Here it is folks the score that really counts. No it's not the Japanese autovictory, it is the number of hits per post on the AARs:

If your new to the game or considering buying it you might want to read some of the most popular ones. This is not a complete sample, I am too lazy for that, but it is a fair list of top performers.

Tom's list is somewhat biased towards how long each particular game has been going. PzB and Wobbly's AAR (which I will say is an excellent read) has been going for quite some time and AFAIK, they haven't upgraded game versions.

There are many other excellent AARs that didn't make the list simply because they are still early in their game.

There are also some very good players who simply don't post an AAR due to the time requirements to produce a good one. I'm not very good but I wouldn't mind posting an AAR from my PBEM but as a full-time nursing student, I simply do not have the time anymore.

I think there is a small bias for longer running games, that is why Aussi and PzB are so high, but the reason I went for hits divided by posts was that it gives a good idea of an AARs popularity even if it is new. For example the Lunacy AARs are relatively new and Hoepner Vs. Hawker is very new but they all seem pretty popular. EUB Vs. Sprior has been going on for a while and I enjoy reading it but it does not have as many hits.

The ones with high hit numbers are the ones people are checking often, too see what happens. I think the others get read but in my own case I tend to check in on EUB once a week or so.

Adm Laurent's game got a lot of hits because he went after Pearl right away. PzB got the attention for taking out India, Fear and Loathing is popular for reasons I cannot explain. Or perhaps dare not explain since it involves voodoo ritual and biting the heads off of live chickens, bats and Ozzie Osborne. One of our guys out in California took care of Ozzie, at least he said he did, if the Allies win then the ritual worked. I just hope he rememberd to put Roland the Headless Thompson Gunner on the stereo while he did it. Sorry I am digressing, or giving away tactical secrets or both.

I am not sure why, but my AAR( weak as it is ) titled 'Nomad pinch hits against PzB' scores 38 or so. Did you include it in PzBs?

mine's not good. I was hoping after changing the style of writing of my AAR vs swift that more people would read it. Y'all still not like the 'newer' style?

My aim in writing it is so people can enjoy my game too. You want me to change anything on it at all?

Speedy....."me ole china"........your AAR is fine, and a good read....you must remember that all team AARs including "fear and loathing" with which I'm involved get more hits because of the number of people involved....once anybody, including me, stop cutting and pasting combat reports...the AAR gets better.

Keep going, many are reading, if not posting.

Just to point out quite honestly that Sebastian Flashman doesn't care about the hits ratio, he is quite enjoying himself anyway in 'The Sun Never Sets'... not that anyone would want to read this anyway as its mainly about him.... though on rare occasions those Jap guys do try to claim some credit for some minor success.

However, as Jean-Paul Sartre points out in "What is Literature", a writer writes in order to be read. I'm guilty as charged.

What others?

However, again, as our boy Sartre points out, there can be no other rational explanation for the feeling of shame than the presence in the world of others who are there to witness our actions. Actually my favorite philosopher is probably Epictetus, though I also subscribe to Epicurean and Sceptic tendencies.

ah and while we are on the subject of Philosophers... Didactylos, my hero!

His philosophy was a mixture of three famous schools, the Cynics, the Stoics, and the Epicureans, and summed up all three of them in his famous phrase,
"You can't trust any bugger further than you can throw him, and there's nothing you can do about it, so let's have a drink. Mine's a double, if you're buying. Thank you.'

How about a vote for slickest, best appearing AARs? I would put Fear and Loathing Allies #1 by far, and Iron Storm would definitely rank high on that list. And of course, being the vain person I am, I would include both Our Finest Hour and Brink of Disaster somewhere just below them, but, nevertheless on the list. Of course my writing isn't the greatest. I just need to find the time to do AARs anymore. Between sleeping, work and my jet setting social life on these message boards...

Did you go to Key West? They need to make Deutsch the second language down there me thinks. When I moved to Florida I couldn't believe how many Europeans like to come here.

I work for a real estate title company (alas just the receptionist ) and we've been closing a lot of new homes to Brits who are buying and then renting them out here. Fortunately, though I no hablo espanol, I speak broken British.

Never heard of Didactylos but I like the fusion of Cynicism, Stoicism and Epicureanism. Make mine a diet Coke or Pepsi.

This brings up a good question...

What do you guys look for in an AAR? Anything that makes it more interesting?

For me, I prefer AARs that have operational/strategic maps attached with them. As well as explanations of why the combatants are doing what they are doing with discussions of ongoing strategery.

I strongly dislike, no... abhor is a better word, the AAR which is nothing but Combat Reports. Bleh. Anyone can do that...

Thanks Fabertong. As mentioned I have changed it a lot nowadays to make it more readable with no combat replays and more pics.

End of the day if peeps aren't fussed about it i'll let it drop but anyhow i'll carry on for now unless persuaded otherwise.......Noumea

To write a good AAR you need plenty of time, but above all a decent english. Consider guys that many of the people that are writing AARs are non-english-born speakers...it's a lot easier to explain yourself with some of the Action Reports cut and pasted.... I've tried to eliminate most of the combat reports from my AARs, but still i need them cause it would simply be too difficult for me to find the right words to say something....
However i think a good AAR needs to be understandable...so full of maps and screenshots. It's like when you read a book and there isn't any map...i go crazy!!!

