Hope you continue Speedy , your use of subs is inspirational, I just can't copy your success however.

Speedysteve -> 9th April 1944 (12/3/2006 10:47:43 PM)

Hi all,

Hi Rob - thanks buddy[:)] I have e-mailed Faber about this and it's down to him now. If he wishes to concede and we can start over. It's up to him.

I personally would like to finish this if for nothing other than the sheer amount of time and effort expended on the game and this AAR............

------------------

More massed bombing in Burma. The Japanese at Pagan are down to almost 650 AV now...........

More men have reached the last 60 miles of trail north of Rangoon. We await the remaining men...........should be there by 3 days time.

The last remnants of 100th Chinese Corps should be at Myitkyina tomororw. Then we march on Rangoon to reinforce the Allies............

-------------------

Supplies flowing ashore at Koepang and Maumere. Once unloaded we begin the bombing campaign against Balikpapan, Macassar and Kendari.

An enemy convoy was attacked 60 miles north of Macassar by Mitchells and Helldivers from Maumere. 2 x Freighter took a bomb hit.

-------------------

More carnage south of Tokyo. A further 24 x PG, AK and AP were confirmed sunk today. More air attacks:

Speedysteve -> RE: 9th April 1944 (12/3/2006 11:33:41 PM)

Hi all,

I would like your thoughts on this.

Do you think we should continue or re-start with a Mod?

I know most feel the a2a model is too bloody either way. I would like to finish this though but can totally understand Faber's frustration.

I'm even tempted to skip the Mariana's and go straight for Japan. Why waste time in securing islands that were needed to bomb Japan when I can sail right upto it and blast away?[8|][:'(][;)]

Terminus -> RE: 9th April 1944 (12/3/2006 11:54:05 PM)

It would probably not make much of a difference if he got his Kamikazes up and running. Not with that many of your fighters flying, even on only 40% C(r)AP.

Miller -> RE: 9th April 1944 (12/4/2006 12:05:41 AM)

I think when one player ceases to get any fun from the game its time to call it quits.

There is nothing to stop you using your BB's to pound the HI ports into ruin if they are covered by your CVs. Perhaps a rule of max of 500 carrier a/c per hex may make a difference?

I agree completely. From my view in the grandstands I'd like to see this game continue, but Faber seems like a decent guy & if you knew he was miserable with the game, I'm sure that would lessen your enjoyment too. [:(] He's seemed remarkably resilient to me up to this point in time.

Couldn't hurt to try Miller's suggestion, but I'd say it's Faber's call.

Terminus -> RE: 9th April 1944 (12/4/2006 12:20:40 AM)

But all things being equal, this is a game... If both parties aren't having fun, then it's time to stop.

Speedysteve -> RE: 9th April 1944 (12/4/2006 12:36:36 AM)

That's exactly it Ctangus. It's strange. This has been my favourite game of WiTP. It's been tough and every turn has been fun to watch. Fantastic.

Now this has happened. I was just trying to attack Tokyo in a kind of reverse PH scenario. The problem then just grew and grew. I can tell from Faber's mails he is very unhappy.

I see both of us as decent opponents and people and as such I am almost feeling sorry for Faber because of the game engine!

My gut feeling is Faber will never be happy with the game now and as such....curtains......

On the flip side as mentioned i've put so much time and effort into this that to end it seems a waste.

Likely true. But perhaps with a few days break he can come up with new goals for himself in the game & start enjoying it again.

A few months back I lost a game in mid-Jan '42 where I was, for the most part, doing very well. (Also against a decent opponent, but I could tell his heart wasn't in it anymore so I offered him an out.) I decided then that it's the voyage, not the destination that's the most fun in a game this large.

Certainly I didn't have the time invested that you have, so that made it easier for me. But as you said, you've had a lot of fun with this game.

However it turns out I'll continue to quietly read Speedy vs Faber or Speedy vs. Faber II. [:)]

Terminus -> RE: 9th April 1944 (12/4/2006 1:35:02 AM)

Or Speedy vs. One of Speedy's Other Personalities...[:D]

Speedysteve -> 10th April 1944 (12/4/2006 10:18:14 PM)

Hi all,

Well good news. Faber has decided to see this through to the end. It will be tough for him. As such i've decided to do the 'decent' thing and invade the Mariana's as planned rather than go straight for Japan [:)]

--------------

Well the Chinese are ready to march from Myitkyina. All 1600 AV of them.........

