akcranker -> What are you currently playing? (12/27/2005 10:23:01 AM)

What are you currently playing(Replay, Fictional, Real Players etc.)??

1998 Replay of the St. Louis Cardinals. I've made several trades though so the team makeup is quite different.

Are you managing each game or simming?

For the first-time since I purchased Puresim 2003 I'm managing every game of the season.

How is your team fairing?

Currently my team is 16 - 22 and 3rd in the NL Central.

Rhett -> RE: What are you currently playing? (12/27/2005 10:33:53 AM)

Playing: Cubs starting in 2003
Managing vs Simming: A little of both, though mostly managing so far to get a hang of things/expiriment with the game
Fairing? Poorly, but its very very early. 2-4 right now but Ive made three very nice trades and Im thinking I have a good shot at being a very good team in the long run (maybe not this season, but next season probably). Starting pitching is supurb, provided I dont get bit by the injury bug (ala the real life Cubs [:(])

captskillet -> RE: What are you currently playing? (12/27/2005 2:37:29 PM)

2004 season as Red Sox.can I repeat the magic.

Managing all Red Sox games and simming the rest.

7-4 tied w/Yankees for 1st in AL East.

Thinking about setting up a 3 Division, 2 League All Time Greats drafted league.

Fanshawe40 -> RE: What are you currently playing? (12/27/2005 6:54:54 PM)

1) A league that blends both fictional and real players.

2) Manage all the games that my team plays. Sim the rest.

3) Won the World Series last season (the third season of the league), but right now my team is stuck in third place. Pushed the panic-button and traded some of my veterans in an attempt to get younger...

jono -> RE: What are you currently playing? (12/27/2005 7:18:39 PM)

1) Fictional

2) Managing every game of my team.

3) In my second season with this League. After initial draft in first season picked mostly young players with decent potential and was picked to finish 16th in my 16 team league, finished tied for 13th with a 76-86 record. This season all but my 2 oldest pitchers ratings went up and was picked to finish 2nd with essentialy the same team, currently 103-56 leading my league by 18 games with 3 to play.

motnahp -> RE: What are you currently playing? (12/27/2005 9:35:15 PM)

(1) Twelve-team association made up of randomly assigned real players, all of whom played in real life some time between 1969-2005. Association currently in its 37th year.

(2) I sim games one week at a time, updating the rosters after injuries. I chose one of the teams to call "mine", and occasionally watch one of their games, but never manage.

(3) "My" team has appeared in seven World Series, winning two and losing five.

A couple side notes. The association's winningest pitcher is Vida Blue'71 with 399. Ryan Klekso'94 is the home-run king with 821. Blue is retired and Klesko is 43 years old and still active.

Jliven61 -> RE: What are you currently playing? (12/28/2005 3:46:09 AM)

Currently replaying the 1974 season with the Cardinals. I am 55-57, third in the NL East. Only 2.5 games behind the Pittsburgh Pirates. I manage every game. Inconsistent starting pitching has been my problem all year.

acetonic -> RE: What are you currently playing? (12/28/2005 8:50:10 AM)

Playing a 40 team league starting in 1901 with real and fictional players.
Simming everything right now to build up a league history. I'll take over a team when it gets into the modern era. I will probably sim most games and concentrate on the GM duties once I take over.
The team I intend to manage has a .455 record over the first 18 seasons. I will be a true hero when I lead them to their first world championship!

KG Erwin -> RE: What are you currently playing? (12/29/2005 1:31:15 AM)

I wish I could start a league and stick with it. As most everyone knows by now, the 1946-60 "Golden Age" (with real players and real ballparks) strongly appeals to me, BUT starting in the 21st century (with the modern stadiums) is something I'm considering. AARGH! Too many choices and too little time. [&:]

Burkowski -> RE: What are you currently playing? (12/29/2005 1:24:36 PM)

A fictional league, with cities and teams named by me, two six-team divisions and expansion turned off for about the first 50 years [8D]. Fictional players, with names and bios edited when I feel the need...

