Afrika Korps -> Annoying battle problems with random campaigns (1/28/2006 2:06:48 AM)

Ok, time to spout off a bit.

More than a few times, I get a battle map that is fairly large, weather and visibility are horrible (fine, the fortunes of war) so my movement off-road is one hex a turn and there will be no long range direct fire support, only unspotted arty.

I lined my troops up right on the startline, but counting the hexes to the VHs, I have exactly 4 turns to capture them all, assuming I march across the map unopposed (ya right) and fight the defensive forces up there right on top of the hexes. Basically, the battle cannot be realisticly won, regardless of how I perform.

What do I do? I am in the middle of a campaign in this particular case...in other cases, if a random battle, I just do it over. So, I take it you just have to do the best you can and simply lose the battle? Bah...I need more turns! (The map is at night, a sandstorm, visibility of 4, and the VHs are 32 hexes away to the first row, and I have 36 turns to get there...one...hex...a...turn...maximum). [:o]

Buy transport with support points?

I guess due to the sandstorm, movement is only one hex a turn...except on roads, but the only road doesn't go that way...

I went back to the end of the prior battle and had a new map generated that is more forgiving to the number of turns. I don't mind horrible weather, low visibility maps...I just prefer to be given a realistic number of turns to complete the objectives.

This is a problem with the random generated campaigns, and you have found the only 'fix' to it: save every campaign battle at its end, and if the next one isn't to your liking, restart the endgame turn of the last battle.

Hello...

Or reinforcement points, if you did not realize it would take so long to transit map when buying support units.

Bye...

You know, in all the games I have played, I have never called for reinforcement. How does that affect your score? How many points do you get? I seem to recall it being some % of your overall core force point value (memory is hazy on this).

Riun T -> RE: Annoying battle problems with random campaigns (1/28/2006 6:55:36 PM)

I think it 1/3 of the core force points but I 'll look it up and I must admit that I too save at the end of battle spicificly for the advantage of reselecting a better playing field if weather or terrain and most importantly mission are'nt to my liking. wouldn't it be nice to have a mission change button? I'd love to make a defend or delay a meeting engagement or full out advance and often leave covered holes in my defence designs for counterattacks and flanking measures.RT

KG Erwin -> RE: Annoying battle problems with random campaigns (1/28/2006 9:10:54 PM)

Calling for reinforcements is basically appealing to the regimental commander to save your butt. I don't do it, regardless of the circumstances. You have a mission to accomplish, and you do it with the resources at your disposal.

As for bad weather/terrain, I've come to expect it as a Lt Col in charge of a US Marine battalion.

The real question is: why do we entertain ourselves by indulging in such a hostile virtual environment? After 30+ years of wargaming, I still can't explain it. [sm=crazy.gif]

It is not at all entertainment. It's all for the duty.

Purchasing reinforcements does not necessarily cost you a Decisive Victory, they may be also a quick way to end a scenario (and save enemy's blood). Purchasing several pieces of artillery you can suppress the enemy force and end battle with minimum casualties. It is useful if you see that the enemy has no chances at all to win the battle (a dull battle).

Wow. You ARE hardcore. For me, saving the enemy's blood isn't an issue. My goal is to annihilate the bad guys, but in the real Pacific War, that was often made necessary. It's a sticky issue -- does humanitarism extend to your opponents as well as ensuring the minimum casualties to your own troops? Yeah, it's just a game, but there are deeper issues which are implied, such as taking prisoners as opposed to killing them all. This is the type of stuff that wargamers don't like to talk about, or even think about.

Puukkoo -> RE: Annoying battle problems with random campaigns (1/28/2006 10:29:13 PM)

Well, it definitely is more those dull battles I want to skip. Being a closet hippie, like you, I sometimes just feel sorry for the enemy infantry.

KG Erwin -> RE: Annoying battle problems with random campaigns (1/28/2006 10:35:43 PM)

Closet hippie? Yeah, maybe so. [:D]

Riun T -> RE: Annoying battle problems with random campaigns (1/29/2006 2:12:04 AM)

Its a totally in battle decision for me in the scence that if the enemy just shoots at a crew of mine that mistakenly retreated towards their position and fired on them in opp fire cause they moved I don't extract a penlty, but if after the've blown the unit with heavy fire and continue to fire on my retreating crew with heavy directed fire I am more than willing to overrun, fire into and call Arrty down on any enemy not giving a gentlemans quarter to an allready decimated units retreat. RT
Thats thinking I want to DESTROY all of them rather than just defeat them[:@]