Heavy bombing on IJA positions north of Rangoon. The 6th Ind. Bde took especially heavy losses.

--------------

More supplies flowing ashore at Maumere and Koepang in preparation for my bombing campaign.

The enemy TF north of Macassar stayed there for some reason. It was attacked again today:

A small enemy strike was repulsed by my 150 x Hellcat.

We move further away tomorrow since fuel is low. My replenishment AO's are near though.......

A further 4 enemy ships sank around Japan today.

I lost 35 planes to 72 Japanese today.

CVE Saginaw Bay, an AK, LST and a DD arrive in theatre tomorrow.

pauk -> RE: 10th April 1944 (12/4/2006 11:28:06 PM)

hi, i think that Penguinista wouldn't have anything against direct invasion on HI. As a ED tester can you confirm that in this game will be no Uber CAP?[;)]

IIRC the BoB didn't have problems with Uber CAP?

Speedysteve -> 11th April 1944 (12/5/2006 12:05:20 PM)

Hi all,

Hi Pauk - An ED tester?!? Are you asking about how the CAP will be in BTR/BoB?[:)]

-----------------------

Bad weather prevented most air raids in Burma today.

I have assembled the troops north of Rangoon and have ordered them to march the last 60 miles of trail and shock assault the Japanese across the river. Our force levels look pretty even which isn't good but I hope my ground attacks from the air will be the difference.

-----------------------

In the SRA the main focus was on the enemy shipping trying to sneak around Macassar.

Air attacks occured throughout the day from Maumere.

Enemy shipping was heavily hit with no enemy fighters on CAP. In total 4 x AP were confirmed sunk and 4 more heavily damaged. They were carrying troops.

I've attached a screenshot of the area Alfred. I still feel Lombok is a no go for a profitable return. It could easily be covered by air from Raba/Maumere though.

-----------------------

My CV's continue to move eastwards encountering no enemy shipping.

4 x AK sank due to their damage in Japan today.

-----------------------

SS Manta hit 2 x AP 60 miles east of Soerabaja. AP Shinano Maru was damaged by a torpedo in the morning and AP Shinyu Maru was heavily damaged by a torpedo in the atfernoon. She is out of torpedoes now and returning to Darwin. SS Billfish to replace her on station.

SS Drum damaged the oil laden TK Ichiyo Maru with a torpedo 60 miles NW of Brunei.

SS Sunfish evaded 3 x ASW vessels 180 miles SW of Takao.

Air sightings = 18
Air attacks = 4

--------------------------

2 x LCI and an AK arrive in theatre tomorrow

Alfred -> RE: 11th April 1944 (12/5/2006 1:13:41 PM)

Speedy,

I see that Banjarmasin has aircraft stationed there.  It too would need to be "visited" by your bombers if you capture Lombok.

Do you know what task the ships at (and near) Macassar were engaged in?  Are they the AP carrying troops you hit?  If carrying troop reinforcements to Macassar then maybe the Macassar operation will not have surprise.

Are Kendari, Amboina or Bulla lightly held?  I ask because there are strategic possibilities there which should concern the penguin and therefore mask your true intentions of moving on Borneo via Macassar.  Essentially what I am suggesting is that there are benefits if the Allies can capture cheaply a base which opens up strategic possibilities which draw the penguin's attention away from your real objectives.  Bulla for example should have a level 1 AF.  If it is not currently defended a coup de main there allows for stationing of Corsairs and eventual strike with short legged airplanes (plus LCU) at the resource/oil production of Amboina and Sorong.  In time Morotai would also be a target.  These are possibilities which the penguin should not overlook and therefore would encourage him to take strengthening measures for those bases just as he might be doing for Macassar now that you have Maumere and Raba.

Ideally you use your initiative by hitting him where he does not expect attack and then whilst he is off balance and still responding/readjusting to that hit, you hit him elsewhere again with surprise.  What concerns me is that the Macassar operation by itself may be too obvious and that the penguin can use his interior lines to respond effectively to singular massive Allied assaults.  If he does not know where the next blow will fall and is then surprised by multiple co-ordinated blows (or at least the threat of) then the advantage of operating on interior lines can be negated.

Alfred

You know he can't talk about that...

