I'm thinking that would take too long to set up, and Speedy needs to keep the initiative...

Speedysteve -> 25th January 1944 (10/25/2006 10:49:38 PM)

Hi all,

Hi guys thanks for the comments. Appreciated.

Mike - Yes I intend on doing that. I'll detail preparations for my plans below.

Nik - wow. You took PM in the height of your power. I wish I was you[8|][:'(][;)]

Elladan - good to see you. China is 100% stable. I control the magic quadrant (sorry guys work pun here referring to Gartner Report on WAN Optimization - which we are top I must say[;)]). I'm totally safe in Chungking, Kunming, Chengtu and Yunan. I have Spits/P38's covering all bases and I exceed Faber's AV on the ground by 1/3. Supply is growing steadily due to Burma Road and i'm now repairing some of the resource/HI that Faber damaged during air attacks.

I NEVER forsee a ground offensive but maybe an air campaign later on. Food for thought. Hmm. Thanks.

Northern route - Problem here is that Faber heavily reinforced this route when I feigned to go there in late 42/early 43. Maybe I will move here a little when encroaching past the Mariana's later on in 44. I still have several RCT's in the region.

Niceguy - Agreed. I'm tired of Atolls........

Rob - Mandalay is a stalemate as long as he is in supply and I can't attrite his forces fast enough.

Capt. - as mentioned northern route is pretty fortified. As T says it would take too much time for a massive effort.

-------------------

Today was a day of detailed checking of my force disposition and operational planning.

Burma:

Air raids on Mandalay/IJA troop positions.

Recon of Rangoon indicates 7 units - 41,000 men. Psychic Faber![8|] Forget it. Operation Bustard is not going for Rangoon now. I am sorry guys but I am wary of Faber knowing my true intentions. I am now looking at alternatives for my troops at Chandpur. I will explain more in due course.

-------------------

SRA:

Timor is growing every day. Tomorrow Lautem will have 4 airfields.

4th USMC Para's will drop on Kai Island nearing Amboina.

Recon Mossies will scour the entire area. I will move further here soon.

-------------------

CentPac:

Further forces landed at Wake. An AK sank there due to Mine damage. Massive assaults by me throughout the day led to 1500 casualties vs 1000 Japanese. However weak remnants of: 2 x BF, 1 x CD and 1 x Eng. Bn tried to surrender. They were mowed down.

We rest tomorrow and then deliberately attack.

CV's and SC TF's heading back to PH for R & R.

2 x B24J BG flew from Cooktown to Apamama today in preparation to subjugate Eniwetok. 1 x B24 BG is training at PH for deployment to the Marshalls also.

Just a quick glance at LCU's. 9 x Division + ARM, ENG + RCT are at PH now ready to rock and roll. Preparing for the next objective - the Marshalls (location kept for security).

I have massive forces available. It's incredible being Allies in 1944. I have liberally allocated RCT's, ARM, ART, ENG across the Marshalls, S Pacific, N Pacific etc and I still have 2 x Division, 2 x RCT and 4 x ARM units at San Francisco awaiting deployment! + gazillions of SeeBee units.

I receive 1st USA Art. Group tomorrow. More and more goodies are coming online.

---------------------

Air sightings = 18
Air attacks = 1

1 x MSW and an APD arrive in theatre tomorrow.

Elladan -> RE: 25th January 1944 (10/25/2006 11:32:15 PM)

In Central Pacific area I would seriously consider striking directly at Marianas. It's not so far from Wake and with your air and naval supremacy you should be able to ensure safe route there. Of course Marianas will be heavily defended by Penguin forces, but that what you have this bunch of troops for. Let them fight, at least you will not have to assault atolls. And when you conquer 1-2 bases in Marianas there will be only Iwo and Okinawa between you and mainland Japan. What do you think about this?
The northern route can be used as a diversion, only to pull some more japanese troops and hopefully stretch their defense even more.
Timor offers a lot of juicy targets ahead. Balikpapan, Brunei, Java, Palembang, Phillipines, just name them. With abundance of good airfields this is a paradise for heavy bombers.
Burma. If you can't breakthrough frontally why don't flank him? And if your flanking maneuver wasn't good enough flank him deeper :) Make Burma big POW camp, you don't need those bases much.

