Since the cat is gone, mice are in charge. Give us some action PzB or we'll OT your AAR so hard you'll think it's a General Discussion forum :)
Quotewise, it really cracked me. Gave me the biggest laugh of the whole series.

I just noticed and had to edit...Anarchy, we joined the boards on the same day. What does that make us, twins?

The turn we replayed turned out slightly different than the last one:

One of my subs that was hit by a B-24 got away without a scratch today,
otherwise the changes were negative. Well..when I think about it the Yamato
fixed 2-3 points of sys damage. That was also good.

I'm expecting pretty heavy bombing raids in the days to come, not sure how to
proceed yet but it's important to strike back whenever possible. Tomorrow A6M5 'Zekes'
start coming out of the factories at a rate of 300 ac pr month. Should help a bit!

A lot of steel rain from the air.. I'm mostly 'taking it' for now. Ken has drawn another deep
breath and I have to wait until he becomes winded again.

10 A6M5 Zekes in the pool after the first day of production. Good good...I will keep some A6M2s
for long range escort missions and upgrade the A6M3s last as they're pretty good as it is.

Situation Map: Preparing for another round at Gasmata

The map is a bit confusing but it shows the initial preparations for a second battle
of Gasmata called Operation Shogun

I'm not 100% convinced about this operation, but the enemy is still not established in
force at Gasmata and therefore vulnerable. As soon as this base is developed into a size 4
af the situation on New Britain will become even more untenable.

The enemy is still inferior in regards to surface combat units and I plan to destroy as many
of these as possible as this will make it much more difficult to advance further. I've not
seen anything to the US carriers, guess Ken doesn't want to risk them in confined waters within
my LBA range. Not to keen on risking mine either, but only by maximising our forces can another
victory be achieved.

In Kavieng 80 Tojos, 20 Tonys and 35 Nick fighter bombers have been put on 90% CAP. 2 surface combat
groups will move here and prepare to hit Gasmata tomorrow. The range is 6 hexes!

The bombardment group including 3 Kongo class battleships have to move 1 hex closer to Gasmata (5 hexes)
to be in range, this puts it in a dangerous position within range of torpedo bombers at Gasmata. The small
number of enemy bombers here (only a size 2 af) makes it an acceptable risk. LRCAP from Kavieng (and probably
some leakers from Kavieng) will protect it.

The carriers will stay 6 hexes away from Gasmata with fighters on 90% CAP.

Tomorrow a combined attack will go in: First 2 surface combat groups will move into Gasmata followed by the
bombardment group. I expect to take losses, especially from LBA bases on Torokina after the battle. The plan
is to close or disrupt the airfields as much as possible.

After the naval battles 140 Army bombers will hit Gasmata from the Admirality Islands and Kavieng escorted by
Oscar IIs and Zeros. The Tojos at Kavieng will attempt to sweep Gasmata to clear away the remaining CAP. Some
80 Bettys will then be ready on naval attack as the poweful carrier task forces move to within 3 hexes of Gasmata.
The surviving enemy shipping will then be destroyed.

Risky...but necessary!

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 07/03/43

Most of my A6M2/3 factories auto upgraded to A6M5 - maximum capacity is now some 450 :p)
I will run a full production run for 4-5 months to upgrade obsolete units ASAP and create a pool of some 1500 units.

Air Combat

My Kavieng CAP claimed several heavies today...

Day Air attack on Rabaul , at 61,88

Japanese aircraft
Ki-44-IIb Tojo x 10

Allied aircraft
F-5A Lightning x 4

Allied aircraft losses
F-5A Lightning: 1 destroyed

Japanese ground losses:
81 casualties reported

Airbase supply hits 2
Runway hits 51

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ken tried to intercept my convoy at Lautern - he was 1 day late and I sent some Zeros
to strafe him!

Day Air attack on TF at 35,82

A6M3 Zero x 19

No Japanese losses

Allied Ships

Only a few bombers attack my vulnerable battleships! They get away with it...

Day Air attack on TF at 60,87

Japanese aircraft
A6M2 Zero x 24
Ki-43-IIa Oscar x 12

Allied aircraft
F4U-1 Corsair x 3
Avenger I x 3

Japanese aircraft losses
A6M2 Zero: 4 destroyed

Allied aircraft losses

P-38G Lightning: 3 destroyed, 1 damaged

Japanese Ships
BB Kongo

Aircraft Attacking:
2 x Avenger I launching torpedoes at 200 feet
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
A larger strike goes after my agile cruiser squadron at Kavieng! The heavy CAP hits
the attackers hard and the first 2 Thunderbolt kills are registered. The Nicks are
surprisingly effective against the Lightings, guess they were fatigued. The Oi takes a
bomb hit that inflicts 30 sys damage and some fires - returning to Truk. One of the heavy
cruisers is hit by a dud torpedo and gets away with it.