Just DLd PureSim this week and am watching PSPN broadcasts of lots of the early games to lock in (in my baseball mind) the players and positions with the teams...

After the first 50 games, things are taking on a real feel, and the players are already developing personalities and characteristics as we build a historical context for the future of the league...

I am impressed with PureSim as a career/historical simulation. It seems to meet just about all of my intuitive expectations about what should be available, in terms of stats and reports... makes me smile...

besbol -> RE: What are you currently playing? (12/29/2005 10:13:47 PM)

I'm simulating Cal Ripken Jr's career by starting a new league each year and letting Puresim import players to their respective teams. I manage the Orioles each year. After each year is complete, I export the data into an Excel spreadsheet and combine all of Cal's stats. I'm up to the start of 1990 and Cal's consecutive game streak is near 1300 games although his offensive stats are not as good as in real life. His BA is .266 with 1388 Hits, 171 HR's, 688 RBI's, 718 R's and 99 SB's!
I also managed to win the WS in 1989.

Johnny Slick -> RE: What are you currently playing? (12/29/2005 11:57:33 PM)

I like to play in what I call "God Mode", where I control all the teams and make roster decisions for them, set lineups, etc. Very rarely do I actually play the games, and when I do I use a method developed by Eugene Church over in OOTP: I sim until the 7th inning and take over at that point. This allows me to do all the "important stuff", and in addition acclimates me well to the players in the league without spending thousands of hours playing out every game.

pkpowers -> RE: What are you currently playing? (1/1/2006 5:35:42 AM)

I'm managing every game for 1971 Houston Astros, it's June 1st, Astros in 1st place with 30-19 record.
Happy New Year [:'(]

khingdheano -> RE: What are you currently playing? (1/10/2006 11:25:48 PM)

1922 season, I manage the St. Louis Browns, every inning of every game.
I made some great trades, acquiring Rogers Hornsby, Dazzy Vance, and Mike McNally...
We are 66-29 and 14 games up on the 2nd place Yankees.

Well the year is 1995, Cal just tore up his shoulder and is out for 5 1/2 weeks. His puresim strreak is over! The good news....... Cal lasted for 2147 games before going down, just beating Gehrig's streak by 17 games. He was well short of his real life record of 2632. I will continue playing him to see how his final stats match up.

Currently playing Major Lge Career Mode as the Red Sox started in 1901 currently starting the 1905 season. 162 game schedule with DH in both leagues.

I am simming just about all games, 2 weeks at a time but very active micro-managing player usage.

In 1901 The Red Sox finished 1st in the AL and lost in 4 to Pitt

In 1902 The Red Sox finished 1st in the AL and beat Pitt in 4 straight (sweet revenge)

In 1903 The Red Sox won a miraculous 119 games on the arms of Cy Young (24-10), George Winter (25-5) and T.F. Brown (19-2), Bob Ewing (25-7 in 61 relief appearances). They beat the Pirates a second straight year, this time in 7.

1904 Was the hangover season and the Red Sox finished 9 games out of first. A slow start by Cy Young and Jimmy Collins dug the hole and key injuries to Ewing, Chick Stahl and Hobe Ferris deflated an August surge that had the Sox within 2 of the lead. Ossee Shreckengost and Charlie Hemphill struggled mightily at the plate all season despite solid ratings. Time to retool the C corps and OF - in my first significant trades I managed to grab Sam Crawford, Jimmy Sebring and Roger Bresnahan. The rest of the lineup looks as it did in 1901.

jimair1 -> RE: What are you currently playing? (3/1/2006 7:34:43 PM)

Currently playing 2003 Season and managing the White Sox. Wow, there is no true leadoff man on this team and second baseman is non-existent! Willie HArris wasn't that horrible. So I've traded for Jerry Hairston straight up for Gary Glover.

