Speedysteve -> RE: 16th July 1943 (5/11/2006 12:28:19 PM)

Hi Mike,

I haven't decided yet.

There are options:

1. North Pacific - not likely due to my feint prompting Faber to turn the area into a fortress.

2. Wake/Eniwetok - still an option.

3. Tarawa/Nanomea - option.

4. Solomans - option.

5. NG - not likely due to the slow slogging process up the land mass.

6. Timor - option due to me having total air superiority.

First things first though. I'm going to get all my damaged ships to the right ports. Then we can see what I have to move my combat ready LCU's where I want them. Then we can get the shipping there etc. In the meantime my CV's are to go raiding. Not saying where on this one. I want it to be a surprise for all[;)] As I say though i'm going to wait until i'm stocked with Hellcats and I have my 4th CV TF operational - CV Bunker Hill, CV Intrepid, 2 x CVL's.

Kereguelen -> RE: 16th July 1943 (5/11/2006 1:30:18 PM)

Considering that you own Canton and Baker, Tarawa currently seems to be the best option (IMHO). If he owns (?) Nanomea, even more. Controlling the Gilbert Islands will shorten your supply lines and give you some bases for attacks in all directions.

The Solomon route seems to be the most problematic route of advance if Faber has build up the airfields there because his LBA is probably still intact, thus simply let his troops rot on this malaria-ridden islands!

K

Speedysteve -> RE: 16th July 1943 (5/11/2006 10:27:29 PM)

Hmm. Not heard from Faber for a couple of days now. Hope all is well his end.

Mynok -> RE: 16th July 1943 (5/11/2006 10:52:05 PM)

Open your refrigerators carefully! [:D]

Speedysteve -> 17th July 1943 (5/12/2006 1:03:34 AM)

Hi all,

A mainly sub action day with IJN ASW assets trying their best but failing:

SS Whale was hunted throughout the day by 2 x DD and 3 x MSW. The DD's dropped 10's of DC's some of which landed near. Damge was slight (22 SYS). Returning to Midway.

SS Sawfish fired 4 fish at MSW w.7 60 miles NW od San Marcelino......which missed.

SS Grampus was briefly attacked by DD Makinami 180 miles SE of Hong Kong. Light damage was sutained.

---------------

Damaged ships repairing, flooding decreasing, CV's moving to PH for R & R, troops replenishing.......

Mike Solli -> RE: 17th July 1943 (5/12/2006 1:20:07 AM)

Hey Speedy,

You using Nik's Mod for this game?

Speedysteve -> RE: 17th July 1943 (5/12/2006 2:08:48 AM)

Hi Mike,

Standard game my friend....why you ask?

Steven

Mike Solli -> RE: 17th July 1943 (5/12/2006 3:48:33 AM)

Just curious. Looks like my oldest PBEM may be down the tubes.[:(] Looking at possibly starting a mod. Any suggestions?

Mynok -> RE: 17th July 1943 (5/12/2006 5:00:29 AM)

Ouch, bud. Sorry about that. I've not played NikMod but I like CHS. RHS is worth a look too, as el cid is very knowledgeable. I'd ask this in the main forum.

jeffs -> RE: 17th July 1943 (5/12/2006 5:16:50 AM)

I just started the Nik Mod 5.02 (as allies) and like it...It, from little I have played, feels right...

Some of the AARs have every A2A combat a winner take all death fest.....And that seems overdoing it......

That said, I know nothing of CHS.....

Speedysteve -> 18th July 1943 (5/12/2006 1:47:27 PM)

Hi all,

Sorry to hear that Mike. I can recommend Nik Mod. I play that as you know [;)]

---------------

SS Seal made a successful attack on AK Nozima Maru. The freighter was left heavily damaged and low in the water after being hit by a torpedo in the bow area. The attack occured near the SW tip of Borneo.

Intel also received confirmation that I-6 sank 120 miles north of Eniwetok. This puppy was reported heavily damaged on 10th July after interfering with my CV escorts.

---------------

Heavy bombing by me in Burma. The first bombing mission by the new P38 FG:

Day Air attack on 3rd Tank Div , at 34,28

Allied aircraft
Spitfire Vb x 6
Beaufighter VIC x 24
Beaufighter Mk 21 x 10
P-38G Lightning x 38

No Allied losses

Japanese ground losses:
107 casualties reported
Guns lost 2
Vehicles lost 2

Aircraft bombing at 2000 feet

---------------

My CV's should be at PH within 2-3 days time.

Tomorrow an AO and an APD arrive at San Francisco

Rob Brennan UK -> RE: 18th July 1943 (5/12/2006 9:35:38 PM)

Hi speedy .. can you post a screenie of burma please

I'd be interested to see the state of the RAF at this date ( never been this far in any of my games).

Speedysteve -> RE: 18th July 1943 (5/12/2006 10:29:34 PM)

Hi Rob,

A map of Burma or of the air units?

Speedysteve -> 19th July 1943 (5/13/2006 10:56:28 AM)

Hi all,

My subs were in action across the theatre today.

SS Raton had only recently arrived on station in between Guam and Truk. Today she located and heavily damaged the empty transport Nissen Maru with a torpedo.