Just my 0.02$. And thanks to Speedy (and Fabertong too) for this great AAR. One of my favourites.

Speedysteve -> 26th January 1944 (10/25/2006 11:54:11 PM)

Hi all,

Hi Elladan - Many thanks. Excellent analysis and on my mind too. As I say I won't disclose any specific targets but your thinking is 100% along my lines with regard to Burma and CentPac.

In Burma I am currently reconning every coastal base down Malaya and Sumatra with Mossies from Akyab. There is a reason for this............

Timor - exactly. I have decided on moving towards Java. To link up with SEAC.

Next step will be Maumere (sp?).

Kai Island was taken today (near Amboina) since it offers a step in that direction if needed.

CentPac - As I say 100% agree. Eniwetok will start to be pounded over next 3-5 days. Once neutralised it will stay so allowing safeish passage from Wake to Mariana's.

I already have the LCU's IMO. 9 x Division + support is massive against a non-Atoll base. I just need to rest my ships and assemble the Landing Craft.

Thanks again. A helpful analysis and good to know i'm not the only one thinking it [:)]

-----------------

1 x BB Division bombarded Tavoy last night (450 casualties). The other bombarded Rangoon - 6 x AK hit in port. 600+ casualties + supply hits. It all adds up.

-----------------

SS Finback capsized AK Syunsei Maru with 3 torpedo hits 360 miles NW of Palau.

Air sightings = 13
Air attacks = 0

----------------

More unloaded at Wake as my naval forces head back to PH.

----------------

Lautem now has 4 operational airfields. A Spitfire VIII Squadron flew in today and a B25J BG flys in tomorrow.

Supplies still unloading at Koepang.

25th USA Division at Darwin now + USMC Raiders + BF's.

----------------

3 x AK, an LST and a MSW arrive in theatre tomorrow as does a PV-1 Squadron.

Speedysteve -> 27th January 1944 (10/26/2006 11:25:15 PM)

Hi all,

Today was one of the quietest for a while.

Not bad on the sub front though:

SS Guavina has only recently arrived on station north of Luzon. Today she located and attacked a freighter convoy. She hit 2 freighters. AK Ehime Maru was heavily damaged by a torpedo. Escaping the escorts she re-aligned and damaged AK Malta Maru with another torpedo. The escorts dropepd DC's innefectively.

SS Thresher avoided 5 x MSW 60 miles SE of Soerabaja. DC's were dropped but far off target.

SS Seal (famous submarine from the Banjamrasin area) moderately damaged TK Kuremente Maru with a torpedo NE of Taytay. The heavy PC/MSW/DD escort dropepd DC's everywhere but none near. A heavy escort here. Clearly Faber is re-organising key convoys with heavy escort. Makes sense

Air sightings = 13
Air attacks = 0

---------------------

Bombing from the air and ground in Burma and the Marshalls.

BB divisions will bombard Rangoon and Tavoy from Moulmein tomorrow.

---------------------

After a day's rest Allied forces on Wake will conduct extensive bombardments of the remaining enemy outposts tomorrow.

---------------------

An AK, LCI(G), SS, DE and DD arrive in theatre tomorrow.

Speedysteve -> 28th January 1944 (10/27/2006 1:00:22 AM)

Hi all,

Hi Ron - LOL. Probably about 2 turns a day during the week and 3-4 at weekends. It all depends on our RL situation. This game is my priority out of my 6 x WiTP games since it was one of my earliest starters.

Mike - shuddup dumass. Go berate a Private or something for farting [:'(]

T - no comment[;)]

--------------

BB's hit both Rangoon and Tavoy during the night causing a total of 530 casualties.

