Speedysteve -> 8th January 1944 (10/18/2006 10:30:09 PM)

Hi all,

What a day! WiTP is great with days like these. The best gaming experience out there.........

-------------------

Operation Buzzard is a day out from Moulmein now. Enemy aircraft attacked the slowest convoy....lagging 60 miles behind the main body. A P38J FG was flying cover from Akyab though. these 80 experience veterans performed very well today:

46 of them met 162 enemey fighters (Zeke, Tojo, Tony) and 50 x G4M2 over the convoy. Almost 1/2 of my brave boys were shot down but they took 49 x Tojo, 45 x Tony, 15 x Zeke and 9 x G4M2 with them.

40 x G4M broke through though but the performed very poorly or my ships performed magnificently. Only 1 torpedo hit home on AK Empire Conrad, carrying 20th Indian Division troops. This left her heavily damaged though and hopefully she can unload before sinking - 78/75/13

Tomorrow should be a big day as SEAC forces land on enemy beaches in Burma for the first time. Other good news is that Recon and Liberators hit Moulmein today (somehow) identifying troops of 133rd IJN Base Force and 47th Construction Battalion = old men and boys [;)] Let's hope thats all that there tomorrow when we go ashore.

In all 55 Allied planes were lost today to 121 Japanese.
-----------------

Meanwhile at Lautem the IJN has developed NUCLEAR shells:

Naval bombardment of Lautem, at 33,78

Allied aircraft
no flights

Allied aircraft losses
P-47D Thunderbolt: 4 destroyed
Sunderland: 1 destroyed
Beaufort V-IX: 2 destroyed
Vengeance I: 3 destroyed

DD Oshio
DD Arashi
DD Nowaki
DD Amatsukaze
CL Yura
CL Noshiro
CL Agano

Allied ground losses:
17376 casualties reported
Guns lost 20
Vehicles lost 24

Airbase hits 6
Airbase supply hits 7
Runway hits 15
Port hits 1
Port supply hits 10

WTF[8|]

I am not angry at this or going to moan but more bemused how that TF can cause 17,000 casualties whilst my constant bombardments of Wake rarely cause 500-1000 casualties DESPITE Wake being reconned for a month solid AND containing 8-9 units to my 4 at Lautem...........no biggie though.

------------------

No Submarine contacts today.

SS I-159 (damaged by DD's near Wake a few days ago) was reported sunk today.

Air sightings = 16
Air attacks = 1

------------------

Tomorrow should be fun.

A DE arrives in theatre tomorrow.

Below the dogfights SEAC troops disembarked whilst the heavy guns of the Royal Navy pounded away. Casualties were pretty low and no mines are present [:)]

By the end of the day 1/3 of the offensive troops are ashore and things are looking good. Recon elements encountered supprot troops but also troops of 4th Mixed Regiment. We continue to unload tomorrow before advancing on Moulmein itself - 20th Indian Division + 2 x UK Bde should wade ashore tomorrow.

Thee's no doubting the slaughter of enemy aircraft helpsa lot. I think the invasion should be relatively safe now. Just to capture the place quikcly. Troops at Mandalay report Lashio based troops retreating past Mandalay....probably to Moulmein.

-------------------

Wake is pounded from air and sea - 2 x BB bombardments cause 1200 casualties. Massive airstrike again.

That is VERY impressive, especially considering that the "Kongo" class are the weakest-gunned BB's in the IJN arsenal. Is it possible the game considered your forces to be moving in the open, and thus scattered and disrupted rather than killed?

Speedysteve -> 10th January 1944 (10/19/2006 10:59:11 PM)

Hi all,

Hi Capt. - don't know about that. I've discussed how etc this may have happened on the main forum. It seems DL and Fort level are possible answers. Either way when those b*stards turn turtle due to my actions I will not regret it.

--------------

A quieter day today but a crucial one for SEAC forces. 80% of my men are ashore at Moulmein. Tomorrow they attack. Recon has identified enemy postions and the platoons have been briefied. I am confident of success. It's important we take Moulmein quickly since Allied troops have spotted enemy troops leaving Lashio/Mandalay........presumably for Moulmein. A screenie of present troops is below.

No enemy air attacks today which is good.

Fighters intercepted enemy air transports over Moulmein shooting down 18 x Topsy and 7 x Sally.