Speedysteve -> 12th April 1944 (12/6/2006 5:12:44 PM)

Hi all,

Hi Alfred - once more. Very interesting. The AP's hit near Macassar were carrying troops. I believe a lot of the convoy was heavily hit though. Kendari has about 20,000 troops according to recon. I know it has a division there from SigInt. Amboina has 2nd Amphibious Bde. Bulla is empty as is Babo. This is interesting Alfred. Hmm. Bulla and Babo......

Pauk - Pffft.....[:'(]

--------------------------

Firstly for today. Pauk [:'(]

SS Guitarro finished her patrol today by blowing up MSW Banshu Maru 52 with 2 torpedoes 60 miles east of Batavia. Pauk you think subs don't increase in Exp? Check out the attachment. As recorded a month ago SS Guitarro left Darwin at 73/73. She is now at 74/75 after this successful patrol[:)]

SS Sunfish was attacked by convoy escorts 240 miles WSW of Takao. 9 x DC near miss - 36/4/0.

SS Guavina missed MSW W.19 180 miles east of Balikpapan.

SS Sawfish sank the already damaged AP Gosei Maru with a torpedo 120 miles north of Macassar.

SS Spearfish missed AK Syogen Maru with 4 torpedoes 120 miles east of Tarakan.

SS Tantalus heavily damaged DD Hokaze with a torpedo 120 miles NE of Palembang. The escorts landed 1 x DC near miss - 4/0/0.

A couple of more attacks by LBA from Maumere on the fleeing convoy north of Macassar. AP Shoho Maru and AP Imizu Maru were confirmed sunk

--------------------

Air attacks throughout the Marshalls.

CV's will meet the AO's tomorrow to refuel 600 miles NE of Marcus Island.

Speedysteve -> 13th April 1944 (12/6/2006 11:35:47 PM)

Hi all,

Burma is going to be interesting soon.............

The main Chinese force will be at Mandalay tomorrow.

Pagan is weakening again and I have ordered a deliberate attack for tomorrow.

My men are 54 miles from the IJA positions north of Rangoon.

It is nearing the time to invase Rangoon aswell. Recon detects an IJA Divisions + another unti there. I will land soon with the African Bde and 100's of tanks........if anything else the key is to tie down as much as I cna and stretch Faber too thin until he breaks in Burma.

Massive bombing today by LBA from Dacca, Calcutta, Akyab, Imphal and Moulmein. Enemy LCU's are suffering.

-------------------

Quiet in the SRA. Another AP sank due to bomb damage north of Macassar.

Also Alfred. You're right Bali isn't an Atoll!

Anyway supplies continue to flow ashore at Maumere and Koepang.

I can't wait for my CVE's to reach the area to give me some mobile air power (they are currently nearing the Marshalls).

2 x AK sank in Japan today.
---------------------

My CV's have refuelled well NE of Marcus Island. They will rest a day and move past Marcus Island (to smash it) on the way back to PH.

An AK TF trying to sneak in and out of Kwajalein was attacked by SB2C's from Wotje today. The troop carrying AK Tekkai Maru was hit by 2 bombs leaving her heavily damaged.

---------------------

No Submarine attacks today.

TK Kyoku Maru was confirmed sunk at Aparri today.

Air sightings = 19
Air attacks = 2

---------------------

3 x AK, SS Stoic, SS Scabbardfish and an MSW arrive in theatre tomorrow.

Alfred -> RE: 13th April 1944 (12/7/2006 10:06:01 AM)

Speedy,

With 20,000 troops, Kendari is obviously not a candidate for a coup de main.  But undefended Bulla and Babo are candidates.  If you are thinking about moving on those two, do not overlook Kai Island which IIRC can build up to a level 5 AF whereas Bulla and Babo are max level 4 AF.

You seem to be very quiet on the SoPac front.  Have you thought about reassigning some of its plentiful Seabee/EAB units to operations around Bulla/Babo/Kai, specifically to quickly build up airfields.  Bulla is particularly valuable because it can provide overland supply to LCU investing Amboina.  Whilst not ideal, you can even consider a slow overland march of LCU (under LRCAP) from Bulla to Amboina to avoid landing casualties/disruption and exposing your ships to flying penguins (sic) at a time when you do not have carrier air power in the area.

Alfred

Speedysteve -> 14th April 1944 (12/7/2006 12:49:00 PM)

Hi all,

Hi Alfred - I am now seriosuly considering a little deployment to the SE SRA. For the simple reason as you say I have ample ENG/BF/Corsair squadrons and most imortantly little Raider/Para units....perfect.