Heavy bombing throughout he day in Burma. 4 x LCU are nearing Pagan around Mandalay's flanks. Faber has moved a strong unit out from Mandalay to reinforce the 2 at Pagan. Doesn't surprise me. It all helps though in force dispersal.

Recon indicates 5 units at Georgetown = 14000 men and 45 guns. Noted for the future.

--------------

A B25J BG flew into Lautem today.

Recon indicates 4 untis at Amboina - 12000 men.

--------------

Massive bombardments took place at Wake on some exposed Japanese postions causing a reported 372 casualties of 4752 remaining men..........both BB divisions are ordered to bombard Rangoon tomorrow.

--------------

SS Grunion had a fun last da yon her patrol. She decided to attack an ASW Tf not once but twice! Firstly 1 torpedo blew up PC CH30 60 miles east of Tarakan. She then fired 6 torpedoes at DD Akikaze which missed. DC's were dropped. 2 x near miss - 11/0/0. Returning to Darwin to re-arm

Air sightings = 21
Air attacks = 3
Air hits = 1 - Lancetfish 180 miles west of Saigon - 29/3/0.

--------------

BC Renown, an AK, DE and a DD arrive in theatre tomorrow.

Terminus -> RE: 28th January 1944 (10/27/2006 1:04:28 AM)

No taking Amboina with para-marines then...[;)]

Mike Solli -> RE: 28th January 1944 (10/27/2006 3:33:55 AM)

Hey Speedy, do you have a rule against invading non-base hexes in this game?

Speedysteve -> 29th January 1944 (10/27/2006 9:44:58 PM)

Hi all,

Hi T- no chance. Maybe other bases though. The defence does look patchwork in the SRA.

Hi Mike - no rule but I don't employ them. A personal rule I guess you could say.

------------------

Well well. SS Thresher located CV Hiyo in the early hours of the morning 60 miles SE of Soerabaya. 1 of 4 torpedoes hit causing no visible damage. The escorts launched many DC's 2 of which hit - 47/92/0

SS Spearfish missed AV Sanyo Maru with 4 torpedoes 60 miles east of Batavia.

SS Lapon was attacked by 4 x ASW vessels 60 miles NE of Batavia. 2 x near miss and 1 x hit achieved - 20/22/0.

Air sightings = 14
Air attacks = 0

------------------

Rangoon was bombarded by 6 x BB throughout the night causing 800 casualties and hitting 6 x AK docked in port.

Recon still scouring up and down Malaya and Sumatra.

Supplies still rushing ashore at Koepang. Lautem slowly building.

I have quite a decent force at Darwin now - 3 x Divisions + several ARM/ENG Bn's.

------------------

Bombardments at Wake caused a further 180 casualties today. Down to an estimated 4000 enemy troops left. Deliberate attacks are ordered for tomorrow.

------------------

3 x AK and a DD arrive in theatre tomorrow.

Speedysteve -> 30th January 1944 (10/28/2006 10:35:20 AM)

Hi all,

SS S-27 missed a golden opportunity. She didn't attack ML Hoko that sailed right by. This took place 300 miles east of Pagan.

SS Rock was attacked by several PC convoy escorts 480 miles west of Tori Shima. 3 x near miss DC's - 12/5/0.

SS Saury hit the large troop laden transport Rakuyo Maru with a torpedo 240 miles south of Truk.

Good news. TK Kuremente Maru, hit by SS Seal a few days ago, was reported sunk at Manila today.

Air sightings = 14
Air attacks = 1

---------------------

Rangoon was smacked again by 2 x BB Divisions. Little CD return fire. As such i'm experimenting by allowing some DD's to bombard tomorrow. Several AK's hit in port.

AK Kozan Maru was reported sunk.

4 x LCU's are marching on Pagan now. 40 miles left to go. 2 x IJA unit in Pagan with a further division approaching. I'm not confident of success but it will tie down more IJA troops.

---------------------

Bad weather across the theatre affected many air raids.

---------------------

Wake Island is clear of Japanese troops! The final ragged bunch were mowed down today. A further 2000 enemy have gone for good.