--------------

Wake was hit heavily again by my CV's and a BB division. The CV's are retiring to Midway now to refuel and re-arm. Next time we come with transports and invasion......

--------------

SS Angler was hunted by 5 x ASW vessels which she evaded near Tori Shima.

Air sightings = 16
Air attacks = 2

--------------

An AK, AP and an AV arrive in theatre tomorrow.

Hi speedy, sorry long time since catching up with you here, looks like your having fun, but bombardments like that are rare fortunately and it'll make faber happy (i.e longer game) [;)]

slightly OT .. but whats happened to your hammering of swift ? i was following that one more so than here (whisper ---sorry)..

good luck in both though [:D]

Wishing Speedy luck??!! He's the Allied player! He's got so much stuff he's probably lost a few CVs. [X(] [;)]

Speedysteve -> 11th January 1944 (10/20/2006 12:46:41 AM)

Hi all

Moulmein fell to SEAC forces today! A major victory for the Allies that could lead to the end of the Japanese occupation of Burma.. I still feel speed is of the essence. As mentioned recon and Allied troops report masses of Japanese troops passing from Lashio through Mandalay. It is assumed these are heading for Moulmein.

The place was captured but needs some sorting out with both the airfields and port heavily damaged. As suich planes will not be flown in tomororw but hopefully the day after.

Also complicatign matetr is the IJN. Walrus FP's spotted 2 x TF heading towards the region. It is assumed these are both SC's/CV TF's. As such my CV's and transports have been ordered to disperse 120 miles west of Moulmein whilst my 2 x SC TF's have been ordered to stay off Moulmein in case enemy TF's approcach my new base.

If he moves to Moulmeim I have 6 x BB to meet him and my Avenger's have been ordered to attack enemy shipping tomorrow. P38J's will fly cover over the area also.

Either way it does disrupt the landing of supplies, fuel and support units which is not good.

Here's the attack on Moulmein:

Ground combat at Moulmein

Allied Deliberate attack

Attacking force 42592 troops, 236 guns, 925 vehicles, Assault Value = 1199

Defending force 10251 troops, 58 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 192

Allied engineers reduce fortifications to 5

Allied max assault: 1095 - adjusted assault: 749

Japanese max defense: 118 - adjusted defense: 18

Allied assault odds: 41 to 1 (fort level 5)

Allied forces CAPTURE Moulmein base !!!

Japanese ground losses:
2140 casualties reported
Guns lost 41

Allied ground losses:
191 casualties reported
Guns lost 4
Vehicles lost 2

Defeated Japanese Units Retreating!

----------------

Fabertong launched a nice raid against Akyab today. Some Spitfire's were flying cover but 50 x Sally bombed the airfield destroying 20 planes (18 x P38J). Nice raid.

Enemy planes have bneen reported at Tavoy. These may be fighters or bombers but Liberators at Imphal have been ordered to bomb the airfields there.

More enemy Topsy's were shot down over Moulmein today (20).

-----------------

BB New Mexico was torpedoed by I-42 300 miles east of Wake. 2 torpedoes hi home leaving her heavily damaged - 51/33/16. She will return to Midway and then PH. I-42 was hunted to extinction after her indiscretion.

SS I-158 was also heavily damaged by CVE DE's escorts.

SS Shark II heavily damaged the empty transport Kyushu Maru with a torpedo 240 miles WNW of Iwo Jima.

SS S-38 was hit by a Judy off Menado - 7/20/0.

------------------

A DD arrives in theatre tomorrow.

Sure did.

Also I checked my bases and the ONLY 1 exceeding 50*AF size was Akyab. As such I moved out a 72 plane P47D FG. If only they had been there yesterday[8|][:D]

Nevermind they will be at Moulmein soon.

Hi all,

Well bad news. Even with 40% CAP the Allied bonuses in CAP and Radar provide high levels of fighters. Look at this:

Day Air attack on TF at 27,35

Japanese aircraft
A6M5 Zeke x 3
J2M Jack x 6
G4M2 Betty x 35
Ki-61 KAIc Tony x 3

Ki-61 KAIc Tony: 3 destroyed

Allied aircraft losses
Corsair IV: 7 damaged

3 x G4M2 Betty launching torpedoes at 200 feet
2 x G4M2 Betty launching torpedoes at 200 feet

The Japanese lost a further 198 planes today to my 34...............

