Ok, this is an AAR between myself and String. We will each run our own threads and they will be off limits to each other. Please if you comment don't betray information we would not have.

I've played about 2 hours worth of the game in total, so expect some 'interesting' errors. I also am allergic to reading manuals so this will probably be an object lesson in how to make a total mess of things. However my preferrred learning style is learning by mistakes so here goes.

The settings are:

Scenario Pacific Jutland

Settings: ON - Sub doctrines, FOW, Adv weather, Player def Upg, all Game Options,

Reinforcements fixed, 1 Day turn cycle,

Non historical start..

Roger

Initial Japanese Plans and philosophy

At the start the Japanese hold most of the bases with large points scores and these need to be held. However in holding them alone the points difference is in the Allies favour at 913/1161. It seems to me that we need to redress this by taking some bases, whilst not losing any, but in itself, even if we were to take every base there is not a lot of points to be gained. On the other hand the prestige of running the tired old imperialists out of Asia would be massive. Points are really there for the taking in sinking and damaging the enemy fleets. An example of this would be the sinking of 3 Allied BBs would be more than the equivalent of taking Hong Kong.

Our intelligence suggests that their combined fleets are weaker than ours, and that at present they are dispersed. If they are to succeed in their war they will be likely to seek to concentrate at one point and try to force a decisive battle on a part of our fleet, then follow up with invasion of one or more of our bases.

To counter this we have studied the map carefully and note that the area can almost be considered a closed sea in which we will clash, bounded by land masses. We will therefore seek to establish forward scouting forces to warn of their intentions and to concentrate our own dreadnoughts centrally so that we can put them with massive force wherever is appropriate. The only problem with this is my support personnel at Naval HQ have not yet had the time to predict how long we can stay at sea and there is not a central base where we can sit and await their approach.

We do feel that a detour by some forces to Hong Kong from Formosa is worthwhile, we know that the enemy has a small but powerful fleet presence there and if he does not withdraw these we can overwhelm him prior to joining up with our main fleet in the central South China Sea.

So, the details of Operation ‘Bow’

TF6 from Pescadores to sail to Hong Kong. 6 BBs, 5 CAs, 9 DDs under the command of VADM Yamamoto. Objective to destroy the Allied warships there then rv with main forces in South China Sea.
TF7 from Pescadores to 4 CLs, 4 DDs under RADM Aihara sail to west of Hong Kong and intercept any shipping heading for port .
TF8 from Pescadores 7 DDs and 2 MSWs to sail to SW of Hong Kong then to split into smaller picket Tfs to form advance guard warning of allied approaches.
Tainan forces to remain at anchor as mobile reserve scouting forces as situation develops
TF9 from Takao 2 BBs 4 BCs 1 CA 7 DDs under CPT Shibuya to sail to RV at 41.47 with main fleet.
Taichu shipping to await developments
TF4 under 5 BBs 3 DDs under Cpt Sakai to sail from outside of Lingayen to 41.47
TF2 25 Subs to sail in direction of 38.50 once out at sea to split into smaller Tfs and form advanced picket line
TF1 4 BBs 3 DDs under CPT Matsubara from Lingayen to sail to 41.47 to RV with main fleet
TF3 7 CLs 3 DDs under CPT Obayashi to sail to 37.50 to watch allied possible approach to TayTay
TF10 UB Class Subs from Manila under CDR Handa to sail to west of TayTay to intercept shipping attacking from West.
TF11 10 Subs under LCDR Kashiwagi from Manila to sail to 2 hexes west of Manila
TF12 10 Subs from Manila under LCDR Kinashi to sail to 39.50 and then to split into smaller hunting packs
TF13 1 CV 1 CA 3 CL under RADM Tomusaki to sail from Manila to 41.49 to act as scout for any hostile forces in that vicinity.
TF14 at San Jose 4 DDs under CDR Minowa to be on reaction standby here of 6 hexes
TF15 at TayTay 2 CA, 4 CL 5 DD under CPT Koizumi to be on standby here of 6 hexes
TF 5 at TayTay 3 CA 3 DD under CPT Kasai to be on standby here of 6 hexes
TF 16 at TayTay 2 CL, 9 DD under RADM Tanaka to sail to 31, 53 to make a nuisance of themselves!
Mitsubish Torpedo bombers to move from Clark to Lingayen – pity they don’t have the range to make TayTay!
TF17 2ML to sail from Lingayen to mine approaches to Manila

Ok, as you will see almost everything done is moving the fleet about. Land and support shipping can wait a move or two until I see what is developing… I hope.