-------------------

Few air raids were launched in Burma which didn't help my failed attack at Pagan:

Ground combat at Pagan

Allied Deliberate attack

Attacking force 34596 troops, 325 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 834

Defending force 33771 troops, 62 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 639

Allied max assault: 838 - adjusted assault: 272

Japanese max defense: 468 - adjusted defense: 494

Allied assault odds: 0 to 1 (fort level 7)

Japanese ground losses:
303 casualties reported
Guns lost 4

Allied ground losses:
692 casualties reported
Guns lost 25

Mainly disrupted troops but will take time to recover before attacking again. In the meantime Pagan's defenders will be withered down further.

------------------

A damaged Allied AK in the SRA.

A 500,000 tonne supply convoy is forming up in San Francisco. As Andy Mac says the biggest drain on the Allies in 44/45 is supply..........especially when employing heavy bombers.

------------------

Quite a few ASW TF's were around today. Mainly evaded. I have decided to fight back and tomorrow i'm keeping my Submarine's on station to try and fight back!

SS S-18 was attacked by 4 x DD 240 miles east of Aomori. 1 x DC hit, 2 x near miss - 32/23/0. Returning to Attu Island for repairs.

SS Dace avoided 5 x ASW ships 120 miles north of Brunei.

SS Guavina evaded 5 x ASW craft 180 miles east of Balikpapan.

SS Sturdy evaded 4 x ASW craft 60 mils SW of Singapore.

Speedysteve -> 16th April 1944 (12/7/2006 6:57:50 PM)

Hi all,

More bombing in Burma as all ARM elements are aboard AK's. An invasion TF has been formed including 2 x BB....we will not move out just yet. I want to wait until my men are nearer to approaching the Rangoon line from the north.............

----------------------

In the SRA P38's shot down 3 x Topsy over Macassar. We continue on patrol there.

I will start to bomb from Koeepang and Maumere over the next 3-4 days. A group of B29's has arrived to replace B24J's at Koepang.

Alfred -> RE: 16th April 1944 (12/8/2006 10:13:23 AM)

Speedy,

The loss of 3 Topsy over Macassar strongly suggests to me that the penguin is reinforcing that base with air ferried troops/supplies.  If so you are not going to achieve surprise there as your timetable still requires about 2 months before you invade Macassar, thereby giving him plenty of time to organise his defence.  Therefore I would definitely be looking at other operations to bypass that stronghold whilst still maintaining the threat against Macassar and keeping up the air offensive.  Bulla and Babo look good, particularly as the latter can become a level 5 AF and not the level 4 previously stated.

Alfred

Speedysteve -> 17th April 1944 (12/8/2006 11:23:14 AM)

Hi all,

Hi Alfred - Too tue. I'm keeping my options open...........I will soon have the air, land AND sea force to do what I would like to do.

------------------

Today was a relatively quiet day....the calm before the storm in Burma.

bombing on IJA troops at Mandalay and on positions north of Rangoon.

I am going to invade Rangoon tomororw with the African Bde + 8 x ARM units. I will also follow up with a division or so from Moulmein..........

-------------------

A further 4 x Topsy and a Tabby were shot down by P38J's over Macassar.

-------------------

Heavy bombing throughout the Marshalls.

-------------------

SS Burrfish evaded 5 x DD 120 miles SE of Shanghai.

Air sightings = 12
Air attacks = 0

--------------------

4 x AK will arrive in theatre tomorrow.

Speedysteve -> 18th April 1944 (12/8/2006 1:55:41 PM)

Hi all,

Rangoon has been invaded! I'm actually quite happy with it. Only 1/3 of my troops are ashore and already we're at even force levels:

Ground combat at Rangoon

Japanese Bombardment attack

Attacking force 17703 troops, 154 guns, 3 vehicles, Assault Value = 308

Defending force 6103 troops, 33 guns, 249 vehicles, Assault Value = 299

Allied ground losses:
14 casualties reported
Guns lost 2

I am going to keep on smashing 4th IJA Division with airpower from Moulmein. Knowing Faber troops will somehow magically appear to reinforce Rangoon soon. As such I want to try and take it quickly....if I can. I have decided against moving a Division from Moulmein since I can't afford to leave this sector too weak.

