Wow.  This should be very interesting.  Your fleet is going to be surrounded by Japanese airfields.  How much LBA do you have allocated to pound the penguin airfields?

Speedysteve -> 12th June 1944 (1/18/2007 12:36:59 PM)

Hi all,

Hi Mike - In reality though I control the airspace all over Balikpapan, Banjarmasin and Soerabaja. I can close any of those at will and have done over the past 2 months. Faber can not compete with my planes OR my pilot experience now. He has no free training grounds anywhere (even China) and as such is limited to 'historical pilots levels'.

I have a lot of airpower in the region. Let me see from memory (combat aircraft):

Raba - 24 x Spitfire VIII.

Maumere - 24 x F4U1D, 144 x P38J, 64 x B25J.

Koepang - 72 x P47D, 96 x B29, 48 x PB4Y, 16 x Beaufort.

Lautem - 48 x Spitfire, 80 x B25J.

Darwin - (massive reserve) - 16 x B25J, 48 x Beaufort, 7 x Corsair Squadron, 48 x Spitfire, 72 x P47D, 6 x SB2C/TBM Squadrons.

Rest of Australia (within 3-4 days reach) - 112 x B24J, 48 x A20G, oodles of Beaufighers/Kittyhawks/Spitfires...........

The key is the reach of escort fighters for the Heavies. Everything within 11 hexes of Maumere is dead basically or can be in a day.

----------------------

Things are real fun at the moment. Today was a day for 2 submarines - SS Bashaw on USN side and SS I-52 on IJN side.

I-52 (detected on last screenshot) did well and hit CVE Gambier Bay with a torpedo (34/42/26) and even had the balls to heavily damage DD Albert Grant with a follow up torpedo attack (60/34/8). She was left heavily damaged by the escorts though. The damaged ships will harbour in Maumere. Hopefully they will be fine.

No visible Japanese air or sea reaction so far to Operation Raven. Fine by me.

72 x P38J will also fly LRCAP over my TF's tomorrow currently 120 miles NE of Maumere.

SS Bashaw is patrolling mid-way between Iwo Jima and Okinawa. In the morning she probably sank the troop laden AP Nichiro Maru with 2 torpedoes. A few hours later she attacked (what is assumed to be a CV TF) CA Maya and hit her with a torpedo. I doubt she will sink. If she was hit by another torpedo I doubt she would make port. In return she received 6 x DC near miss - 12/0/0.

---------------------

It's time to make my move on the 3rd front - Burma. I have ordered 1/2 of my Moulmein force to advance across the river 60 NE. I want to cut his supply route and starve him as well as bomb him to death.

CentPac forces are 2 days sail from Wake Island...........the last friendly outpost before entering enemy territory.

----------------------

An AK, LCI and SS Sea Devil arrive in theatre tomorrow.

Death on Toast to Slowy![:'(]

Speedysteve -> 14th June 1944 (1/18/2007 6:41:22 PM)

Hi all,

Forgot to post on 13th June. Little happened. No attacks on my approaching ships. Sank an AK and heavily damaged an AP.

-------------------

The 14th was rivetting.............

Faber had flown in planes to several bases in the SRA. My LBA targetted Macassar, Kendari, Bail and Soerabaja.

There were a mass of attacks by the Japanese directed towards my ships 60 miles SW of Banjarmasin. I could post all of the attacks but the short of it is that several planes broke through my CAP despite horrendous losses by the Japanese (300 A2A losses to my 59). CVE Kitkun Bay was fatally struck by 2 torpedoes and was scuttled by me (I am not impressed by my CVE handling in this operation). BB Resolution was hit by a bomb. Several other attack runs were made but the AA held them off and who knows how good the Japanese pilots were.

IMO it shows once again how my veteran pilots (80-99 exp) flying Hellcats/Wildcats and P38J's can kick arse. Approximately 20-60 planes were flying CAP at each point during the day.

I have flown both P38J FG's to Raba now to continue LRCAP tomorrow over Banjarmasin.

LBA will hit Malang and Soerabaja.

1 x BB TF will bombard Banjarmasin the other will stay on surface combat duty in case his SC TF decides to enter the battle.

Tomorrow should be a big day again!

I wonder how many opeational planes Faber has left on his AF's in the region.

I've attached a screenshot of the planes losses for the day.

-------------------

My Moulmein forces should cross the river to the NE tomorrow.

-------------------

BB Fuso appears to have left Wasile and SS Razorback was sunk after heavily damaging DD Yunagi with a torpedo 60 miles SE of Wasile.

-------------------

My CentPac forces will pass south of Wake Island tomorrow.

-------------------

3 x LCI and an AK arrive in theatre tomorrow as does a Sunderland squadron.

Speedysteve -> 15th June 1944 (1/19/2007 1:31:44 AM)

Hi all,

Wow what a day. Boy am I tired so I will try to be quick.