------------------

A bit disappointingly the Japanese TF's did not advance to Moulmien. Neitgher did they launch air raids so I assume they are SC TF's......I can't afford to waste anymore time at Moulmein (after reading the German views on Market Garden I am treating this as a time is important operation and I can't allow the Japanese to bring superior force to bear). As such the convoys and CV's are moving back to Moulmein under cover of the SC TF's. It's risky but I need the support and supply ashore......only then will I advance with my Armour.

-----------------

The damage has all been repaired at Lautem now and hopefully the engineers will finish the 4th airfield tomorrow. Once they do further Mediums will fly in to bomb Koepang....then we advance there..........

-----------------

SS Burrfish missed AK Yamagiku Maru with 4 torpedoes 60 miles NW of Pontianak.

SS Argonaut evaded 4 x ASW craft 300 miles north of Pagan.

SS Stonehenge scored her first success of the war by heavily damaging the small Minelayer Saishu with a torpedo 60 miles NW of Kuala Lumpur (one of a batch of boats directed to the region to 'cut it off' from Japanese Naval forces.

Air sightings = 16
Air attacks = 3

-----------------

CVE White Plains, 2 x Tk, 2 x LCI, an LCI (G) and a DD arrive in theatre tomorrow.

Speedysteve -> 13th January 1944 (10/21/2006 11:44:24 AM)

Hi all,

Well not enemy air attacks in Burma whatsoever today and i'm not surprised. Faber has reacted VERY quickly on the ground though. Scouts report 12 enemy units north of Moulmein! WTF[X(]

The remaining support elements will be unloaded tomorrow.

The enemy TF's appear to have retreated and SS Stonehenage reported seeing one of the SC TF's pass Georgetown today.

I am concerned by the number of enemy troops approaching Moulmein from the South and the North. I fear another Anzio.........my BB's and CV's could be crucial in holding off the enemy forces. Hopefully the 12 enemy units north of my positions are small scratch units rather than whole divisions.

Recon is flying every day around my perimeter to determine what the enemy has.

Another Indian Division will be available for deployment in a weeks time. It will be moved to Moulmein also.

------------------

Hiei and Kirishima returned to Lautem today to pound it again. 45 planes were destroyed on the ground. The SeeBees are now at 11/74[8|]

This p*sses me off and i'm going to do something about it soon. B24J's will begin to pound Koepang. I will then rush in troops to secure the place and then i'll have 2 decent airfields in the area. Both will be stocked with Torpedo planes and i'm also going to bring CD's units into theatre.

The irony of Faber's atacks was that DD Arashi hit a Japanese mine whilst approaching Lautem leaving it heavily damaged.

-------------------

SS Grunion sank the empty Freighter Sinsei Maru with 3 torpedoes over 2 attacks 60 miles east of Tarakan.

SS S-37 damaged AK Shinyubari Maru with a torpedo 240 miles ENE of Kendari.

SS Whale missed AP Miike Maru with 4 torpedoes 60 miles NW of Tori Shima.

SS S-45 damaged AP Ayatosan Maru with 2 torpedoes 60 miles SW of Kunashiro Jima (Lower Kuriles). She was carrying troops. 29 of which died in the attack.

Air sightings = 14
Air attacks = 1

--------------------

My CV's have returned to Midway to quickly refuel and re-arm. They are hopefully heading back to Wake tomorrow.

Troops are beginning to embark on transports...........

F5C's will fly Recon over wake from Majuro. Let's see if these help produce 'Nuke attacks' from my upcoming bombardments.

--------------------

An AK arrives in theatre tomorrow as does a Dakota Squadron.

Speedysteve -> 14th January 1944 (10/21/2006 4:05:38 PM)

Hi all,

Almost all troops are ashore at Moulmein now.

Recon indicates 12 units with 36,000 men to the NE. I suspect this is innacurate but i've ordered att ARM units + 2 x Bde to move out the NE...............

FB's at Akyab and Moulmein will begin bombing and attacking enemy troops in preparation for my advance.