1 1/2 Game lead on April 30th

Wow! That's an interesting experiment!

Do you mind posting as a new thread, when you finish up his career - I think it would be handy to be able to find it, separate from this thread!

Beach23BoyP -> RE: What are you currently playing? (3/2/2006 2:35:39 AM)

My fantasy "Western Baseball League"

1) 12 teams / 3 divisions (which allows for four pennant races when you consider the wild card race).

Midwest Divsion
a) Chicago
b) Minnesota
c) Kansas City
d) Texas

Southwest
a) Houston
b) Arizona
c) Los Angeles
d) San Deigo

Northwest
a) San Francisco
b) Colorado
c) Seattle
d) Vancouver

2) Stocked with real players starting from 1951 (The year Mays and Mantle started).

3) 55 players per team (a few scrubs at first)

4) I play out most all of my games. However, I sometimes sim until the 6th or 7th inning if short of time. (I use to sometime play my minor league games, but I never do now.)

5) I play as the Astros manager.

6) I use my "old ballpark paintings" for backdrops.

7) I tweak the xml file about every two years, so I get the exact stats I want. League batting average around .265 or so, with an league ERA of around 4.10. (Still too many "outfield putouts", but I'm working on it.)

BTW, I'm thinking of doing an Astros Skin.

Beach23BoyP -> RE: What are you currently playing? (3/3/2006 1:24:28 AM)

Also, when Shaun releases PS 2006 and three levels of minors I want to go to "fantasy players". Real players are OK, but I want the mystery of fantasy guys. However, I'm convinced that you need three levels of minors to really enjoy the complete fantasy experience.

Any chance you could email me your league file. I have been wanting to do exactly what you have setup and I would love to play around with your version.

Thanks, DNeely

No problem. I've got the psa saved from the beginnning. It is right at 30 megs. I don't think I have that much room on my website. I'll try to figure out how to get it to you Sat.

Now that I think about it -- I like to post it on my website.

I sent it to you via "Yousendit.com"

It is a 15 1/2 meg download. Inlcudes my Real Players 51.xml file,
user xml file, photo cache and the WBL.psa. I also included a screen
shot of the way I have the "windows" laid out -- so they work best with
the backdrops I use. The "user.xml" has these correct settings.

Every time I simulate the first (1951) season the league batting average is
around .265 and the ERA is about 4.10. Usually the Home Run leader
hits about 40 or so HRs. Therefore, I'm very happy with the results.

Here is the (7 day) link for anyone to download:

dneely -> RE: What are you currently playing? (3/4/2006 9:15:51 PM)

Beach23Boy:

I got the file today and have spent most of the morning playing around with it. You did a SUPER job with this league and I am already playing games and having a great time. My original plan was to take over control of the Arizona team but I like the players and the makeup of your Houston team so much I am going to take control of them instead.

Player photos, ballpark photos, team logos! you included everything.

I would strongly recommend this league file to anyone wanting a league setup perfectly and ready to go, or an old guy like me who fondly remembers baseball in the 50's

Thanks Again!!

DNeely

Beach23BoyP -> RE: What are you currently playing? (3/5/2006 1:42:10 AM)

Houston looks good on paper, but I bet you have a hard time winning the division! Maybe a wild card. BTW, I drafted Houston the first 25 rounds or so.

darrellb9 -> RE: What are you currently playing? (3/8/2006 7:45:17 AM)

1. Playing fictional teams in MLB format. Started with 2005 MLB players from Lahman but I believe they're all retired now.

2. I've managed a few games but mostly choose the quicksim option and deal with injuries roster changes prior to each game.

3. Currently in the 12th year of my league and my team the Olypmia Carp have been to the World Series 4 times and won back to back championships in 2009-10. Only have 2 seasons below .500 and one 104 win season, although interestingly enough the 2 yrs I won the championship I was the wild card team and the 104 win season I went out in the first round. 1048-896 all time record. 85-55 so far in the current year.
