DeepSix -> The soundtrack quits playing (1/8/2006 11:23:31 PM)

If I may ask what could be a stupid question (as yet unanswered by a forum search) -- why does my soundtrack suddenly stop playing while in the middle of the game (v1.6)? The game does not CTD, but sometimes the soundtrack just cuts out. Sometimes it happens even when I'm not doing anything (e.g. issuing orders, building TFs, etc.) other than reading intel.

Anybody else run into this? Have I just missed the answer before?

Thanks,
Rob

[Edit: P.S. -- Pentium 2.4, 2 gigs RAM, older soundblaster card... driver issue perhaps?]

Do you loose the click sounds too when you click buttons (ie: no sound at all) or just loose the music?

DeepSix -> RE: The soundtrack quits playing (1/9/2006 12:41:50 AM)

Hi Frag, thanks! The click sounds are fine -- it's just the soundtrack (music) that cuts out. Also, it's just the score that plays in the game; starting or quitting out to the splash screens -- the music there plays fine.

Funny you mention the click FX, though -- when I start the game, the music plays, but clicking on the dialog buttons (->) makes the soundtrack "stutter." Sounds sort of like a very small, low-volume static discharge. Or like a speaker "fart." Funny thing is that clicking the buttons also has the same effect on whatever I'm playing in WinAmp -- but only when playing WitP (WinAmp works fine all other times).

Never had this happen until some random time ago under v1.5. I waited until I applied 1.6 to ask about it (was sort of hoping it might just go away[:)]). Haven't tried uninstall/reinstall (laziness on my part); playing WitP is the only time I have any sort of sound issues.

Thanks again,
Rob

Sounds like your sound drivers/codex got messed with by something else ... changing WitP will not make any difference. The sound files are nothing more the Windows Media format renamed to .sfx instead of .avi

greetings...

i have same problems as DS described....

so solution would be?....

thx in advance

DeepSix -> RE: The soundtrack quits playing (1/9/2006 9:40:12 PM)

I'm wondering about that, too, Pauk. Frag, thanks for the lead -- what else, though, would "mess with" WitP sound files? An .mp3 player? Another installation? Any usual suspects I should look for?

Thanks,
Rob

Anything that messes with the default out of the box media player could be to blame.

MP3 players, other games that install extra stuff, sound driver updates, etc ...

Ok, thanks for the tip; I'll let you know what I work out (if anything[;)])

DeepSix -> Update (1/10/2006 7:18:39 PM)

Ok, I discovered that the newest update for my sound driver is only 2 weeks old -- I updated to that version, and that took care of the weird stuttering effect. It also improved the reliability of the music score. It still quits mid-game, but it seems more infrequent.

DeepSix -> Bump (1/11/2006 11:11:38 PM)

Well... Music is still cutting out, about once per turn (so ixnay what I said about it becoming less frequent -- it is still there). Seems to happen only during the give orders phase, but that's as predictable as it gets, unfortunately. With some experimenting, I have learned that

1) the game eventually stops responding each time I ignore the sound issue and keep playing. Usually after I've finished the orders phase, occurring either during combat or shortly after starting the next orders phase.

2) if I quit to the menu and reload the game, the music plays briefly and then quits again; I have to completely quit the game and launch it again in order to get the music back (until it quits again, of course).

Any other ideas anyone?

Thanks,
Rob

Mr.Frag -> RE: Bump (1/11/2006 11:13:26 PM)

rename sound directory to nosound just to get rid of it completely ... what happens ... game still lock up?

DeepSix -> RE: Bump (1/12/2006 11:16:33 PM)

No, I played a full turn and a half (combat + orders + combat) without a hitch. Although obviously without any sound of any kind.

Thanks,
Rob
