I am a complete newbie here and with this game but so far I really like what I think I understand about it.

I have browsed through some of the forum here looking for a thread or area where a WitP scenario/database editor 'virgin' might be able to get some information.

I have read through some of the database/scenario editor manual and will admit that some of it makes sense and some of it isn't real clear to me.

Is this the correct place to ask beginner questions, maybe even some stupid questions?

Thanks gentlemen (and ladies if applicable).

I've been fiddling around with the db and scenario editors and have a couple of questions.

First a brief explanation of what I have done. It is really very simple but I figured if I could understand it at this level bigger is just more of the same conceptually albeit more complicated.

I defined a new task force.

I named the task force TF1 and put it in Location slot 3600. I located TF1 in a hex near a US base and assigned it an air ops mission.

I then assigned 1 CV (Zuikaku w/her 3 default air groups) to TF1. I also added another air group to the TF. This group showed in the Locations info screen for TF1 but the ac on the Zuikaku did not. I guess I expected that the ac on the carrier would be listed but that may be an erroneous conclusion on my part. I removed the extra air group from the TF by reassigning it to it's original base.

I then launched the game and loaded the scenario in Head-to-Head mode.

I selected the dive bomber air group and assigned it an Airfield Attack mission and designated the US airfield as the target. I assigned the fighter air group an Escort mission and they escorted the Judys. The airfield was attacked by the dive bombers as expected.

This is all good and pretty straightforward once I got my head around some of the subtlties of the db editor and the sequence of events that needs to be followed (I have also gained an appreciation for writing down the numbers associated with the items (ships/locations/air groups, etc., that are being used).

When I looked at the air group information while in the scenario I noticed that the three air groups were listed as "Independent" in the Assigned To: (at least I think that is what the field is named) field.

I clicked on "Independent" and assigned one of the air groups to "Southeastern Fleet", I think it was.

I then closed the scenario and opend the db editor and loaded the scenario. I expected to see something different in the information for the airgroup that I changed the assigment for while in the scenario. Nothing was different. All three airgroups had identical information as far as HQ related fields are concerned.

Now my questions.

Does the game keep a "working copy" of the scenario db somewhere that gets updated as the scenario progresses?

What is the purpose of the "Assigned to:" field for the airgroups?

I looked for a similar field for the carrier but there is none (at least I didn't see it if it's there).

And finally, when I defined the TF in the db editor I defined it with HQ Type 56 (air ops, range 6). Is that a correct thing to do?

I concluded that it would be since it seems logical that the carrier would direct air ops in it's vicinity but I have absolutely no confidence that I came to a correct conclusion.

Well, actually, I have one more question.

Is there a minimum map size that the game will allow?

For instance, if I wanted to build a small scale scenario that covers just the Solomon Islands from Rabaul to Guadalcanal will I be able to define the map boundries accordingly or is there some hard coded minimum map size?

Thanks for your help.

No. The database is accessed once, when the scenario is started. After that, it's the save games all the way.

This assigns the airgroup to a Command HQ, i.e. CentPac, Southern Area Army and suchlike. The purpose is that there are a few "restricted" HQ's, and land and air units assigned to them cannot be loaded on a ship and moved somewhere else without first paying Political Points to change their Command HQ.

There isn't one. Not needed.

TF's don't use the HQ type definition. It's there because TF's are lumped in with Locations, i.e. bases and land units, and they use them. You do have to define the mission, though.

No. You just set the top left and bottom right x,y coordinates.

----

One more thing, you don't assign air groups to TF's, but directly to carriers. In addition, the aircraft involved must be one of the small number of carrier-capable types.

Re ladies playing WITP, I would have to say I don't know if any do or not but I know of several ladies that play combat flight sim games and that is something that I wouldn't have guessed.

So, who knows, there may be some ladies that are interested in this game as well.

Thanks for the answers/explanations Terminus. I appreciate it.

Can you tell what the effect is if an airgroup's assigment is left as independent?

Thanks.

Carrier airgroups should be left as independent. (There is no negative effect - independent airgroups are unrestricted, btw.)

And they seem to gradually assume a Command HQ as the game progresses. Some kind of bug.