A mass of battles in and around Banjarmasin.

Firstly, at night an enemy CA squadron attacked my supply convoy 60 miles SW of Banjarmasin and only sank 1 AK[:-] I had 2 x DE as escort!

Secondly, BB Ise and BB Hyuga tried to contest my Banjarmasin landings. For Bruce here's the disappointing CR. It's disappointing since I surprised him but did little damage. a 15" shell did penetrate BB Hyuga though. BB Resolution is at 45/49/10. Limping back to Raba hoping to make protection range of P47D by daylight tomorrow. DD Onami sank at daybreak.:

Night Time Surface Combat, near Banjarmasin at 27,64

Japanese Ships
BB Ise, Shell hits 2
BB Hyuga, Shell hits 5
CA Nachi, Shell hits 1
DD Onami, Shell hits 12, on fire, heavy damage
DD Asashio, Shell hits 6, on fire, heavy damage
DD Kawakaze, Shell hits 2, on fire
DD Satsuki
DD Minazuki
DD Hakaze
DD Akikaze, Shell hits 3, on fire
DD Kuri
DD Otori

Allied Ships
BB Warspite, Shell hits 3
BB Valiant
BB Resolution, Shell hits 1, Torpedo hits 2, on fire
CA Devonshire
CA Frobisher
CL Mauritius, Shell hits 1
CL Birmingham, Shell hits 1
CL Newcastle
DD Arrow
DD Decoy
DD Nepal
DD Nestor
DD Norman
DD Rocket
DD Rotherham

The key thing I guess is that my landings took place without interruption and surpisingly met little resistance. It turns out Banjarmasin is only held by 2nd Kure SNLF + 2 x BF. IMO a mistake on Faber's part or maybe I have stretched his LCU's thin? I am ashore in strength and will shock attack tomorrow.

--------------------

During the day the AM was clouded in. The PM was different. None of my LBA took off to hit Japanese airfields BUT

An IJN CV TF is 60 miles SE of Balikpapan! They attacked Banjarmasin forces but met fierce resistance from Hellcats and P38J's. My veterans shot down 100 enemy planes for the loss of 22 during the day. I expect Faber's piltos to poorly trained by now. Some planes did break through and managed to put a bomb into CVE White Plains and CVE Natoma Bay. CVE White Plains suffered a following explosion leaving her at 49/5/13.

Further attacks were launched from Java. Several planes broke through but only managed to damage an AK.

All in all not a bad day.

125 enemy planes lost for my 29.

Banjaramsin will fall and that is the KEY factor here. With it Java will be isolated and in time Borneo will be mine and Sumatra/Singapore cut off.

-----------------

In other news my men moved NE of Moulemin into a hail of bullets. They didn't achieve much (as expected) but they will hopefully hold on to cut Japanese supply lines into Burma:

Ground combat at 30,34

Allied Shock attack

Attacking force 72604 troops, 321 guns, 997 vehicles, Assault Value = 1156

Defending force 121503 troops, 1363 guns, 6 vehicles, Assault Value = 2462

Allied max assault: 1216 - adjusted assault: 256

Japanese max defense: 2452 - adjusted defense: 1463

Allied assault odds: 0 to 1

Japanese ground losses:
941 casualties reported
Guns lost 34

Allied ground losses:
2337 casualties reported
Guns lost 100
Vehicles lost 49

---------------

An LSM and CVE Makassar Strait appear in theatre tomorrow.

Capt. Harlock -> RE: 15th June 1944 (1/19/2007 2:08:05 AM)

Impressive combat! (Aren't you glad you had the British BB's for surface action?) How long do you think it will take to have an operational airfield on Borneo?

Speedysteve -> 16th June 1944 (1/19/2007 3:46:48 PM)

Hi all,

Hi Capt. - I'm VERY happy I brought those British BB's along. Very happy..........Banjarmasin was easily stormed today and the Japanese routed towards Balikpapan. The airfield and port are wrecked (through my own doing) and will be repaired within 2-3 days. I will then have an operational airfield on Borneo[:)]

----------------------

The Japanese have still tried to contest Banjarmasin but the amount of air attacks and their ferocity has diminished. Today for example their were no air attacks from any Japanese airfield, only from IJN CV's 60 miles SW of Balikpapan. 90 DB/TB escorted by 12 x Zeke attacked my troop convoy at Banjarmasin. The veteran P38J's performed fantastically though. About 1/2 of the bombers broke through and managed to hit:

AK Edward N. Westcott, Bomb hits 1
LSV Ozark, Bomb hits 1, on fire
SC SC-740, Bomb hits 1, on fire, heavy damage
AP Herald of Morning, Bomb hits 1, on fire
AK Mormacport, Bomb hits 2, on fire, heavy damage

SC SC-740 was enveloped in flames and quickly sank.

