Now that Matrix is dipping into the re-releasing of older games, how about the possibility of obtaining the rights to bring Panzer General I into the XP PC age?....I think that there is a new generation of gamer out there who would discover this classic and older gamers would enjoy the experience anew on modern computers...

Terminus -> RE: Panzer General Redux (1/23/2006 7:40:48 PM)

Yeah, Panzer General was awesome for its time...

I doubt there is much one can do to improve the panzer general series. Unless one does som radical changes like transforms the str points into tanks, infantry and other equipment, etc. Or a full european campaign 1939-1945.

..... but who would want to play it now? Things have moved on.

There were like gazillion panzer general clones. The gameplay formula was more or less the same in each and every one of them. They sure knew how to milk the gametype dry.

My father (born 1944) plays Panzer General II regularly. He knows not better game than it, except online Bridge.

Panzer General I was sooo huge!!! The first two missions at Poland were so exciting. I played those as Poland as well.

Have they really moved on? Think about it for a moment.....tell me the game that has a WWII scenario tree that gives you a tactical feel in a strategic setting....sure, you can classify it as a "beer and pretzels" or "rock paper scissors" game but the overall experience was still enjoyable...some of the large Russian front scenarios with the additional auxilliary units were a blast to play....now, I will be looking forward to games like Strategic Command 2 and A World in Flames, but I still would noodle with an upgraded Panzer General 1 on my notebook any day....

Pippin -> RE: Panzer General Redux (1/24/2006 2:08:04 AM)

I tried to get PG I to run on XP, but it was a partial success. I had to keep a win 95 box handy. This is ironic, as today and yesterday I was trying to find my PG 3D CDs and I have no idea where they are. The 3D series COULD have been a big success, but throw in the unstability and a few other things and you can see why it didn't go very far. Big shame, considering PG 1 was a huge milestone in wargaming.

P.S. I also have People's General and a few other clones... can't get them to work on XP either!!!

Hanal -> RE: Panzer General Redux (1/24/2006 3:35:26 AM)

There are emulators that are supposed to make PG1 run well on an XP machine but I'll be damned if I found one that works yet....Allied General and Pacific General were good follow ups in the PG line but I never warmed to the later Assault and 3D versions....

I have read review of the PG where it says something about imitating Battle Isle serie. Sounds to me like PG is clone of the BI.

DOS version of the PG works fine with DOSBox. Now you're damned [:D]

Ok, found my PG 3D Assault CD tonight. Installed it, and didn't even make my first move on the Guderian campaign, and the bloody thing just crashed on me. [:@]

I have played BI. Not a bad game at all. Allthough PG is successor to BI it was not until PG that they really milked the gametype.