The initial gamble has been a success! 35 Allied ac shot down for the loss of 23 Japanese
today.

Day Air attack on TF, near Kavieng at 61,86

Ground combat at Buin

Allied Bombardment attack

Attacking force 7953 troops, 84 guns, 0 vehicles

Defending force 4900 troops, 0 guns, 0 vehicles
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Situation Map: Going in!

The map shows the heavy CAP over Kavieng that shot up the Allied strike. The rested Tojo
pilots - ca 50 ac - will now sweep Gasmata. Some 77 Betty naval bombers and 30 Zeros are ready
in the various bases, but the main strike will be delivered by the navy.

TF41 - The surface combat group under R.Adm Nishimura will stage against Gasmata from Kavieng.
4 heavy cruisers
1 light cruiser
9 destroyers

TF38 - The bombardment group under V.Adm Yamamoto will attempt to bombard Gasmata.
Battleships: Kongo, Hiei and Kirishima
2 heavy cruisers
1 light cruiser
4 destroyers

The Carrier attacking force is divided into 2 powerful task forces and will move to a position just
3 hexes from Gasmata just north of Rabaul.

TF28 under V.Adm Yamaguichi: 340 ac
Carriers: Akagi, Shokaku, Zuikaku, Taiho and Unryu
1 heavy and 1 light cruiser
7 destroyers

TF30 under V.Adm Nagumo: 331 ac
Carriers: Junyo, Hiyo, Amagi, Katsuragi
Light carriers: Ryujo, Soho, Zuiho
1 heavy and 1 light cruiser
4 destroyers

The fighters are set to 60% CAP and range 4. All dive and torpedo bombers are set to 15/7k feet
and range 4. This will enable the force to provide a heavy fighter escort for its bombers, reach
out 1 hexe beyong Gasmata were several Allied task forces are likely to retreat, and provide CAP for
the retreating surface battle groups. Enemy ac based at Gasmata should be fatigued. Flying long range
missions in size 2 malaria infested base and heavy losses should ensure it.

We have to face some 20 PT boats before going into battle against a surface combat group. Then there
will only be transports to destroy and airfields to bombard!

It is hoped that this attack will seriously hurt Allied shipping and delay the build up of Gasmata and future
offensive operations. We've destroyed so many battleships and cruisers that it will be difficult for Ken to
both protect his carriers, provide escorts for convoys and organize powerful surface combat groups. It's
vital that we take advantage of this weakness. Killing of the enemy piecemeal using superior force is a central
premise of the 1943 naval combat doctrine.

Hopefully we will not loose too many ships and ac..the combined effort in clear weather should be efficient.

Then Yamamoto turns his attention to the already shaken battlegroup!
After only a few salvos the Oklahoma takes a direct hit by a 14" shell which penetrates
her hull and sparks of her magazine. A mighty plume of smoke and fire shoots into the

Two more Allied destroyers including a DMS are also sunk while the light cruiser Denver receives a beating.

Situation Map: The sinking of the USS Oklahoma

Our Kongo battleships proved to be extremely potent weapons in the hands of
vice Admiral Yamamoto! Even though a bombardment mission dozens of enemy ships were
destroyed in addition to a very successful bombardment attack. Enemy 8" shells bounced of
the Kongo's side armour at 4000 yards. It was evident that the Oklahoma couldn't match our
elite crews in a night fight.

In all our gamble paid off! The enemy has been struck another blow and our own losses were
relatively light. I'm so pleased that non of my irreplacable cruisers were sunk! 4 of them received
a heavy beating, but should all reach Truk safely:

Ashigara 24/16/5
Mikuma 25/12/12
Myoko 33/30/19
Nachi 45/23/18

A destroyer division has been assigned to escort them back to Truk from Rabaul.

In all only 3 Japanese destroyers were lost today - and here is what the enemy had to pay:

Battleships Oklahoma
Heavy cruiser San Francisco
Light cruisers Denver and Colombia
5 destroyers
1 destroyer minesweeper

1 minesweeper
2 sub chasers
4 LCUs
5 PT boats
3 troop transport
7 cargo ships sunk/sinking

In addition a light cruiser was hit by a torpedo.

The cost in the air was higher, but expected:
97 Japanese ac were shot down in air to air combat (including 50 A6M2 Zeros).
42 Allied ac were shot down including 16 P-47s, 12 P-38 and 1 Corsair.

In all 108 Japanese and 67 Allied ac were destroyed today.

It's time to head back to base and regroup. I got a job to do regarding the carrier air groups. One 27 ac
A6M2 group was upgraded to the A6M5 today. My cruisers have taken a beating and need some time before
they again are able to sortie in strength - but they will. That's the most important thing

It's really a secret Al, but I guess you deserve to know...