Move completed, sent off.

Roger

Day 1

Straight away a sub catches one of my CLs. The Hirado gets 29 float and 21 fire damage from one torpedo off Hong Kong. Its detached from TF7 and making its way back to Pescadores. My escorts couldn’t locate the sub (SSK-14) so it gets away.

TF2 splits now its at sea and individual subs spread away from the point to all areas. Hopefully we’ll catch a few of his ships this way.

TF12 continues as a group and we will watch how the dispersal of TF2 goes before doing the same with the other sub wolfpack
TF43 sub is formed from half of TF11 and thus the spread continues outwards. They will patrol the Sulu Sea and guard the southern flank of Manila approaches

TF7 moving south of Hainan to watch reinfrocemnts coming towards Hong Kong.

Overall not a lot to do. The lack of scouting planes means there are vast areas of sea where he could be and I have no idea yet…. Hopefully the same applies to him.

Move 2 - a bad day for the Imperial navy

SSk3 hits CL Abukama with a torpedo north of Brunei.

Night engagement rages between fleets at Hong Kong. Ranges vary between 2000 and 10000 yards. British ships are more heavily armoured it would seem, indeed some of the Jap Bbs are hardly Bbs really! Overall a complete disaster for the Japanese who, on paper had a stronger fleet in terms of numbers, in terms of Bbs…. But who were resoundingly defeated by more heavily armoured ships which were also far more accurate in their fire controls.

On the plus side, if there is one, BBs Ajax, Centurion and Conqueror all took significant shell hits and all had torpedo strikes.

What was significant was that the other BBs they had in their TF were not damaged at all, whereas all my ships had some hits on them.

All in all, as I said, a mess!

Ok, what to do.

The defeated fleet that sailed so proudly out to destroy the forces at Hong Kong are now split into three Tfs heading back to base at the Pescadores. BB Suwo and CA Ibuki are massively damaged and will not make it I think with float damage of 83 and 93 respectively. BBs Mikasa, Hizen, Iwami and Okinoshima will get back but will need significant repairs that will remove them from this scenario I’d say.

The result of this is we are determined to finish the job before they can be reinforced. TFs 1, 4 &9 will rv near Hong Kong and reorganise, then they will head in and destroy the remaining British fleet there. We have found them, now we will pin and destroy them. This force has 11 Bbs and 4 BCs to combine into a mighty force to assault the four undamaged Bbs at Hong Kong. We feel we can achieve this before the other British and Dutch ships appear.

TF 16 (raider Tf) will head towards Saigon in the belief that his capital ships have left and there may be easy pickings in merchant ships there.

Otherwise the subs continue to disperse to find his main fleet.

I do hope I am reading this right, otherwise it may be a very short game!

It sounds to me like you used your pre-dreadnaughts (Mikasa, Hizen, Iwami, and Okinoshima are all pre-dreads) against his normal BBs and got a whomping.

I think all the BBs that start at Pescadores in this scenario are pre-dreadnaughts.

It looks like you have a good counter plan to me though! (Nice map btw) He has to keep BBs at Hong Kong to protect the place. Which means that they won't be hard to find and sink

Edit: Looking at the AAR, yep, dreadnaughts versus pre-dreadnaughts.. You actually did pretty well More than I'd expect out of them anyways!

Providing of course, that you can mass sufficient numbers of modern Japanese battleships against the RN. Like you said, the Japanese pre-dreadnoughts aren't worth much ship-to-ship.

Day 3

Bbs Renown, Repulse and Hood chase damaged Bb and Ca from Hong Kong and finish them off. Otherwise no action at all.

TF7, west of Hong Kong moving towards Camranh Bay, mix of CA. CL and DD hoping to get in behind his fleet which we assume is out there somewhere.

TF1 10 BBs and 4 BCs plus DD support now combined and 2 hexes south of Hong Kong heading there…. Fireworks next move I’m sure.

TF9 DDs and MSW also heading there acing as screening force.

TF6, reformed and resupplied at Pescadores now moves to join the fight at Hong Kong.

Damaged ships from first Hong Kong battle will have to languish at Pescadores, there is no shipyard to repair them in this scenario!

Time to hang onto your seat folks!

If you have any Japanese submarines undeployed, especially the very short-range ones, you might consider setting up some harbor defense submarine patrols, around Manila and possibly Taytay. I had the British AI come in and whack me with shore bombardment at Taytay, but a small Japanese sub put a couple of torpedoes into Glorious as a payback.

