Okay, how about a vote for Matrix Game of the Year. Points for 1st(3) 2nd(2) 3rd(1). Can be a game previously released or this year. I'll add them up as we go along and announce the results bewteen Xmas and New Year (maybe even have a best newcomer award)

I'll start

1st WitP

Oleg Mastruko -> RE: Matrix Game of the Year (12/11/2005 7:05:54 PM)

Honestly, we can't play like that guys. WITP is not this year's release, so no matter how we all may love it (it's perhaps my favorite game of all times), it's out of this year's competition, period.

So my votes would be:

- GG WAW (released March IIRC)
- FPG (released February IIRC)
- CoG (released sometime during the summer)

If COTA official release sees the light of day during this year, I'd put COTA sharing the no 1 spot with GG WAW. Both COTA and WAW are very inventive designs in their respective fields, and it's hard to decide which is really better.

CoG is really much much bigger and more ambitious than FPG but is buggier and does not work as well as FPG for what it tries to portray. So, ambitions-wise and design-wise, I'd put CoG before FPG, but implementation-wise, and playability-wise I'd put FPG way before CoG.

O.

Shannon V. OKeets -> RE: Matrix Game of the Year (12/11/2005 10:25:55 PM)

I don't know enough about these games to vote. And I have no axe to grind here. So perhaps I can help resolve the issue of what games can be considered when voting.

The original proposal for the thread explicitly stated that older games should be considered. That is in conflict with common voting schemes for Most Valuable Player, Oscars, Emmys, and many other "best of the year" polls. However, there is nothing particularly sacred about how these polls are done. Since Bill Durrant started the thread, I believe he gets to set the rules on the voting.

If this causes you grief because it "doesn't seem right", then maybe a different view on what is being voted on would help.

As Bill defines it, the "Matrix Game of the Year" is the best Matrix game you have played this year. That is a pretty clear definition. When all the voting is done, it will be easy for Bill to calculate which of the games that were released this year scored highest - to meet the second definition that Oleg prefers.

I hope this helps.

Oleg Mastruko -> RE: Matrix Game of the Year (12/11/2005 10:31:16 PM)

LOL, no matter which rules you use, I stick to my vote. I played WITP more than any other game this year but still think it would be largerly unfair to other "true 2005" games to nominate WITP (ie vote for it).

O.

Bill Durrant -> RE: Matrix Game of the Year (12/11/2005 10:33:12 PM)

Not that I'm bothered as it is only a bit of fun but MVP is the most valuable player this year - he could have been playing in the league for years but was best this year. But heck - who cares.

Best Newcomer will definitely get a category but if most people still like WitP, for instance, over the new games then that ought to get recognised as well? However, most people who like WitP don't have time for new games[:)]

Oh to be a pollster[;)]

Ok - I'll play along

1st : COTA - I've been playing it all year, so this one counts by your rules :) (I'm a beta-tester)
2nd : Crown of Glory - sure, it has some problems, but it's the best Nappy game *ever*
3rd : World at War - beer & pretzels - abby beer and pretzels from Harrod's that is.

Greetz,

Eddy Sterckx

Reiryc -> RE: Matrix Game of the Year (12/12/2005 1:45:46 AM)

1st cog
2nd ggw@w
3rd gates of troy (was that released this year? I can't remember)

If we go with best all time from matrix my top 5 rankings are:

1st witp
2nd cog
3rd uv
4th httr
5th ggw@w

general billy -> RE: Matrix Game of the Year (12/12/2005 1:53:33 AM)

Perhaps.. what we need now, is a poll of the worst Matrix game of the year [:D]

[RS]Wedge -> RE: Matrix Game of the Year (12/12/2005 2:22:35 AM)

I picked up UV back in '03 and havent played it since. I picked up GGWaW a couple of weeks ago and have been playing it non stop. I have that stategy war gaming bug again and now Im trying to sit down and figure out how to play UV once again. I figured if I can get the hang of UV I will go ahead and buy WitP.

As of right now I cant get enough of GGWaW so that is my #1.

Hertston -> RE: Matrix Game of the Year (12/12/2005 5:26:46 PM)

Can't really see the point of the poll unless you have played all of them - HAS anybody played all of them? [;)]

I've really enjoyed Crown of Glory and Tin Soldiers:Caesar (I also bought BiN, GGWaW, Supremacy and Gates of Troy this year).

wodin -> RE: Matrix Game of the Year (12/12/2005 6:22:12 PM)

1st. Combat Leader
2nd Combined Arms.
3rd World in Flames.........................zzzzzzzzzzzzzz......................zzzzzzzzzz......

There's no such thing, but, if you'd like to do a poll of Paradox's worst game of the year! [:D][:D][:D]

Bill Durrant -> RE: Matrix Game of the Year (12/14/2005 12:26:32 AM)

Running Total

War in the Pacific (June 2004) 17
War Plan Orange (Nov 2005) 11
Crown of Glory (June 2005) 11
GGWAW (March 2005) 9
COTA (soon[&o]) Beta vote 3
BiN (Sept 2004) 3
Star Chamber (Dec 2005) 2
Flashpoint Germany (Jan 2005) 2
HTTR, SPWAW Generals, Lock n Load, Gates of troy all on 1.

More votes anyone?

jvgfanatic -> RE: Matrix Game of the Year (12/14/2005 12:36:07 AM)

1. Spartan - though you can mark it as GOT so it gets 2 votes. I bought both at the same time and they are one and the same for me.
2. COG
3. GGWAW

Rainbow7 -> RE: Matrix Game of the Year (12/14/2005 12:41:13 AM)

If 'best' equates with 'most played', then:

1. Titans of Steel
2. Korsun Pocket
3. War in the Pacific

ravinhood -> RE: Matrix Game of the Year (12/14/2005 1:38:04 AM)

SPARTAN/GATES of Troy (2) votes. ;)

2) Tin Soldiers: Caesar

3) hasn't been released yet. ;)

jvgfanatic -> RE: Matrix Game of the Year (12/14/2005 2:42:28 AM)

I'd love to try Tin Soldiers but alas, my holiday budget is so far gone that I heard astronomers saw it somewhere around Jupiter.

ravinhood -> RE: Matrix Game of the Year (12/16/2005 6:03:51 PM)

Tin Soldiers is just the ultimate "different" experience in wargaming. It's like playing with minatures. And when/if they ever really build a huge campaign game out of this engine it will be one of the best to play. Oh and also a "random map generator/random army generator. ;)

Wayllander -> RE: Matrix Game of the Year (12/16/2005 7:01:12 PM)

1.GGW@W

Are you counting 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place votes as each being worth one vote? Or using some weighting scheme?

As my previous comments weren't counted as "votes", here's the formal one for 2005, then.

1. Crown of Glory
2. Tin Soldiers: Caesar
3. FPG (which I forgot last time).

I'm pretty depressed by the showing so far for TS, actually. I guess the poll shows mostly just which sold best; TS:C is a MUCH (if totally different) better game than GGWaW (in my very humble opinion, obviously).

watchtower -> RE: Matrix Game of the Year (12/17/2005 12:20:25 AM)

TS is on "the list" for me but Starchamber is taking up all my time.

What a game!!!
Fantastic...............
