Okay here's the deal.

Scenario 1 1922-26
Japs - Terminus (WPO Beta Tester)
Allies - Bill Durrant

Sub Doctrines on for both
No automatic first turn.

I really don't have a clue what I've let myself in for so I have sent subs out hoping for some sort of recon and maybe a lucky hit?

Surface Combat TFs are formed and standing by for action.

My first shock is that I find a number of ships in the USA with 10 damage. Not sure if this reflects a recent upgrade or not.

HMS Vendetta - my personal command is, of course, wrapped in as much cotton wool as can be found in Hong Kong.

Watch this space

Ok Bill, you have one avid reader.... is this a one sided AAR or will both sides be posting?

Roger

Apologies again for damaging the paintwork on the Vendetta in my game.

The thread is open to both sides, so don't expect too many deep secrets to be revealed.

As for pre-damaged ships, yes those are recent upgrades. The US destroyers have all received depth charges, for instance. Some of the more heavily damaged US ships represent vessels which had been laid up for a considerable time before the war began, and are not fit for action.

An interesting effect in the beginning of the long campaigns (scenarios 1 or 2) is that the Japanese don't have the first turn speed bonus that they do in WitP. You won't see Japanese landings in ten different places on the first turn.

Japanese Ships
DD Yanagi

BTW - anyone give me advice on putting screenies in. I have adobe photoshop and that is about it and my graphics knowledge is cr*p so the advice needs to be basic. Thanks.

I recommend getting a dedicated screenshot program. I use Screen Shot Assistant, found here:

The first Imperialist American outpost falls to His Imperial Majesty's Glorious Troops!

Some people might say it's not much of victory, taking an empty base. I say "pish tosh" to that, not because it means anything, but just because it's fun to say.

If you really want a little bit of guidance drop me a line, you could produce some great screen shots from Photoshop.

Which version do you have?

Cheers

Just downloaded it, it looks to me like a good screen capture and cataloguing program, but it has no annotation features? Is this right. If so Bill could still use it and Photoshop for the annotation.... but if it has annotation on it then he may as well just use it.

Looked at the helpfile and it seems only to do what I say above.

Its obvuiously very tech minded as the download site is not very user friendly!

I wasn't sure if Photoshop has a screenshot feature since I don't own it myself, hence the recommendation. Screen Shot Assistent takes some pretty good quality snaps, and the price really can't be beat.

Screen shot assistant looks to be very good for grabbing a series of screenies an hanging onto them. Photoshop is the best (IMHO) digital imaging package around.. it won't take screenshots... but once you have them you can make them into works of art.

I don't use it for my screenies as I know once I open Photoshop up I'd forever be tweaking the map and the AAR would never get done!

Roger

(most of the stuff in my WITP AAR is photoshop)

I use Screen Shot Assistent for taking the shots (the many shots in a row functionality is priceless), and then an image editor called The GIMP to tinker with them. That one's free, too.

Just had a quick look at The Gimp..... its basically originated in Linux and been 'windowised'. Looks like it would do the job, but it also looks like it needs a user who has some savvy re IT.... its free which is a huge bonus.

Any graphics programme will do most of what we'd want... some cost laods, some are free. At the end of the day if it does what you want and its free, or it fdoes what you want and its on your hard disc... use it!

I wouldn't advocate buying any Photoshop version just to do screenies, but if, like me you have it anyway.... its effectively a free programme if you follow my logic.

Roger

If people want help with Photoshop then I can always knock up a simple how to sheet for them... that and being publicly slaughtered in game sis the service I offer!

The Empire's campaign to drive the American menace out of our rightful sphere of influence has seen its first naval action. A combined Franco-American cruiser/destroyer group attacked our landing force at San Marcellino. In a confused night battle, the two sides exchanged numerous salvoes of gunfire and torpedoes before the engagement ended inconclusively. Several ships were damaged on both sides, and the US destroyer Dorsey became the first ship sunk of the war:

Last night Heavy Cruisers from Manila made a rendezvous with heavy cruisers of our gallant French allies from Saigon. The brave TF attempted to intercept troop ships invading San Marcelino. Unfortunately, the native population of the Phillipines omitted to mention the presence of Japanese Battleships

Indications are that an invasion of Davao is imminent

The war continues to go well. All of northern Luzon is now in our hands, and our second-wave troops have begun landing on Mindanao today.

At sea, Japanese arms demonstrated their technological superiority today, when a small flotilla of Philippino puppet government gunboats tried to break our blockade of Manilla Bay. Needless to say, our powerful armoured cruisers kept the enemy ships at bay, never allowing them within range of their own puny weapons. The end result: 3 enemy gunboats sunk, and two heavily damaged.

Later in the day, the Imperial Navy's submarine service achieved its first success of the war, when one of our boats put a torpedo into the armoured hide of the French cruiser Waldeck-Rousseau. With the ship already damaged from action yesterday, we can only hope to have caused her debilitating injury today.

Actually, I was planning to do one of the map at the end of the first week of combat (three turns from now), but if you want one, I'll post one after the next turn. Unless my esteemed opponent beats me to it...

We can't really go the one-thread way, and show our respective strategies with many a coloured arrow on a map...

Hey Terminus, can you discuss you stragegic plans a bit, even if rather vaguely (you know, lots of smoke and hand waving)? Also, did you change the initial default plans for the Japanese?

Thanks.

Well, I did change a few things, to achieve greater local superiority in fewer landing areas. So a couple of landing TF's were redirected.

As for my strategic plan, it's to remove the American influence from my backyard, and hold off his naval counterstroke as far away from the Philippines as possible. There, vague enough?

Thanks. I can't seem to get the strategic plan figured out in this game. In WitP it's easy. You need oil and resources. That's not so here. Basically, you want to beat the tar out of the Allies.

Exactly. Japan hasn't run out of resources yet.

Look at it this way: Japan's imperial ambition was awakened by the Russo-Japanese war and strengthened by WWI (which gained her the German Mandates in the Pacific). If I was the Japanese government and military in this alternate history, I'd not be too happy to have such a strong presence of an unfriendly nation's forces in my backyard, blocking my plans for expansion.

Oh, and to everyone else reading this AAR, including my worthy opponent: while this is a PBEM game, and I play to win the war, if there's anything at all about the game you want to discuss (preferably marginally connected to the action), then do so. WPO is very new, and not considering Tanker and us betas, it's uncharted waters. ASK, people!