Also consider defensive minefields.

The humble Shimose 5 mine can do an amazing amount of damage to British battlecruisers. At one point, the Hood had over 50 system damage from one mine strike.

Warning – extreme scenes of violence contained – and sounds of a grown man crying! Not for the faint hearted.

As predicted, the fleets engage at Hong Kong. And its not as expected. 14 BBs and BCs of mine tangle with 5 of his BBs. I keep getting belt armour hits that bounce off, he keeps penetrating. After two rounds the engagement ends.

Tanaka goes down with his ships

If I was a bit sad before what am I now???????????

Ok, next moves in my ‘masterplan’.

TF3 moves to guard Manila, 7CLs & 3 DDs
TF13 Air Combat will move to investigate sightings of Allied ships west

Hong Kong outcome, one BB is crippled – Nagato 86/32/37 and two others are battling fires and sys damage over 30 Mutsu and Aki. The others are actually hardly touched so remain for another day of pounding, except they will be joined by another 5 BB TF. I’m going to stay here and finish this – to run now would be to lose face and also to have thrown some good ships away. I know a major part of his fleet is still in Saigon (pause to recall the total destruction of Tanaka’s command – note don’t do that again!) so I still can overwhelm him at Hong Kong – we shall see.

Quite why we did so badly again I don’t know, ok not many ships had damage, but his BBs seem to be able to shrug off damage still.

I have to say I love the new Sub routines….. sub is rattled…… sub leaking water on starboard!

Despite the dreadful move and the massive loss of ships I’m having fun….. but nothing like the fun String will be having when he wakes up and runs this turn!

Most entertaining, and you've got to admire the ability to maintain a sense of humour in the face of all that! How about a damage screen showing those battered BBs?

Steve.

Yes, but you only need to engage his BC - Hood, Renow, Repulse - and get a critical, and that points gap is closed.
Courageous and Glorious have only bacofoil armour

Remember, Despair is a sin!

Besides, this is too good an AAR.....

Oh yeah, the Glorious and Courageous (two of Fisher's Follies) are, to use a technical term, crap.

Just from interest I counted up how many hits each side got this turn on the other’s ships…..

Japan – 33 plus 1 torp
Allied – 52 plus 1 torp

Okay how would you handle the situation… this is my response

TF57 formed at TayTay under Yamata. 4xCA 4xCL 8xDD. Looks like a force approaching from North West.

TF1 is retiring to rearm and refuel, at least it hasn’t been badly damaged.

I am relying on my subs now to spot and damage him as he inevitably senses a major strategic victory.

DD Tfs are readied at all Formosan ports to resist what is likely to be raids by his ships.

A shame TayTay doesn’t have an airfield yet, I could deploy my torpedo bombers there and cause his advancing fleet some problems.

All in all its about how confident String is now, he knows that my ships have been badly damaged – he probably has a pretty low opinion of my ability (he’s not the only one) but he just may be wary as he’s seen how the combats can be quite unpredicatable.

So, a waiting game?

Ps I got really annoyed with all the html stuff to colour the text - so I thought if I did it in Word and copied it across it might keep its formatting - it didn't. Anyone know a way of doing this other than coding each line.... snore. I hate straight text combat reports copied... but life's too short to code everything.

As usual a map for those like me who prefer visuals.

Roger

Roger,

My sympathies on those sunk ships. Keep up the fight though, you never know when the dice will break your way!

That will always be my hope.... even if its the last sub afloat!

Its very interesting, if very frustrating. I have learned many things this way - reading manuals the words just go in one eye and out again.

I think I rushed in too quickly, I should have assembled my fleet more carefully and put the best possible commander in charge.

I also see that CLs, unlike in WITP cannot just charge around and cause mayhem.

Subs can be lethal!

Do not say that, Sting and us know perfectly that we have absolutely no control over how things are going in any naval battles... We can't reproach you with having crappy ships or captains, can we? ;)

But it worries me a little about the Kaigun efficiency in this game... Is the japanese player starting the Jutland scenario with little experience for his ships? Shouldn't it be raised a little and be over the british ships' one because of the prior invasion of Philippines and the probable fights that occured with the US Navy?

btw I was surprised by your last screenshot. I needed a second to realize that the colour of the flag at Cam Ranh Bay was because of your colored layer - thought it had been invaded by Belgium. :D