I have ordered 1 of my BB TF's to bombard Tavoy further down the coast. The airfield is being used by fighters and recon and contains IJA elements. Let's see if my recon will produce a nuke attack[;)]

12 x G4M2 attacked a returning convoy 300 miles NW of Andaman Island. CL Dragion received 2 x bomb hits in the aft area cauaing heavy damage - 56/13/17. She will return to Columbo for extensive repairs.

------------------

Koepang was attacked and men of Yokosuka 3rd SNLF were hit hard. 164th RCT and 2nd Aus Tk. Rgt are embarking at Darwin for invasion.

------------------

CV's and BB's are back on their way to Wake..........

------------------

SS Angler capsized AK Taketoyo Maru with 3 torpedoes 240 miles WNW of Tori Shima. 1 x DC landed nearby - 5/0/0

SS S-45 was chased off by escorts 60 miles SW of Kunishiri Jima. 1 x DC landed nearby - 5/0/0

Air sightings = 16
Air attacks = 0

-------------------

2 x AK, an AP, an AO and 2 x DD arrive in theatre tomorrow.

Speedysteve -> 15th January 1944 (10/22/2006 11:01:20 AM)

Hi all,

Well Moulmein is certainly an Anzio IMO. Further recon north of the river now puts enemy troop number at 96,000! As such I cannot risk a shock attack against them and the ARM units + Bde's have been recalled to the defensive perimeter of Moulmein. I feel confident on holding moulmein but I am going to start constructing defences straight away.

It is a shame to in effect see this operation end in a poor way. At the very least it's been stalled. My next plan is this to try to force Mandalay. Enemy AV levels have fallen to 4100 level and mine have risen to about 3950. I will try even heavier bombing of Mandalay now from all angles.

I also plan to take Andaman Island with the newly arriving Indian Division before moving that into Burma.

Supplies and fuel still unloading at Moulmein.

------------------

3 x BB shelled Tavoy today and despite recon with recon planes results were poor - 380 enemy men hit and a few airfield hits....no planes destroyed.

------------------

Yokosuka positions at Koepang were hit hard again. My invasion forces will set off tomorrow from Darwin.

------------------

Wake was welcomed again today by BB WeeVee and Nevada. DD O-Bannon struck a mine on the way in - 49/45/7.

CVE's also hit the airfields. The main body will arrive tomorrow. Troops still embarking at Midway.

-------------------

SS I-172 was detected and despatched by DD Clark and DD Tucker 360 miels east of Wake.

Air sightings 14
Air attacks = 0

-------------------

An AK arrives in theatre tomorrow.

Speedysteve -> 16th January 1944 (10/22/2006 12:16:21 PM)

Hi all,

An 'interesting' day in Burma.....Faber moved 2 x Divisions and an ENG Rgt across the river to shock attack Moulmein. They were decimated. Over 9000 enemies were reported dead of captured along with 124 guns and 11 vehicles. In return I lost 154 men.

Excellent. I am very tempted to attack back across the river since Intel/recon estimates this is 1/2 his strength on the northern flank. Either way the men will attack tomorrow to rout the Japanese defenders languishing after their failed assault yesterday.

Screenshot below...........

-----------------

Wake was hit very hard again by my CV's and a BB Division. 12 supply depots were hit. Hard to imagine what could be left alive down there.

We now move into the final preparatory phase with my CV fliers ordered to attack known enemy ground unit positions.

All troops should be embarked within 2 days for move out to Wake.

-----------------

SS Sculpin avoided 4 x MSW 60 miles SE of Tarakan.

SS Billfish capped off a successful patrol by damaging AP Minto Maru with a torpedo 60 miles SE of Saigon. 2 x PC and a DD hunted her and dropped 10's of DC's - 1 hit, 3 near miss - 13/7/0. She's to return to Darwin for R & R. Her patrol record:

October/November - patrolled unsuccessfully off Hainan. Moved to Saigon region.
12th December 1943 - sank AK Hamburg Maru with 2 x torpedo.
13th December 1943 - damaged AK France Maru with a torpedo.
14th December 1943 - sank AK Dakar Maru with 2 x torpedo.
22nd December 1943 - evaded 3 x ASW vessels.
25th December 1943 - damaged troop laden AP Genkai Maru with 2 x torpedo.
30th December 1943 - sank PG Shinko Maru #1 with 2 x torpedo.
16th January 1944 - damaged AP Minto Maru wit ha torpedo.