SS Permit found her first ship of the war inbetween Lae and Sag Sag. Her fish unfortunately missed AK Shinetsu Maru.

SS Silversides heavily damaged PG Sozan Maru with a torepdo 180 miles WE of Hong Kong.

---------------

Will soon be time for another attack at Myitkyina. Once my AV reaches 2500 again:

Ground combat at Myitkyina

Allied Bombardment attack

Attacking force 99357 troops, 936 guns, 465 vehicles, Beginning Assault Value = 2385

Defending force 135068 troops, 700 guns, 0 vehicles, Beginning Assault Value = 2511

Japanese ground losses:
50 casualties reported
Guns lost 2

-----------------

My CV's will reach PH tomorrow and rest until they have received Hellcats andTBM's and when the Bunker Hill/Intrepid TF arrives.

SS Escolar and an LST arrive at San Francisco tomorrow

Rob Brennan UK -> RE: 19th July 1943 (5/13/2006 5:47:31 PM)

the air units really pls speedy .. i'm curious as to the mix of british fighters and bombers .. as some bomber units can upgrade to hurricanes but that leaves less bombers and too many fighters imo.

rtrapasso -> RE: 19th July 1943 (5/14/2006 6:53:45 AM)

Ode to Wake Island Redux:

Hope’s dashed to the floor
And shattered Speedy's dreams
Invading Wake Island
Can make a player scream

(bridge 1)
That walk in the park can become a bad dream
Penguins are laughing and mocking my schemes
This is the only escape from it all:
Imitate the Leopard seal mating call!

(chorus)
Oh, Wake Island is waiting
Waiting for Speedy
Oh, Wake Island is waiting
Waiting for Speedy
Oh, Wake Island is waiting
Waiting for Speedy
(Waiting for Speedy)
Oh, Wake Island is waiting

We don't need a plan
We've got nerves of steel
Speedy's troops retreated
Tell us what’s deal.

(bridge 2)
You’re bombing, you’re shelling, a freefire spree
I never want this to happen to me
Don't try invading, you're wasting your time
Wake Island’s waters are heavily mined!

Oh, Wake Island is waiting
Waiting for Speedy
Oh, Wake Island is waiting
Waiting for Speedy
Oh, Wake Island is waiting
Waiting for Speedy
(Waiting for Speedy)
Oh, Wake Island is waiting

That walk in the park can become a bad dream
Penguins are shooting and firing at me
This is the only escape from it all:
Bombing those penguins until they fall.

Speedysteve -> 20-21st July 1943 (5/14/2006 12:59:34 PM)

Hi all,

LOL Robert. Brilliant. Thank you[:D]

Rob - No problem. I'll list them at tne end of the report and show a screenie of Burma.

A 2 day update since things are quiet compared to the previous month!

A couple of sub contatcs:

SS Peto was attacked by a mixed PG/MSW group inbetween Eniwetok and Truk. No significant damage caused.

A couple of I-boats were detected in the south Pacific. An ASW group in en route to 1 position.

------------------

Usual air raids over Burma and China.

Speedysteve -> 22nd July 1943 (5/15/2006 11:46:12 AM)

Hi all,

Curses! SS Shark II attacked her first enemy ship today. BB Hyuga no less! Unfortunately the 4 torpedo's all missed their target. The attack happened inbetween Truk and Guam. This puppy was damaged during Operation Falcon and is probably returning to Japan for repairs. Annoyingly 2 x CVE's were also located in this TF:

BB Hyuga
DD Akebono
DD Ariake
DD Yugure
DD Yamakaze
DD Shigure
DD Onami
CVE Unyo
CVE Taiyo

She is relocating a further 120 miles north to try and catch these guys (I doubt it).

-------------

Some mine's laid at Eniwetok by SS O19 had success today. PC Fumi Maru was left heavily damaged after hitting one of my babies[:)]

-------------

The time is nearing in Burma for another attempt at Myitkyina:

Ground combat at Myitkyina

Allied Bombardment attack

Attacking force 100041 troops, 963 guns, 468 vehicles, Beginning Assault
Value = 2429

Defending force 134341 troops, 668 guns, 0 vehicles, Beginning Assault Value
= 2502

Japanese ground losses:
251 casualties reported
Guns lost 1

--------------

CV Lexington received her Hellcat's today[8D]

Tomorrow an AK and a DE arrive at San Francisco.

Speedysteve -> RE: 22nd July 1943 (5/15/2006 11:47:05 AM)

I'm going to be busy over this week so will have little time for gaming i'm afraid followers. Thanks to those who read and contribute[8D]

Speedysteve -> 23rd July 1943 (5/18/2006 12:26:54 PM)

Hi all,

Managed to sneak this in this morning. Wow I found a spare 20 minutes before work![;)]

Bad weather prevented many air strikes being launched. Only a raid against Mandalay and a few bombing runs on IJA troop positions were carried out.

---------------

3 x APD's were sub hunting west of Attu Island. I had forgot to order CAP for them and Betties were launched from Paramushiro. APD Little unfortunately sank quickly. APD Stringham is limping back to Attu heavily damaged. APD McKean is fine and is returning to Attu. Hmm.....

