So, what game was it that stole the most successive hours of your life when it was brand new and no other new release could tear you away from it because it was that good?

My choice would still have to goto "Civilization I & II". I can't even guess how many successive hours I spent playing CIV I when it first came out. But, it was certainly game after game and week after week as I played every nation at least once. When II came out I remember putting many hours into it as well, but, not near as many as the origional, I guess by that time I had burnt myself out on the game as a whole, but, it still qualifies as a long standing successive game of play over all new releases.

Silent Service 2, although the original Elite is probably a pretty close runner up.

For some reason Civ never really grabbed me, although I spent many hours playing Colonization which (for some reason) I found a lot more fun.

Doom, the original. I played and played that game. Then there was the original Sim city. Lots of wasted time

Damn...you just got me thinking back about all the hours, which must add up to YEARS I've wasted playing video and computer games!

Anyways.....

The game that probably killed the most neurons is either The Legend of Zelda on the venerable ol' NES...
(What a revolution that game was!)

OR, Herzog Zwei which was on the SEGA Genny 16-bit...

Talonsoft's CS series on computer have to be up there too...

I think Europa Universalis 2 stole the most time ever for me. Although I did play the original Wing Commander over and over and over again as well...

Koei's PTO2

Amen to that! I remember I had to stay out of school for a week with strep throat, so I played it non stop. Also played the first one to death.

He he, you too! Just made my fifth year at my umpteenth company and got that 3rd week of vacation. Blurred vision after the third day made me give a rest.

Still looking for something comparable, GG's WaW has been the closest, but still no diplomacy. WitP...to much micromanagement.

Have great hope for a mod using the SC2 engine, perhaps Matrix TOAW, and what was that vaporware that looked so promising, had a Coral Sea and Guadalcanal scenario for trailers?

It was a console only game, like WitP but with almost most no micromanaging (unless you wanted to do all the naval battles manually in turn based format). The original was for the Sega Genesis, while PTO2 Was for the Genesis, Super Nintendo, and Windows 95.

Hmmm
overall, would have to say, almost any game I got, that was anygood

but maybe would have to say BTR, I won it twice as the Allied player, and had a lots of mid range games that needed to be restarted (I helped with OOBs testing)(each OOB needs a restart to use)

Combat Mission opended a whole new world to this 25 year old at the time!

When I was younger? It was Tecmo bowl, Tecmo bowl, Tecmo bowl.
My brother and I would play out games keeping all the stats!

For me it was the Wizardry series (Knight of Diamonds, Revenge or Werdna, etc) back on the Apple II.

For modern games, I would say Civ or X-Com UFO Defense took up the most time when new.

Civ 1 perhaps. The idea was still so young back then that you just could not get enough of it.

Gads, Any Koei game does definitely take the cake for number of hours overall...but Phantasy Star Online was the largest number of logged hours I played a game immediately after release.

Other Time Suckers:

Adventure on the 2600
Nearly every Infocom text adventure
Ultima (1)
Bard's Tale
Might & Magic
Wizardry
Every Daisenryaku game

OH Holy crap, I almost forgot, Koei's Liberty or Death was a good one that stole many hours from me. Alway's liked throwing British Redcoats into the sea with my colonials.

Oh gawd I forgot Railroad Tycoon I, that one also stole many many many hours of play time when brand new. Man SID was on a roll back then wasn't he? RRT, Civilization and Pirates I guess stole the majority of my time for quite a long time.

But, OT just a sec, what the heck was he thinking when he did SIM GOLF?? LOL, it's a cute little game, but, it just doesn't feel like SID.

Hi!

Championship Manager 2 (Italian leagues) - soccer management game from SI... can't exactly say how much time it sucked... but I counted nights playing it... and btw, it got internal counter for the time spend in it, and I remember one game was nearly month long... gametime month.

Also Heroes of M&M 3, NBA series.

Alex.

Hey, that's true. I have also lost many days with Championship Manager series. The version I've played was 4. Almost as great waste of time has been Eastside Hockey Manager. I coached SKA St. Petersburg in that game.

I remember that.

But the C-64 game that ate up my time was Pirates, with Original Silent Service a close second.

Civ III springs to mind... though Axis & Allie beats it by a hundred thousand hours I think.
