Good work -- but how many Allied casualties did it cost in all?

Capt. Harlock.....

The losses on Guam and Tinian were fairly light.....probably around 15-20%. The amphibious assaults on atolls are much higher.... Kwajalein, Woleia, and Ulithi were all around 40-50% casualties. The killer was Palau...about 60% casualties and the units that participated in the assault were out of the war for 3-4 months.

Having said that, after completing over a dozen amphibious landings I realized that massive aerial bombardment by 500-1000 bombers was ineffective against CD guns and base units. After Woleia, Ive used the heavy bombers strictly against ground units and I use the bombardment TFs.....12-16 BBs and 20+ CAs with repeated bombardments to neutralize the CD guns. Case in point....although I suffered heavy casualties in taking Palau, the 8" and 5 " guns that start the game there were completely neutralized before my assault ships went in to shore. You suffer the massive casualties on atolls from the constant shock attacks.

In contrast, on islands such as Guam and Tinian, you wade ashore and its up to the defender to initiate combat. When I invaded Tinian, the Japanese launched a Banzai attack on the 2nd day and suffered 4000 casualties against less than 400 for the Allies so I think that really impaired the Japanese defense effort on that island.

WAR PLANS SWPAC..........SPRING 1944 INVASION OF MINDANAO

The long awaited campaign to recapture the Philippine Islands is about to begin. The 1st phase of the Philippine Island campaign will involve the recapture of Mindanao and adjacent islands. SWPAC forces have discovered an abandoned base on the SW tip of Mindanao......Dadjangas...and will attempt to occupy it in a coup de main. Thousands of Seabees and aviation personnel will land concurrently with the assault troops and a major air/naval base will be established there. SWPAC troops will then use the paved roads on Mindanao to overrun the various Japanese bases there. From developed airfields on Mindanao the Allies should be able to completely sever Japanese convoy routes from the SRA back to Japan.

Meanwhile, Admiral Mitscher's Fast Carrier TF 58 will sweep through the central Philippines to interdict Japanese shipping.

Unfortunately I never expected this. And I didn't have a plan for it. I couldn't stay in port as I hadn't the air power to cover them in port. So I scattered. But the Allies came deep inside my territory and basically sank everything in sight.

No more oil or resources for me. With the new bases he has taken in the SRA that area is now offlimits to traffic.

I did manage to get some supply in, but not a lot. I'll have to defend with what I've got.

One of my few remaining subs finds a nice target. Not a war winner, but the Curtis was there for some reason, and now it isn't.
AFter initially engaging on the surface my commander gets wise and does the job with torpedos.

Fortunately I saw that CV TF coming, they hopefully are chasing wakes by now. I'll burst my boilers, but my ships will survive

The RAF has already shut down oil production at Palembang and Batavia. With major airbases under construction at Singkawang, Dadjangas and Zamboanga, Allied bombers will be able to hit the oil production facilities at Soerabaja and Borneo. In addition, Japanese sea lines of communication from the SRA back to Japan are completely severed.

Engineer's won't reduce forts when they are disrupted. I've found that they will initially reduce forts, but after the first attack will rarely reduce forts.

Stand them down for at least 3 days.

But, I bet you don't have 3 days to just sit and wait.

More troops is what you need.

At this point on Saipan I am sitting absorbing punishment. He outnumbers me on the ground 5:1... I think I am being saved by the disruption the Allies took landing. Too bad I couldn't get some reasonable amounts of supply through. Tinian had the supply, Saipan has the staying power. Next time I'll be more careful about portioning that out. Nothing lives above ground except Allied soldiers at this point. And they must all have breathing problems for the dust raised by the constant streams of bombers and their cargo.