It was a good operation but as always there is an element of luck in it (this is NOT to belittle PZB's planning and tactics) but the number of magazine hits you have got in this game supercedes ALL of mine in the games i've played.

Nomad didn't throw a hissy fit when his Corsairs morphed into F-16s..

The reality was that Corsairs were the F-16s of their day, and wiped the Japanese air force in the Southern Pacific accordingly.

There are serious problems with the fundamental design of the Game. Most of us long-term players are still struggling to find work-arounds for those problems.

Few of us bought this game expecting it to be "Fantasy Warfare in the Pacific". If it were advertised as such, fewer of us would have bought it.

Mike Wood and the rest of the Matrix/2x3 folks don't want to spend the time and money on making WitP a simulation. They don't see any economic advantage in doing so.

But it does have a negative effect on their businesses. For example, I still haven't bought another game from either Company since I became disillusioned with the design decisions in WitP. I bet that I'm not the only one.

So enjoy your laugh, but ask yourself as you play the Japanese side - is it really fun to play a "historical" wargame in which the design has been made in a way to give your side unhistorical advantages? Isn't it a bit like "cheating at solitaire"?

Cheers -

Dave Baranyi

Thanx guys
It certainly felt good to go to bed tonight, only got 2-3 hours sleep but I still grinned when I got up!
This game got some strange side effects.

Nomad didn't say anything in his reply...from Hoepner and Alikchi's posts I assume he was more literate in his AAR!?
That's the real problem, isn't it - if you have a really good day on the job it's almost 100% certain that some other poor sod
has an equally bad one!

Luck is an integral part of a victory, can't have one without it..and I'm the first to admit that I got my fair share of it and then some.
Still, the magazine explotions were not crucial in this battle - both the cl and the bb would have been blown out of the water by superior fire
power. Having ships with night fighting skills that averages 80 was perhaps the decisive factor. My biggest worry was the PT boats and they just didn't perform.

John -

Nomad left a post saying, "This AAR is Now Closed".

He couldn't understand how your TFs could travel in, attack so many times, and then travel out of range of his bombers again.

I'm not surprised that his ships didn't perform well. In particular, since the game started so early on he is burdened with a number of inherent problems such as the 20-knot BBs not being able to receive radar upgrades.

You pulled off a very good victory, but there are still a number of items in the "mechanics" of it that suggest that we still don't really understand all the nuances of the game.

Take care -

Dave

Closed? Hope he didn't get to discouraged by this little setback...better send him an note!

Fantasy warfare in the Pacific - have I missed something? Personally I'm pretty tired of discussing and criticising game mechanics.
Don't we all know how a stock V1.6 works by now? We all knew how this game handled surface combat before Operation Shogun and
this aspect has worked fairly well until now, hasn't it?

I staged my bombardment group 5 hexes away from Gasmata and at flank speed it was able to move in and out again.
The surface combat group had a bigger speed and staged 6 hexes away. The 4 ca's that were shot up only managed to
cover 3 hexes on the return leg, but this was sufficient.

The operation was a big risk as all my damaged ships could have been sunk by enemy LBA. I know that enemy Corsairs and T-bolts
would slaughter my crack KB pilots. 60 of them died against only 7 P-47s and 1 Corsair Yes, I find this frustrating and not very
realistic, but I've accepted it and is trying to adapt accordingly. Surface combat is one of the few areas in which Japan still excells
in this game.

I've played 3 scen 15 from the Allied side (1 still in progress) and never felt that the Japs were invincible. Feel that I've
been able to hit back pretty good actually.

"Fantasy Warfare..." was another of Nomad's quotes.

Don't forget, you aren't playing a stock v1.6 game, but an old game that has had repeated upgrades. And not all the upgrades worked on the original OOB. So there are things with the Allied ships that will never get fixed in your game.

Ah, you edited your first response...

Anyway, as far as my suggestions for improvements that would allow a more realistic game and still give a Japanese player a solid chance to win, look at the current "B-29" thread in the main section.

Cheers -

Yea i didn't want it to sound so harsh. :) But even when getting my ass stomped in Fortress America i still enjoyed the fun of the fight until i knew i was beat and then i gave up. But as America sure you'll get your butt stomped and the score will be bad but come 1945 regardless of what you went through before you will feel the thrill of conquoring.

But like i said i'd be willing to keep playing as an allied player and would congratulate you on every victory and afterwards would like to talk strategy about hows and whys. :)

Thats the best part doing the AAR between the players and comparing notes its very exciting.

The BBs and CAs were both attacked the previous day, so he knew they were there. You had hit him with these forces only a few days before and knew what you had in the area.

Things could have gone better for the allies if he had damaged some more ships in the surface action. Although there was a lucky hit involved the results are not out of the ordinary given the forces involved. To oppose you with such a small force was a big gamble and it came up snake eyes.

To moan about the game mechanics after this battle comes off sounding like sour grapes.
