stevel40831 -> American Civil War - Game Recommendations? (1/24/2006 7:43:18 PM)

Hi,

I'm interested in some recommendations for American Civil War games. I have an interest in one each at the tactical and strategic level.

For tactical-level, graphics are interesting although I would much prefer to play a game where the emphasis is on strategy and tactics than the razzle dazzle of 3D graphics. I played the old SSI versions of Antietam and Gettysburg and I liked those. I see the ones from HPS and have only lukewarm interest due to the horrible AI in the Panzer Campaign series. If the AI is better in the Civil War games, those may be of interest.

For strategic-level, I'm looking for something that obviously covers the entire war. I'd like something that covers economic and political factors as well as the military. Would like to see some of the naval/river activity represented as well. I had an old boardgame from Victory Games called "The Civil War" that would be perfect if it were on the pc.

Thanks a lot for any responses!

Steve

An old SSI game called No Greater Glory is a realy fun strategic level game. It covers the Political, Economic and Military aspect of the war.

Frank Hunters American Civil War is also a very good game I might add.

Have you tried Sid Meir game Gettysburg or Antietam?
It is real time but different from other click fest RTS
Firaxis provided patch for both games to be compatible with Windows XP

I have Gettyburg CD (manual on CD) and if you are interested, I am interested in any panzer campaign game from HPS to trade in with my gettysburg.
(ah since I am living in Canada, a few extra dollars for shipping for both of us [:D])

Bull run from Madminiute games is also RTS (somewhat similar to Sid's game)
Every body seems to be very happy with the game especially with AI
Sequel is now available
I think you can find the game from NWS online

THis one has a lot of fun to it and you can PBEM. Their used to be a site that Frank hosted that had tournaments and all. I don't know what happened to the group after the site closed.
