I just wish I could get your extended maps to load.

I must be doing something wrong.

I dont use Winzip I just use XP Pro

Any headway on this AB?

The new fonts and smoothed out sea boundaries look great.[8D]

Yes I have made progress, albeit slowly. Hopefully it won't be too much longer before the map is ready to go.

Personally, I can't wait to use it!

I have liked all of Andrews' maps, and probably would not care if they were all green, or tepia, or shades of gray, etc.
I appreciate the research he did on the distances, and cannot imagine playing without the Middle East or Panama anymore...............
Chrome ?? Try some bold white on those reefs.

This would be cool to see around atolls.
It would help to differentiate them from other islands.[8D]

"I just wish I could get your extended maps to load"

Sardonic, you must read the txt's. All the installation steps (from A to Z) are very well explained. If I remember correctly there are 4 steps:

1) install Andrew Brown's map (the standard)
2) install Andrew Brown's extended map
3) install the art files
4) finally, install CHS scenarios

But as I have said, do read the txt's. It is a must. Do not forget to click on modselect.bat after steps 1) and 2) -- and maybe even after 3), I can't remember though.

Andrew - Fantastic!![&o][&o]

Is this for CHS use only?

No. There will be conversions of stock scenarios and Nik's scenario, as before.

Love it. [&o] While I most appreciate the better geography in your maps, it will make it all the more enjoyable to have better aesthetics too.

Question: is there currently a list available of the changes you're making in version 5.0? I'm specifically wondering if it will be usable with games currently in progress, or if there's substantial enough changes in the PWHEX that that wouldn't be practical.

ckk -> RE: New map style for my map - comments? (1/16/2006 7:20:04 AM)

Before I switched to AB maps I used subchaser's. So I'll be happy with your combination. Go to it!!![8D]

witpqs -> RE: New map style for my map - comments? (1/16/2006 7:28:38 AM)

Andrew,

It looks really good!

FYI, I played a couple of long games with Subchaser's map, which I liked as well, before switching to your current map. I like the current version of your map better than I like Subchaser's map. The reason is that during a long gaming session the ocean colors on Subchaser's map made me bug-eyed. The new color you have for shallow ocean is brighter than your current color for same, but still darker than Subchaser's (as it should be). Subchaser's map is great, but please don't emulate his color scheme all the way, or else I will be [sm=00000116.gif]

Thanks! [8D]

Andrew Brown -> RE: New map style for my map - comments? (1/19/2006 3:09:02 PM)

Here is a screenshot - converted to JPEG - of one of the map styles being tested in-game. I have changed the fonts (except the base fonts) to a serif font. I still have to complete the map data, the documentation and convert a few scenarios before releasing the map.

Arkady -> RE: New map style for my map - comments? (1/19/2006 4:28:45 PM)

for sea and ocean names try font Monotype Corsiva, I don't know if it is the same font that Subchaser used but looks very, very similar... and if you have MS Office, you should have this font already

Tristanjohn -> RE: New map style for my map - comments? (1/19/2006 5:58:39 PM)

I've kinda lost track of the work CHS has performed. What happened to Milne Bay? How many bases in all have been eliminated? Or is it actually there but I just can't see it graphically?

I agree that a muted color scheme is desirable. Too many hours poring over a garish map makes for eye fatigue. When it comes to color saturation, your average joe seems to prefer LOUD colors. But that's because your average joe has an attention span of about five minutes (when he's concentrating with all his might) and so he doesn't often bother to study maps. Mostly he just sits at home in his free time and stares at a TV screen that comes from the factory set with LOUD colors. Our average joe does suffer eye strain there, of course, though he isn't particularily aware of it. He probably just writes that off to a another hard day at the office . . . where he might well have sat all day long staring like a doped doll at a computer screen that came from the factory with its saturation set too . . . LOUD.

Andrew,

What are the yellow bases and units - is that the new color for Japan? If so, wht will be the color for China?

TJ, Milne Bay is there, but it's at present a size 0,0. I forget what it is capable of buing built to, but at the start of the war there was only a small pier at Gili Gili and no airstrip.

Mistmatz -> RE: New map style for my map - comments? (1/20/2006 6:51:21 PM)

... which reminds me of a question I wanted to ask for a long time.

If I mouse over a dot base how would I know what the max level for a port or airstrip would be? Is this information anywhere in game?

bradfordkay -> RE: New map style for my map - comments? (1/20/2006 7:12:43 PM)

You have to click on the dot base to bring up the base information screen. The mouse over doesn't give enough information on dot bases (maybe considers them unsurveyed?).

I have a good suggestion for WitP part deux (WitP2) if anyone decides to take on the task. In regards to the dot bases perhaps a mechansim could be programmed in to randomize the maximum size of bases. Hence the need to survey dots instead of having foreknowledge of what the good base locations are.

IRL the Japanese occupied Tulagi to establish a seaplane base and it wasn't till after they arrived and surveyed Guadacanal that they decided to build an airstrip. Another good example is the field at Dobodura. IRL the Japanese never realized the potential of the fields there, whereas Allied Engineers had discovered them and established a very significant airbase.

I realize that the historicity would no longer apply but it would reintroduce an element of FOW and potentially slow down the pace of operations.

It is confirmed. Subcahser in fact used Monotype Corsiva. It resides in the "C" section of the font drop down window of Photoshop. That is a "money" font for bodies of water...

Zakhal -> RE: New map style for my map - comments? (1/21/2006 1:15:06 AM)

Very nice work. That map looks much more user friendly and pleasing to the eye than the official game maps.

No, that colour is just what I use for the ANZAC units in my personal icon set (it is meant to be a sort of "khaki" colour). It is nothing to do with the map so please ignore it.

Andrew

But how is this going to work when the dot base is one from the enemy?

" But how is this going to work when the dot base is one from the enemy?"

It doesn't! How can you survey an enemy base?!

Andrew, "Bloody Shambles" mentions that the RAAF Hudsons were attacking Japanese shipping at Menado from both Ambon(ia) and Namlea. Has there been any thought to increasing the airfield size at Namlea (maybe a 2(4) with no base force)?

Interesting! One day I am going to buy those books...

I guess I should look at changing it.

bradfordkay -> RE: New map style for my map - comments? (1/23/2006 5:00:57 AM)

I made a mistake. Try a 2(1) with no base force... [sm=00000002.gif]

Good catch. I've threatened to look into that ever since Andrew first told us he didn't know what that font was, but I never got around to it somehow. I've always thought Subchaser's map was the best by a mile, and the most utilitarian, too, with those colorerd icons to denote at a glance resources and such.

Are you finally done with your art yet? If so, I'd love to load the new files and look at them. I'm out of date here by at least six months.
