Hi,
something that happened to me in a PBEM.
Lunga is mined but invaded by allies (well, happens sometimes). My surface Tf come from Shortland and try to harass those invasion forces which works out quite well. Unfortunately enough allies are ashore and Lunga is lost. Now the next night my surface forces show up and hit two of my own mines (I know due to '...hits Type93 Mine'). Now it's possible that this was two very unlucky hits into own defensive minefields but I think it's due to the fact that the base changed ownership and my defensive fields are now rated as offensive fields and I have a higher probability of hitting them.
Of course this is quite stupid handling of minefields by the game since the fields are just where they've been before - which means IJN knows where they are and Allies do not.
It might even be worse if the game would still rate them as defensive in nature now being on the allied side. Does anybody know more about the subject ?

Hello...

You know where your minefields area and the enemy does not. If you capture a base, then you gain the knowledge of where the enemy mines in the hex are located. The enemy still knows where his old mine fields are.

Hope this Helps...

Hi,
so it's just bad luck that I've hit two of my own mines ?

I don't know I had the same thing happen in my game when I sent a bombardment group up to Shortland in hopes of catching a CV that was in for repair. I had mined it about 3 turns earlier with about all my S boats. However when the S. Dakota arrived on station the first thing I got was a "...hits Mk10 Mine" times 2 during the run in. Now I have a BB with 60 for flooding and 65 for overall damage. So I don't believe it is completely bad luck nor is it a fault with the game. Rather it is the way that the game deals with minefields and begins the degration process. IE. you sort of know where you mines are but they will break morings and begin to drift into clear lanes.

Well Yankee but that were your own offensive minefields. Those Japanese minefields I've spoken about have all been defensive ones. And I sailed a great many times in and out of Lunga never hitting one of my own mines. Just after the base change into allied hands I hit two of them.

Yes, your minefields become the enemys. Of course you knew where they were and where the paths through them were when you owned them. But now that the enemey owns the waters around the fields, what is to prevent them from mapping the fields and then mining all of the passages that you have been using? That is-with minor changes, your minefield can be altered. This is not too far fetched. Makes sense to me.

Besides, once a mine, always a mine.