--------------

CV Intrepid arrives in 10 days time, CVL Langley in 15 days time [8D]

2 x DD, an SS, an AK, an LCI, an LST and an AP arrive at San Francisco tomorrow

Speedysteve -> 24th July 1943 (5/22/2006 12:20:31 PM)

Hi all,

The end of my busy week! Still got a few things to iron out but a more regular turnaround should occur from me (Faber is busy over the next 2 weeks).

------------------

1 of my ASW groups found their victim - I-5, inbetween Fuji and Noumea. After hunting and dropping DC's throughout the day the Japanese submarine was reportedly left heavily damaged. My ships are returning to Noumea after a job well done.

SS Sawfish was detected but not attacked by MSW Toshi Maru #5 just off the west coast of Luzon.

SS Billfish successfully damaged a freighter (Nitiai Maru) SW of Hong Kong.

------------------

A token raid by Libs from Attu to Paramushiro achieved little. 29 enemy fighters was on CAP and shot down 2 bombers.

Air raids by me across Burma.

------------------

All remaining cruisers and destroyers have left Australia bound for Noumea, then PH..............

Speedysteve -> 25th July 1943 (5/22/2006 2:25:35 PM)

Hi all,

Firstly, is there any information or screenies that you guys want at the moment?

Good news. Intel received confirmation that SS I-5 sank after the damage it received yesterday from my ASW forces.

SS Tambor was attacked by a couple of MSW's in the strait between Borneo and Sulawesi. 3 DC's landed nearby causing some minor damage. She is low on fuel as is and will remain on station for a few more days before returning to Darwin for R & R.

----------------

Heavy bombing raids in Burma. An example of what the IJA is receiving on the Mandalay rail line:

Day Air attack on 30th Division, at 34,28

Allied aircraft
Spitfire Vb x 6
Beaufighter VIC x 23
Beaufighter Mk 21 x 10
P-38G Lightning x 47

No Allied losses

Japanese ground losses:
187 casualties reported
Guns lost 10
Vehicles lost 1

----------------------

The IJA tried to force their way through the defences on the Mandalay Rail Line but were repulsed with HEAVY casualties. No breakthrough occured and my men are in good spirit:

Ground combat at 34,28

Japanese Deliberate attack

Attacking force 261524 troops, 2685 guns, 984 vehicles, Assault Value = 5631

Defending force 87325 troops, 703 guns, 982 vehicles, Assault Value = 2132

Japanese max assault: 4911 - adjusted assault: 4149

Allied max defense: 2221 - adjusted defense: 4581

Japanese assault odds: 0 to 1

Japanese ground losses:
11595 casualties reported
Guns lost 296
Vehicles lost 52

Allied ground losses:
1023 casualties reported
Guns lost 37
Vehicles lost 3

--------------------

All active MSW's and transports in Australia are forming up to move to Sydney and Brisbane. From there I decide where I will form up my transports (from Midway/PH) to embark LCU's from the South Pacific for offensive operations over the next few months.

CV Intrepid arrives in 8 days [8D]

An LST and an AK arrive tomorrow as does a PV1n squadron. A newly arrived Wellington squadron is retraining on Liberators at Calcutta before moving to the front for combat operations.

Hi all,

LOL Pauk. I'll find the git eventually and send him to meet his ancestors[;)]

--------------

My subs performed well today.

Especially SS Pogy. Located 300 miles ENE of Pagan to interceot shipping moving to Wake and the Marshalls she located a Transport convoy in the early hours of the morning. She picked out a transport and 3 torpedos hit home on the empty transport Bokuyo Maru. She quickly sank. Only 1 DD was escorting the convoy which failed to locate Pogy.

In the atfernoon she attacked a further AP Batavia Maru and heavily damaged her with a torpedo.

SS Tambor also got into the action. Despite being low on fuel and having a few battle scars she heavily damaged the empty freighter Nitiren Maru in the Sulawesi Strait.

------------------

Heavy air attacks by me in Burma.

------------------

An AK arrives at San Francisco tomorrow

Here's some upcoming air reinforcements. Some lovely Corsairs and Hellcats in there[8D]

Hi all,

LOL Capt. Agreed. They will be in them for what......oooooooh.....10 seconds [;)]

----------------

A fairly quiet day with no sub contacts and only some bombing raids in Burma and China.

----------------

My men at Myitkyina are to 'have another go' tomorrow. After weeks of bombardment from the ground and air and with probably limited re-supply lets see how much fight the Japanese have left in them here. Here's the intel and recon info gathering strength levels:

7th June 1943: Defending force 153841 troops, 1064 guns, 11 vehicles, Beginning Assault Value = 2934
24th June 1943: Defending force 146977 troops, 886 guns, 9 vehicles, Beginning Assault Value = 2780
27th July 1943: Defending force 132293 troops, 619 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 2455

In the past month the Japanese strength has dwindled by: 14864 men, 267 guns and 9 vehicles[X(]

Might be a good idea to rest your troops for one turn with out doing any bombardment attacks before you do your 'have another go' deliberate attack.
