Ordered under the 1941 "additional programme", this class was designed as a supply base for seaplanes and other flying boats. For this role the vessel was to be armed with 1x 5.5 in. and 4x 25mm AA guns, and fitted to carry 390 tons of cargo including 365 tons of fuel, 11 tons of fresh water, and 60x250 kg bombs and 15 aircraft torpedoes.(The 5.5 in gun was never available and so twin 3in trench mortars were fitted instead and the light AA increased from 4 to 7x25mm AA. It could remain at sea for 60 days, could steam for 13000 sea miles at 14 kts surfaced or 100 sea miles at 3 kts submerged. By end of war, only 1 had been completed, and it was lost at sea July 1945. Another, (the I 352) was destroyed at Kure harbor when 90% complete. displacement:2650 tons dimensions:363ftx33.5 ftx20 ft. crew: 90 Source: Ian Allen, Japanese Warships of WW2