Excellent. Most of the troops are in decent condition - 75/100. They will rest and prepare for their future mission - the Mariana's.

Most of my CV/SC TF's have reached PH now and are resting, repairing and upgrading. Boy do they need it. Most Capitol ships are at 5-20 SYS.

castor troy -> RE: 30th January 1944 (10/28/2006 1:48:16 PM)

Be aware of letting your DDs bombard. I did that a couple of times when I was sure there wouldn´t be any more counter fire but I think twice I was hit so hard (a couple of DDs sank outright) that I´m doing it anymore. CD fire is a mistery.

Speedysteve -> 31st January 1944 (10/29/2006 9:01:01 PM)

Hi all,

Hi Castor - Too true. I think he genuinely has few guns at Rangoon though. Today's bombardment by DD's proved that....no damage sustained thankfully[:)]

-----------------

It's certainly a bit strange with things being relatively quiet at present.

CentPac = forces resting at PH and Wake in preparation for the next blow.

SRA - Waiting for the AK's to finish unloading supples at Koepang, then an Aviation Rgt will be moved in, planes flown in and then we go for Maumere.

Burma - the most active theatre now with multiple axis of attack - at Mandalay, stronghold at Moulmein, advancing in Pagan with 2 x Division, 2 x Brigade, Chinese advancing towards Lashio from Yunan with 4 x Corps + HQ's - 120 miles to go

------------------

Rangoon was successfully hit by 2 x SC TF's overnight causing 400+ casualties, 9 guns and 5 x AK's hit.

Recon is moving down Malaya. I think I may have found my next invasion target....details to be confirmed and will follow soon. Wherever I decide I will await 7th Indian Division arrival at Chandpur from Karachi.

------------------

SS Picuda was hunted by 5 x ASW vessels 300 miles NW of Pagan. PC Tsushima located her and achieved 1 x hit (A/S Mortar) and 2 x near miss - 12/58/0. Returning to Wake Island (new nearer sub base[:)])

SS Triton located a Tanker convoy and succeeded in hitting the oil laden TK Ryuei Maru with a torpedo 60 miles NW of Brunei leaving her heavily burning. The escorts failed to locate her.

SS Whale left AK Uzan Maru listing badly with a torpedo hit on the bow 120 miles WNW of Tori Shima. 4 x near miss DC's- 12/0/0

SS Skipjack fired her last 4 torpedoes at the troop laden large transport Terukuni Maru 60 miles east of Balikpapan. 2 hit home leaving her heavily damaged. Being so near to port though i'm sure she'll unload. 1 x hit DC - 22/23/0.

SS Spearfish missed AK Tien Maru with 4 torpeodes 60 miles east of Batavia.

Air sightings = 14
Air attacks = 0

---------------------

2 x AK, and LSI(G), DD and CA Pittsburgh arrive in theatre tomorrow.

Speedysteve -> End of January.......... (10/29/2006 9:25:45 PM)

Hi all,

Points:

Japanese: +767
Allied: +2084

Bases:

Japanese: - 6 bases (+19 points)
Allied: + 6 bases (+357 points)

Planes:

Allies lost: 488
Japanese lost: 1056

Troops:

Allies lost: 140 points
Japanese lost: 437 points

Ships:

Allies lost: 17 ships - 120 points. All AK, MSW, LST from Wake/Timor.
Japanese lost: 28 ships - 223 points. IIRC only one of these was lost to naval gunfire at Rangoon + 1-2 IJN SS = 24-25 ships sunk by submarines this month. N.B. CVL Chiyoda is still NOT appearing in sunk ships list.

---------------------

Thoughts = a pretty decent month points wise overall. Happy enough with my subs. A few more are getting damaged by ASW but I have enough coming on board to gradually increase numbers on deployment.

About 1/2 of my points increase was due to Japanese plane loss. A large chuink of them over Moulmein.

Next month will see the main focus on SRA and Burma.