Thsi attack cost the Japanese 42 planes though for the loss of 5 x P38J.

By the end of the day though Banjarmasin was in Allied hands and the troops are in good shape[:)] I will rest tomorrow whilst the final combat elements are unloaded, support troops disembark and supplies flow ashore.

I have already put the 2nd hase in motion though. Operation Rook is the capture of NW Borneo. Whilst land forces march on Balikpapan para units and small groups of USA men and Tanks will capture Sampit, Pontianak and Singkawang. Meanwhile in Darwin 2 x USA Division, 2 x Tk Bn + Eng are embarking for the future invasion of Kuching..............

Once Banjarmasin is up and running P38J's will dominate the area..............

My Heavies destroyed 100 planes on the ground at Malang and Soerabaja today.

-----------------------

In Burma the Japanese performed well and smashed back the allied advance towards Moulmein. My men were battered heavily. So much for cutting his supply line[8|]

------------------------

In CentPac an Emily located my invasion flees SW of Wake Island. I am about 4-5 days out of Saipan...............

-------------------------

SS Trusty was sunk with all hands by a 4 x PC TF 60 miles west of Singapore. She did manage to heavily damage PC PC-18 with a torpedo first though.

SS Pickerel, tracking the IJN CV's near Balikpapan, was chased off in the morning by 5 x DD. She later on blew up AK Chile Maru with 2 torpedoes. Then in the afternoon she managed to fire 4 torpedoes at CV Katsuragi.........all missed! In return she received 1 x DC hit and 4 x DC near miss - 28/34/0. Quite a day for SS Pickerel.

SS Harder received 2 x DC near miss from 4 x ASW vessels deep in the Phillipine Sea.

SS Manta blew up AK Asukazan Maru with 2 torpedoes 300 miles SW of Hong Kong. In return she received 2 x DC hit and 16 x Dc near miss - 40/10/0. Back to Darwin.

SS Barbel sank the fuel carrying AK Narita Maru with 2 torpedoes 120 miles SE of Davao.

SS Guavina blew up the Balikpapan retreating AK San Francisco Maru with 3 torpedoes.

Air sightings = 12
Air attacks = 0

-------------------------

2 x AK and an LCI arrive in theatre tomorrow.

The IJN CV's appear to have moved to the NE towards Tarakan.

Only 2 small raids were made against Allied shipping at Banjarmasin today by Graces/Tonys from Malang, Java. 30 enemy planes were shot down and no damage was sustained by my ships.

My engineers have opened up 1/2 of the runways at Banjarmasin and the first Allied planes touched down for operations tomorrow - a P47D FG.

By the end of the day almost 60 enemy planes were lost ot all causes against my 24.

------------------------

Several enemy patrol planes tracked my CentPac forces today. 3 of the gits were shot down by Hellcats.

8 x airgroup were boarded at San Francisco as were 140,000 tonnes of supply and 340,000 tonnes of fuel for operations in both SRA and CentPac. More troops (support) will also be embarked soon.

SS Billfish evaded 4 x DD 60 miles east of Soerabaja.

SS Seahorse sank AP Taganoura Maru with 2 torpedoes 300 miles east of Leyte.

Speedysteve -> 18th June 1944 (1/19/2007 10:26:37 PM)

Hi all,

Hi Rob - I know. They will be fine baring a submarine or massive air attack. Banjarmasin is now operational and as such is no longer easily pnetrable by the Japanese.

The arrival of 8th FG P47Ds the previous night at Banjarmasin proved crucial today. Despite my P38J's LRCAPing Banja from Maumere/Raba AND being immensely successful the combat stress of the ast few days has taken it's toll with about 25% of both FG's losing pilots and they were down to about 30% operational aircraft.

As such when another IJN CV TF turned up near Balikpapan and launched a raid of 117 x DB/TB escorted by 50 x Zeke they met a wall of 46 x P47D and 12 x P38J. The plane and pilot experience showed again as the Japanese lost 40ish x Zeke and 60ish x DB/TB vs 6 friendly planes! My boys have an average experience of 80ish in these groups now.

The rest of the bombers did break through however and scored the following hits:

MSW Impeccable, Bomb hits 1, on fire
LST LST-222, Bomb hits 1, on fire
AK David J. Brewer, Bomb hits 1
AK Edmund Fanning, Bomb hits 1, on fire

Nothing serious though. All ships were empty of cargo.

All airfields at Banja are operational now and in the evening 1 x Spitfire VIII Squadron, PBY Squadron and a TBM Squadron flew in. Corsairs will be there in 2 days.

The P38J's are being rested now before being deployed at Banja in the future to support the move up the west coast.

I have recieved damage to probably 30-40 ships in this operation but amazingly have only lost 3 ships (IIRC) - CVE, AK, SC.

