Why am I limited to only 100 Ducats as spain when supsiding portugal while england can give them 700- even 800. its not fair I have no way of competing even with both my diplomats charming the heck out of them.

see old topic on this that comes to the general conclusion that subsidizing is a waste of time and money. Use your diplomats to coup minor states. When they are the protectorate of another major power use diplomats to inssurect. If you successfully coup a minor you will have option then to protetorate them. If you conquer a minor, protectorating them is not an option.

You can pay more, you just have to use the subsidize option several times in a turn.

However, I recommend you don't bother to subsidize at all, unless you want to get a firm feel for what the target country feels for you through the event report the following month.

as they say, you can click on sub and do it more then one time a turn, so you can send as much money as you want

the rest is just point of view or play style

gaining protectorates can be a good thing and or can be a drain of money of you get into a bidding war with other nations

I have also, started up a bidding war, just to force the other nations to spend there money on a Protectorate, I didn't want

there are pro's and con's to either way of playing

my last current game, I got Poland, Baviera, Piemount and Batviera as portectorates
that was close to 1,000,000 Free troops, 5 free Armies, and a free Diplo, not counting all the free Polish and Bavieran troops I have gotten since

(I kind of lost most of the Batvieran troops, when they got stuck in Sweden and there supply line got cut)

(oh, got one of the NA Provinces, getting some troops and acting as a block to the Turks and Spainish in the desert)

Poland, Bavaria and Saxony, IMO are the best minors to protectorate because they give the largest amount of troops.

I keep a diplomat in Poland at all times. When Poland is someone else's protec. I give inssurect order to diplo. Usually when Poland is protec of someone else that major will decalre war to take advantage of having the polish army. Kinda cool to see those armies disappear when the insurrection occurs and the major power is left holding an empty bag.

When Poland is free minor I give diplo coup order. It may take a long time, but if I stick to my plan I eventually get a coup. The next turn I then protecorate Poland.

I also leave a diplo in Paris with expel order. That way no enemy diplo remains in my territory for very long. I target other minors with diplo's the same way I do with poland, usually picking on British protectorates. In my current two games I have more satellite troops than I can form into corps.

Hope this helps.

I insist in the idea, subsidy is the best way to obtain protectorates

You're limited because your game doesn't like you. I suggest taking it for more walks and maybe giving it a treat now and then... [:'(]