------------------

BB Iowa, 2 x AK, an TK, an LCI and a DE arrive in theatre tomorrow.

Iowa and New Jersey will form a new SC TF and will move to PH for future operations. They will not be uncovered to the enemy for Wake.

Speedysteve -> 17th January 1944 (10/22/2006 3:41:26 PM)

Hi all,

The Japanese elements near Moulmein were routed, as expected today, they hurried back towards Rangoon leaving a further 100o dead behind and 24 guns. I lost 400 men dead and wounded in this operation.

I am very tempted to follow him but recon still estimates 85000 men are behind the river. Too much to risk for this.

I have decided I will continue bombing him men beyond the river and at Mandalay.

I will try to attack Mandalay at some point to see how dug in he really is.

When the Indian Division arrives at Karachi she will take Andaman and then move into Moulmein. Maybe then I will advance from there.

The RN bombarded Tavoy again causing 300+ enemy casualties. They will do this for a bit longer and then move to Andaman Island, covered by my CV's

----------------------

400 more men and 4 more supply depots were hit at Wake by a BB division.

All men should be aboard their ships tomorrow. We then move out for Wake.....again!

----------------------

4th USMC Para elements parachuted down on the central Timor base of Dili. It was suspected to be empty of the enemy and it was. Communications were stablished with the locals and Transports will land at the runway to pick up the Para's tomorrow. We have secured the place and left the locals in charge for now.

Just the west part of Timor (Koepang) remains to be liberated.

-----------------------

SS Swordfish hit AK Ryoka Maru with 1 of her last 4 torpeodes 60 miles E of Balikpapan leaving her burning fiercely.

Air sightings = 12
Air attacks = 0

-----------------------

BB Iowa, BB New Jersey, CL Biloxi and 15 x Fletcher class DD's will leave San Fran tomorrow bound for PH.

5 x AK and a DE arrive in theatre tomorrow.

Hi all,

I can't keep this from you any longer. I have been planning a secret operation ever since Moulmein was taken and Faber reacted as he did. I now present to you Operation Bustard (since that's what I feel I am going to be to Faber[;)]):

"Operation Bustard will involve the invasion and capture of the Burmese Capitol Rangoon."

You may ask where I have the forces for this. I have been holding some back despite the Moulmein invasion. My forces will gather at Chandpur before safely moving down the coast towards Rangoon. Due to Moulmein being mine I control the air in the region.

Forces allocated for this:

23rd Indian Division
26th Indian Division
23rd Chindit Brigade
50th Indian Para Brigade
16th Indian Brigade
+ HQ's
+ Engineers
+ BF's
+ supply and fuel.

I'm quite happy with this little ruse[;)]

Intel indicates 2 units at Rangoon. I have deliberately not reconned it as yet to keep Faber unawares.

Im hoping to get the place and then he'll be in trouble IMO since his forces north of Moulmein either retreat or they will be cut-off but if they do then Moulmein is unleashed. Either way i'm hoping Mandalay is a gonner and the IJA troops with it[:)]

----------------------

SS Darter evaded 4 x ASW craft NW of Okinawa on her return to Darwin. She was later lightly damaged by a Sally bomb.

SS Templar performed fantastically for her first combat. Patrolling in the vital waters 180 miles east of Palembang she encountered an oil convoy. She hit not 1 but 2 AO's during the day! Both AO Shiriya and AO Ashizuri were hit with 2 torpedoes. Both. carrying oil, were left blazing and Ashizuri was seen breaking up. She evaded the escorts. Well done lads[:)]

Air sightings = 13
Air attacks = 2
Air attacks = 1 - SS Darter by a Sally bomb - 20/0/0

-------------------

The main Base Force on Wake was attacked by almost 600 CV based planes! Almost 300 men and 4 guns were reported lost.

All ships have been assembled and 346 ships divided into 5 TF's are to leave Midway tomorrow to invade Wake. I WILL RETURN[;)]

--------------------

Koepang was invaded today. Happily my TF was not spotted by the enemy until the first AK hit a mine entering Koepang harbour. Mine's did hit 8 x AK. Only 1 of which (carrying supplies) will sink. 1/2 the troops are ashore and the weary Yokosuka men are not expected to resist too much tomorrow. Then Timor will all be mine[:)]

--------------------

1 x LSV, and LCI and a DD arrive in theatre tomorrow as does a Mossie PR Squadron at Darwin (very helpful).

