In the respective shipside folders, there are 19 copies each of the Yamato and Iowa class shipsides. Why?

Yeah, I'll probably be "disappeared" now, for bringing this into the light...

No spam here, seeing as how this is my thread, and I'm certainly not a spammer. Still haven't gotten an answer to my original question, though...

I have no answer but it doesn't matter. It's probably just cruft left over from someone's file manipulations at some point in the distant past. Like the "BTR" strings in the code ... ;)

I was on deployment with VP-5 to Keflavik, Iceland in 1975 and we were flying an ice patrol along the west coast of Grrenland when we had an overspeed on #3 engine. We made a precautionary landing in Thule, Greenland and ended up spending the "night" (it was June so there wasn't any "night"). They didn't have enough barracks space for us so they put us up in an old Quonset hut that was half buried in snow and ice. We had to dig out an area in front of the door just to get in. Inside there was an old coal-fired stove that was to provide heat but the coal was buried in the snow outside. Being junior man on the crew at the time, you can guess who got to dig it out and keep the stove going all night.

Learned that the runway is painted white! Thought that was dumb, white runway on white snow and ice. Never did learn why though.

Spent 1982-83 in Keflavik with the good old USMC. I hear they've largely shut the whole place down, now ... :-(

I did 2 deployments to Keflavik; the first with VP-5 in 1975, the second with VP-40 in 1985. I used to hang out at the MarBar there... good food!

I believe patrol squadrons still deploy to Kef but I'm pretty much out of touch with the tempo of ops up there anymore.

The 85 deployment was very interesting. The Soviets sortied about a dozen SSNs and SSGNs into the Norweigian Sea and North Atlantic in May along with the usual transitting boomers. It was a major Soviet exercise and we flew our butts off against them. We racked up more constructive kills against those subs than anyone has before or since. IIRC, a Brit Nimrod squadron (203 or 206, can't remember) from Kinloss augmented us. It was a blast watching the Brits in action. Those guys were good!

Hi Chez -

A thought on the 'white runway'. Could it be that they wanted to reflect the sun back to prevent heat building up and melting the snow/ice?

Regards,

Steven

Yeah, that may be it. I know that asphalt runways built up on permafrost are sometimes painted white to reduce thaw penetration and resulting subsidence of the runway surface. That would be true at Thule, but isn't Keflavik built on rock?
