In version 1.795, allied historical pilots seem to be drawn from the pilot pool without regard to availability date. This means that the allied player will get entirely historical pilots for most of 1942, most with higher experience than randomly generated pilots, leading to allied air units with very high experience early in the game. That seems ahistorical and could unbalance the game.

I should add that this may be happening with Japanese pilots, as well, but there's only about 400 of them, so they might all be distributed on day one.

Actually, it is quite credible and correct to do this. 2 things:

1. As much as everyone goes on about the level of Japanese experience, the vast majority of fliers in all the services were long term men; they knew their planes and what to do with them.
2. During the prewar years, with the budgets being low, the requirements for pilots were low, as there were only so many slots to fill (not many) and a lot of applicants. This allowed the air services to be very picky on who they chose to enter pilot training.

So, while not the infamous 8-900 hours of flying hours and "I flew in China for some time and shot down some fools in surplus Soviet planes" of the IJN/AF, the Allied pilots (mainly on the American side) were not all newbies out of flight school either.

..Oh! We fly o'er the treetops with inches to spare,
There's smoke in the cockpit and gray in my hair.
The tracers look fine as a strafin' we go.
But, brother, we're TOO God damn low...