Hi all,

Hi T- Mean?!? He started it....this is justice[;)]

-------------------

Burma was quietish today with only air raids on IJA Troops positions around Mandalay.

-------------------

SS Templer continued her sterling work by sinking the empty AP Meizan Maru with 2 torpeodes 180 miles east of Palembang. That's 2 x AO and an AP in 2 days! She is out of torpedoes and is returning to Columbo. SS Tally Ho is en route to replace her.

SS Angler evaded convoy escorts 180 miles WNW od Tori Shima.

SS Jack hit the FUEL laden AK Tsurushima Maru with a torpedo 180 miles ENE of Tori Shima leaving her burning.

Air sightings = 13
Air attacks = 1

-----------------------

Koepang - more mine hits on 7 x AK. 1 of them sank today. Recon has detected a probable SC Tf approaching (screenshot attached). As such we are halting the unloading and moving back to Darwin - 98& of troops are ashore as are enoguh supply for 2 weeks.

The men surprisngly found a network of defences throughout the town. They overcame them fairly easily but have not quite secured the base yet. They will tomorrow:

Ground combat at Koepang

Allied Shock attack

Attacking force 6047 troops, 54 guns, 73 vehicles, Assault Value = 150

Defending force 821 troops, 2 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 22

Allied max assault: 174 - adjusted assault: 80

Japanese max defense: 11 - adjusted defense: 13

Allied assault odds: 6 to 1 (fort level 6)

Allied Assault reduces fortifications to 0

Japanese ground losses:
89 casualties reported
Guns lost 1

Allied ground losses:
22 casualties reported
Guns lost 1

-------------------

An AGC, AK, MSW and a DD arrive in theatre tomorrow as does 11th Australian Division in Sydney.

Count me as potentially impressed. Rangoon is of course a rich prize, and you'll be taking it over a year ahead of the historic date --IF you take it. The Penguin has shown a remarkable ability to move troops to where they're needed with remarkable speed for a flightless bird.

Speedysteve -> 20th January 1944 (10/23/2006 12:25:13 AM)

Hi all,

Hi Capt. Agreed Faber does seem to re-deploy quickly. I also have found it amazing guess work/intuition on his part sometimes. I have thought in the past if someone has tipped him off but that may be paranoia[;)]

---------------

Wake is nearing it's time. If this was RL I could only imagine the hell the Japanese would've been through....today 62nd NGU received a hammering losing 382 men and 8 guns.

Probably about 3-4 days before the transports are nearing Wake.

---------------

Faber pulled a good move near Koepang. I avoided his SC TF since my fleet was moving back to Darwin but a CV TF was present too! Only a small one. Probably a couple of CV's. They attacked and hit 6-7 ships. 2 x AK sank outright and 2 more will probably sink.

Koepang is mine though and with it the whole of Timor[:)]

The US Troops and Aussie Tankers resumed their advance at first light and found the enemy demoralised. A few cursory shots from the tankers forced over 800 Japanese to surrender. The place was taken intact along with 21000 supplies.

--------------

Air sightings = 13
Air attacks =3
Air hits = 1 - SS Haddock near Amboina. Minor damage.

--------------

An AK will arrive in theatre tomorrow.

Speedysteve -> 21st January 1944 (10/23/2006 8:35:52 PM)

Hi all,

The first TF's should arrive at Chandpur tomorrow. We then begin embarking troops for Rangoon.

Mandalay was hit hard again today.

Almost down to 4000 AV now for the Japanese and it's falling:

Ground combat at Mandalay

Allied Bombardment attack

Attacking force 159462 troops, 1425 guns, 1376 vehicles, Assault Value = 3965

Defending force 206756 troops, 787 guns, 581 vehicles, Assault Value = 4114

Japanese ground losses:
246 casualties reported
Guns lost 3

-------------------

Wake was bombarded in the night by a BB divisions and the 63rd NGU received 400+ casualties and 5 guns from CV's during the day.

I am intrigued to see what resistance they put up to the landings when they occur in a few days time.

Air sightings = 12
Air attacks = 0
