My uncle was stationed in Greenland when he was in the Army in the early 60's ... he was told there was a girl behind every tree there I was on deployment with VP-5 to Keflavik, Iceland in 1975 and we were flying an ice patrol along the west coast of Grrenland when we had an overspeed on #3 engine. We made a precautionary landing in Thule, Greenland and ended up spending the "night" (it was June so there wasn't any "night"). They didn't have enough barracks space for us so they put us up in an old Quonset hut that was half buried in snow and ice. We had to dig out an area in front of the door just to get in. Inside there was an old coal-fired stove that was to provide heat but the coal was buried in the snow outside. Being junior man on the crew at the time, you can guess who got to dig it out and keep the stove going all night. Learned that the runway is painted white! Thought that was dumb, white runway on white snow and ice. Never did learn why though. Chez
