane, but that might be findable...
