How does WitP search patters work?

If I have PBY's on 100% search do they actually cover a 360 degree circler pattern and actually take time to reach the extent of their range, or is it some caculation the game makes with the ammount of planes that could potentialy see the target, the size of the target, the weather, and whatever else?

Does Naval Search account for an area thats off-map, or would the search be more concentrated in the on-map area.

Does reducing the percentage of "Naval Search" effect the range of the search?

Will "Naval Search" spot land units? In particular would Naval Search have any effect what-so-ever in the middle of China?

Also,

Would a carrier TF with 4 groups of SBD's set to 20% search combine their planes into the over all search effort, or does WitP only account for search on a group to group basis? Does Naval Search account for planes by the group, ship, TF, hex....?

Thanks

If you can answer that, you have uncovered one of the great mysteries of the game

The persentage is the number of planes that fly the mission.

If you restrict their range, it concentrates the search more.

Now wait just a minute. Didn't Apollo do some tests and find that it wasn't true? Technically he "may" (I'm not sure) had been doing ASW duty with various planes but was finding the results for further ranges were actually better/same instead.

How do you arrange for Catalinas to be shot down? The buggers are flying like mousquitos all over the ocean and nothing bad ever happens to them except one damaged by flak.

You probably have to have your fighters on some CAP reaching to that hex.

You need a LOT of fighters concentrated in one single hex at 6/7k ft to shoot down a catalinas. Usually it happens to me when they bounce on the KB...but a cap of 200 zeros only kills one or 2 cats...

Hi all,

360 degrees full circle.

Range is determined by user selected RANGE value.

Please note that in my tests (last week or so) I found some "funny" results - the best search was always when MAX range was used (i.e. shortening the range to increase the aircraft vs. area covered is, apparently, not implemented in WitP and UV)...

just thinking out loud here, but does the 360 circle search mean that search planes are getting cheated out of a higher percentage chance to find something if they are based on the edge of a large land mass and are only really interested in searching a hemisphere of water instead of the full circle, which would mean some useless search being done over land? hmmm, sounds like a test for apollo

(my english teacher would kill me if she knew i wrote a sentence that long...)

Thanks for the imput. I guess there's not much information on this. I get the feeling that an official explination wont happen, so good luck with future tests Apollo and hopefully you can uncover something. If/when you do, please share.

The short answer to the search question is yup.

The sad thing is that even the old SPI game Fast Carriers modelled this better. You could progressively narrow a search pattern and get more and more reward for it... at risk, of course. I appreciate the need for compromise but this has always struck me as something that could do with a tweak. Mark you, the players' workload would go up a lot.

Steve.

Which is part of why you wont see it. WitP's incredible detail often disquises the simple fact that this is not a carrier game or a tactical wargame, but an operational level wargame covering the whole war. The kind of control often desired over search and naval targeting belongs to a tactical wargame such as the one you mentioned, or earlier titles like Carrier Strike/Force and Carriers at War