I am pretty happy with this over all.

------------------

SS Pogy missed AK Norway Maru with 6 torpedoes 240 miles NW of Iwo Jima.

SS Spearfish damaged the troop laden AP Nitta Maru with a torpedo 120 miles east of Tarakan. Clearly bringing in troops. Fine by me. The more the merrier to destroy in 'non-atoll' attacks.

SS I-45 was detected by CentPac forces inbetween Saipan and Wake Island. DD Cony, Conway and Schroeder saw her under for the final time.

Air sightings = 14
Air attacks = 1

--------------------

SS Trenchant, SS Blenny and an AK arrive in theatre tomorrow as does a TBM Squadron.

Alfred -> RE: 18th June 1944 (1/20/2007 2:54:28 AM)

Speedy,

Very impressive coordination of DEI and CentPac attacks.  It is unlikely that the penguin has much naval power now available to oppose CentPac.

The weak penguin forces at Banjarmasin strongly suggest that the strategy to draw off penguin forces to other fronts (ie Burma) is working and that he lacks a strong strategic reserve.  After CentPac has drawn in whatever local reserves he has, there should be easy pickings in SoPac.

As you are mopping up the Borneo bases may I suggest that you consider Toaboali as a possible coup de main target.  It has substantial resource centres so that it ought to be self sufficient in supplies and once the airfield is built up, will allow the deployment of some of your Darwin Corsairs to strike at the heart of Sumatra.  Together with Kuching you would than close down Singapore with your medium range fighters.  Also do not overlook oportunities east of Sorong in Dutch New Guinea to strike at Pelau which will probably become the centre of penguin resistance to your Marianas operations.

Alfred

Speedysteve -> 19th June 1944 (1/21/2007 12:08:49 PM)

Hi all,

Thanks guys. I coulf fly B29's from Banja to Palembang but I don't intend to. As Alfred alluded to onmce I capture Singkawang and Kuching I can dominate all the sea up to Saigon with Mediums. In effect little should be able to get through without risking air attack.

-----------------

The Banja TBM's launched their first missions today against fleeing IJN shipping on the west coast of Borneo. My assumption was incorrect. CA Kinugasa, CL Noshiro, DD Haursame and DD Asanagi were NOT sunk. My TBM's put 5 bombs into CL Noshiro which finished her off and DD Asanagi also sank today.

The Singkawang/Kuching invasion forces will reach Koepang soon.

There were no enemy air tatacks in the region today and his CV's appear to have withdrawn. I guess that about closes the Banja battles since I have sufficeint air power there to thwart any attack now (F4U1D Squadron is there aswell now).

------------------

My Centpac forces are 3 days out from the Saipan area. They are being tracked by several patrol craft and at least 8 submarines are in the area. SS I-21, I-38, I-17 and I-31 all attempted to engage my TF's today. They were all thwarted and sunk by the c.200 escort ships in the 60 miles area. Some even desparately tried to hit the oncoming DD's with torpedoes (all of which failed to hit).

SS Tudor was attacked by a PC TF 180 miles ENE of Palembang. 2 x DC hit, 4 x DC near miss - 36/74/0. Will try to make Columbo.

SS Hammerhead was attacked by convoy escorts 240 miles SW of Hong Kong. 1 x DC near miss - 12/0/0.

Air sightings = 14
Air attacks = 1

2 x AK, LST, AO and AP arrive in theatre tomorrow.

Hi all,

Usual stuff in Burma today. May well attack at Mandalay some point in the near future.

--------------

In the SRA my combat units have fully disembarked at Banja. They are now formed up and marching in unison towards Balikpapan.

Faber has posted the results of his LBA strike against Operation Albatross. Your CAP levels were obscene -- no other way to put it. However, I don't think the forces you have were that much greater than those in the actual Marianas turkey shoot. Maybe it's time for a house rule on the coordination of CV's with CVE's?

Alfred -> RE: 20th June 1944 (1/23/2007 9:13:26 AM)

Speedy,

I notice that your screen shots have no hexes displayed.  Do you actually play with hexes off and if so, does that not make it more difficult to place sub patrols, determine ETA of TF, set reaction range etc.  What do you see as the advantages (other than a more attractive map) of playing without hexes.  Just curious.

Alfred

Hi all,

Hi Andy - Thanks[:)]

Hi Capt. - Crazy just crazy. Even with 40% CAP the Radar whacks it up to almost maximum (IF no attacking strikes are performed by my CV's). I've suggested to Faber on a CV limit per hex (3-4 CV's i'm thinking). The full results of death for the Japanese are posted posthumously below.

Hi Alfred - I always play with hexes off. If i'm honest I see no impact in my placing of subs, planning etc. I'm 100% used to it and as such it's not a problem. As you say the main reason I played without them was to make it look prettier. Now it's a formality for me.
