After having this game for a few days, I have a few questions that I can't find an answer to:

1. In quick battle, does it matter where on the vertical axis the units are placed, or if they are placed behind another unit in the horizontal axis? I read in the rules that units engage the unit opposite them, and tried to play around with this, but everything appears so chaotic once it starts, with units moving around the grid. Is it supposed to visually represent a 2D battlefield? For example, should my high-morale infantry be in the center?

2. The Americans just declared war on me for blockading a port in my test game. How do the Americans function?

Those are the two big ones at the moment. I'm sure there are at least a couple of others that I forgot - should remember to write them down.

Reading the rule book on quick battles gives a detailed explanation on this topic. It states that units try to engage units across from them. If there is no unit across from them then the unit will move toward the center of the "board" trying to find a unit to engage. How it moves toward the center is random.

I don't think there is any advantage to having high morale units in the center. I don't think flanks are recognized. I would recommend putting weak strength or low morale units in the defend area as they will be less likely to rout from there.

As for the Americans, other than their navy and trade, they are abstracted. Don't expect any marines to land on your doorstep. As I've never been at war with them I'm not sure how you get a surrender out of them or if even you can. A cease fire might be your best bet.

The Americans will cease hostilities once we have destroyed a significant portion of their vessels. They will reenter the fray, with new arrivals of fleets, in so far as we are on a blockading craze.