More massed bombing throughout Burma.

--------------------

3 x Tabby were shot down by P38J's over Macassar today.

The bombing campaign will start tomorrow. PB4Y's, B24J's and B29's will fly from Koepang against Balikpapan's oilfields. P38J's will fly escort from Maumere.

B25J's will fly from Maumere to bomb Macassar. Corsairs will escort them.

---------------------

SS Bowfin heavily damaged the troop laden AP Buyo Maru with a torpedo 240 miles east of Pagan.

SS Dace sank PC Takunan Maru 5 with 2 torpedoes 60 miles NW of Brunei.

Air sightings = 14
Air attacks = 0

-----------------------

BB Richelieu, an AK and a LST arrive in theatre tomorrow.

Speedysteve -> 19th April 1944 (12/8/2006 4:41:34 PM)

Hi all,

Well the Armour is taking longer than expected to 'disemark' from the AK's at Rangoon. A further Japanese unit has been detected by recon approaching Rangoon..........

I may in the end evac Rangoon if Faber puts a lot of force towards me.

We'll see. LBA from Moulmein pounded 4th Division's positions at Rangoon today.

Further Chinese units are being transported by air from Lashio to Myitkyina for the march to Mandalay.

---------------------

The raid on Balikpapan was a partial success. The Heavies took off on schedule from Koepang but the P38J's were socked in at Maumere. 52 enemy fighters were on CAP to meet my 133 Heavies. My gunners did well though in shooting down 3 fighters for the loss of 13 bombers. Good news is that 1/2 of the oil production was disabled today.

Faber will probably bring in further fighters tomorrow. As such I will rest the bombers and sweep with the P38J's from Maumere.

----------------------

My CV's are about 5 days out of PH.

----------------------

SS Spearfish heavily damaged AK Kano Maru with 2 torpedoes 120 miles east of Tarakan. The escorts failed to locate her.

SS Sawfish was attacked by 5 x ASW vessels 120 miles north of Macassar. 3 x DC near miss - 10/2/0.

Air sightings = 16
Air attacks = 2

------------------------

SS Razorback and an LCI arrive in theatre tomorrow.

Speedysteve -> 20th April 1944 (12/9/2006 1:27:54 AM)

Hi all,

Well Faber is bringing troops to Rangoon faster than I can even unload my Armour.

Enough is enough in Burma. Time to withdraw from Rangoon now since Faber has nearly 700 AV there now and more is coming. I wll redeploy these units to Moulmein and continue to slowly but surely bomb the sh*t out of the Japanese until either:

a.) I breakthrough at Mandalay, Pagan or north of Rangoon.

b.) I receive enough reinforcements to move somewhere else.

VERY disappointing..............

-----------------

My fighter sweep performed well over Balikpapan. As predicted Faber flew in further fighters. The Japanese lost 52 planes to my 9 x P38J. The avergae experience of the unit rose from 59 to 65....veterans in the making......tomorrow the Heavies have been ordered back to finish off the Oilfields with the P38J's as escort.

I may not go for Macassar now. Infact I am tempted to not disclose where I will go for next in the SRA. I know I go on about this from time to time but isn't ist amazing that only Macassar was receiving reinforcements. Bali hasn't, Kendari hasn't, Menado hasn't, Amboina hasn't, Babo hasn't[8|]

------------------

SS Devlifish evaded convoy escorts 300 miles east of Palembang.

All in all it's been a quiet few days for my submarines which I don't like. Probably time to relocate my patrols............

Air sightings = 12
Air attacks = 0

-------------------

All in all this day leaves me frustrated and with a sour taste in my mouth..........

Until tomorrow everyone night night.

witpqs -> RE: 20th April 1944 (12/9/2006 1:59:55 AM)

Speedy,

I read both AAR's, which is why I withhold comment on operations. I can say that no 'opsec violations' have been posted in Fabertong's AAR. I hope that is some comfort.

Capt. Harlock -> Rangoon and Richmond (12/9/2006 4:37:51 AM)

When you study the map, an amphib assault at Rangoon wasn't that hard to guess. I'm afraid your situation is now much like what Grant faced trying to take Richmond. The enemy has a well-thought-out line of defense. There will be no brilliant manuever that can give you a breakthrough. You'll just have to find the weakest spot and hammer it until it gives.

They're all against you....against you I say....next it will be the strawberries....