In Reply to Nomad: I left the other side of the Clash of Steel AARs out because there are 3 of them. This may not have been fair, but since it's my spreadsheet I reserve the right to be unfair dammit!

Seriously, no offense intended.

And I very strongly agree with Alikchi and Hoepner pictures are worth a lot. In my personal AARs I post maps and statistics pretty often, and in Fear and Loathing I scour the web photos and for war art from time to time (the art is something I should do more often).

I agree that the AAR must be understandable but I would hope that wouldn't stop someone who doesn't write English as well as a native English speaker. Seriously, I'm amazed at times at how well many players such as yourself write in English. Even when it's not the best use of words, it's still completly understandable. I only wish that I could do the same in Spanish, a language that I studied for 4 years and and had to use when I lived in Spain for over 3 years. I can barely read it let alone speak and write it.

What makes an AAR interesting? Strategy and tactics! I read them to learn what other players do. So commentary illustrated with maps and graphics help to keep me oriented to the situation and allows me to see the big picture at a glance. That doesn't mean I need a graphic or map with every post but just often enough to where the strategic trend becomes apparent. Tactical maps of battles fought are also very interesting, especially when illlustrated with arrows and timelines. If you are planning an offensive somewhere, I would love to read what your objectives are and what plans you have for when things don't go as you wish. I want to hear your thoughts and comments and how you perceive things are going.

Style and content are important too. It doesn't have to be written from a supreme commander or news reporter viewpoint though I prefer those. One of the best I read however was a first-person account of the war through the eyes of a Zero pilot. I don't remember who wrote it but it was very good. Try something different.

You should also avoid "cut and paste" combat reports whenever possible. Use only pertinent parts of the combat report to reinforce the commentary and please edit them. Reading a long combat report is boring, especially when it is filled with dozens of lines that read "6 x B-17E Fortress bombing at 6000 feet." Reduce it down. Take the following report:

Day Air attack on Kendari , at 33,71

Allied aircraft
F-5A Lightning x 6
B-17E Fortress x 206
B-24D Liberator x 85

Allied aircraft losses
B-17E Fortress: 12 damaged
B-24D Liberator: 4 damaged

Japanese Ships
CL Nagara, Bomb hits 24, on fire, heavy damage
DD Michishio, Bomb hits 1
DD Murasame, Bomb hits 2, on fire, heavy damage

Japanese ground losses:
174 casualties reported
Guns lost 2

Port hits 21
Port supply hits 9

Aircraft Attacking:
36 x B-17E Fortress bombing at 6000 feet
42 x B-17E Fortress bombing at 6000 feet
27 x B-17E Fortress bombing at 6000 feet
27 x B-17E Fortress bombing at 6000 feet
20 x B-24D Liberator bombing at 6000 feet
20 x B-24D Liberator bombing at 6000 feet
12 x B-17E Fortress bombing at 6000 feet
6 x B-17E Fortress bombing at 6000 feet
8 x B-17E Fortress bombing at 6000 feet
8 x B-17E Fortress bombing at 6000 feet
15 x B-24D Liberator bombing at 6000 feet
9 x B-24D Liberator bombing at 6000 feet
4 x B-17E Fortress bombing at 6000 feet
3 x B-17E Fortress bombing at 6000 feet
5 x B-17E Fortress bombing at 6000 feet
9 x B-17E Fortress bombing at 6000 feet
6 x B-24D Liberator bombing at 6000 feet
3 x B-17E Fortress bombing at 6000 feet
3 x B-17E Fortress bombing at 6000 feet
3 x B-17E Fortress bombing at 6000 feet
5 x B-17E Fortress bombing at 6000 feet
3 x B-24D Liberator bombing at 6000 feet
3 x B-24D Liberator bombing at 6000 feet
3 x B-24D Liberator bombing at 6000 feet
2 x B-17E Fortress bombing at 6000 feet
3 x B-17E Fortress bombing at 6000 feet
3 x B-24D Liberator bombing at 6000 feet
3 x B-24D Liberator bombing at 6000 feet
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

That's boring! It can be reduced down to read:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Kendari bombed by 206 B-17E Fortress and 85 B-24D Liberators at 6000 feet.

Allied aircraft
F-5A Lightning x 6
B-17E Fortress x 206, 12 damaged
B-24D Liberator x 85, 4 damaged

Japanese Ships
CL Nagara, Bomb hits 24, on fire, heavy damage
DD Michishio, Bomb hits 1
DD Murasame, Bomb hits 2, on fire, heavy damage

Japanese ground losses:
174 casualties reported
Guns lost 2

Port hits 21
Port supply hits 9

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Everything is still there and it might take a little longer to do but it increases the readability greatly. If the AAR is readable, no one will read it regardless of how dramatic the play. It doesn't matter to me if you can write like Shakespeare or a kindergartner, just make it factual and interesting.

Just my .02 cents.

Chez

My appreciation of how well other nations learn to use English and understand its nuances whilst we struggle to even use our own native tongue just grows and grows.

For those who have no idea what terminus and I are talking about just do a google on 'discworld'

No, didn't get that far, just to the first Key and the Pennekamp (sp?) reefs... wow.

I found Miami a bit scary with all those toll roads. Ok, maybe I'd better stop being OT now.
