BlackSunshine -> ETA on next patch? (1/28/2006 5:19:23 AM)

OK... I've been waiting patiently enough. I would like to start a new PBEM game as I have become incredibly bored with WPO (what a snoozefest!)

We all know it takes forever to finish a PBEM game. So I dont want to get a year or so in and restart because a newer version is out. So how long will it be before the next official patch is released?

As a second question, I am currently playing 1.6, what are the problems which are currently being addressed for the next patch?

Nikademus -> RE: ETA on next patch? (1/28/2006 5:25:03 AM)

Sheesh...twice in one week. [:D]

No ETA as of yet.

Only twice? What have you broken this week Nik?[:D]

Nikademus -> RE: ETA on next patch? (1/28/2006 5:27:59 AM)

only my GF's kittie. PUNT!

BlackSunshine -> RE: ETA on next patch? (1/28/2006 5:30:13 AM)

Well maybe if we could get an answer, people wouldn't keep asking the question.

Or, maybe they should sticky the question if it bothers you so much.

It's kind of hard to read through some of the drivel that is posted here. Sorry if I missed it.

*edit*

ugh, that was a waste of a 100th post.

Any wanna let me know what they are fixing from 1.6?

Nikademus -> RE: ETA on next patch? (1/28/2006 5:31:32 AM)

The only thing that bothers me are kitties.....particularily kitties that eat expensive stereo headphones.

Kitties are meant to be PUNTed.

Check the limited public beta subforum. listing is sticky'd

scout1 -> RE: ETA on next patch? (1/28/2006 5:38:27 AM)

v1.8 is still months away. I'm guess due to resource issues. Stick with v1.73b in the meantime ....

Nomad -> RE: ETA on next patch? (1/28/2006 5:52:30 AM)

Nah, 1.795 beta is much better. [:D]

I still think all the bugs are Niks fault, he is a master at breaking the code. [8D]

Especially for the NCOs. Afterall, their chances of command go way up when half the officers in the military go AWOL. [8|]

Well, those Staff Officers and WOs have to have something to do. [:)] I see no problem with a Warrent Officer in charge of my best CV Taskforce. [&:]

I hope Mike is working on this a few minutes a week. [:'(]

Can that happen in all 1.795 games or only games started with an earlier version and upgraded to 1.795 mid-game?

What do you find so boring about it, in particular? Or is it because there are actually slow days, and not a gazillion things going on at once all over the map. I for one actually like being able to do a turn in under 10 minutes everynow and then [;)]

michaelm75au -> RE: ETA on next patch? (1/28/2006 7:30:37 AM)

Current games upgraded to 1.795 will usually kill off a block of leaders.

Games started anew with 1.795 seem to fine in regard to leaders. There is the occasional leader disappearance, generally after splitting LCU/groups. But not always. Seems much better in that regard.

Other complaint seems that IJ pilots are not always going to their historical air group.

Hey it has its moments of quickening pulse.

No matter how careful I am lately, I keep getting surprised by mid-ocean intercepts of my Transport TFs.[:o]

Sitting there for several minutes watching the puny escorts battle those BC/CLs while wondering how many AP/AKs will survive.[:(] [I don't skip the animations. I need to feel my sailor's pain.]

Look forward to the "snoozefest" then, at least for awhile.[:D]

Hey, I felt the same thing. In my game with Term, I had an entire convoy running from the PI wiped out... 10,000 tons of fuel at the bottom of the sea, along with a half a dozen gunboats, APs, and AKs. If there is a snooze fest, I haven't seen it yet. [:D]

No fits from them. They were inspecting the cargo when the attack came.

Sorry Tankerace, I guess I should give you an answer, at least my opinion.

I just think the game moves too slowly. A couple of reasons. It is very easy to avoid a Surface engagement if you want, and what does that leave? Nothing as there are very few if any air combats. Also, if playing by PBEM and using house rules for engagements, you lose what could be a lot of action, in favor of balance. Maybe it's just me but I think ground combat seems to drag on as well. Was ground combat changed in WPO?

It just feels like at times there is nothing to do. I guess it is a matter of playstyle. But as the Japanese with "realistic" house rules, one could capture the Phillipines with everything they have, and sit still for the remaining 3+ years and still win the game on points alone. You don't need resources or oil, so there is nothing for the Japanese to do, but hold the Phillipines.

There is constantly something to do in WITP. Even the simple action of trying to get supplies to a remote location can become a nightmare. Aircraft makes a huge difference and makes the game much more exciting.

I know you had a lot to do with the game, and it is still a great title, but it just lost it's appeal to me quickly. It definately had an authentic "WW1" feel to it, and that just wasn't very fun for me. It is definately PBEM friendly in regards to being able to finish the war quickly, but be prepared for lots of turns of doing nothing.

Now of course you can play the game without houserules, but the Japanese will quickly be overwhelmed. And that's no fun at all.

Terminus -> RE: ETA on next patch? (1/29/2006 4:10:14 AM)

A reason for the seemingly slower land combat in WPO could be lower firepower of LCU's.

The basic Japanese SNLF Squad in WitP has 27 points of "Anti Soft" rating; the same squad in WPO has 16 points.

Tankerace -> RE: ETA on next patch? (1/29/2006 4:43:14 AM)

Well, I understand your opinions, and I am sorry that you don't find it that fun. The game probably have more of a "fun factor" if it moved faster, but that wasn't my intention. My intention was to create a realistic depiction of 1920's warfare. Ground combat, for instance, as you said moves slower. But in the 1920's, it was no where near as fast as in WW2. In WWI, a "Grand Offensive" was lucky if it bagged 12 miles. That's 1/5th of a hex. If I had kept everything as in WitP, and players gained 3 or 4 hexes a month (180-240 miles), people would have boycotted WPO as being nothing but a rehash.

Avoiding surface engagements... well, that too was a facet of WWI warfare. Avoiding them, Seeking Them, and Bungling into them are all modeled in WPO.

I'm not trying to say your wrong. When I first began working on this, my intention was not to create a "fast paced, fun filled hullabalou" (Don't ask me what a hullabalou is, that just popped in there). My intention was to create a reasonable depiction of 1920s warfare. And using WWI as a base for both land and sea, a lot of it (from a grand scale, not the individual's scale) was just sitting there, stockpiling up for the next offensive, digging in, or biding time while doing either.

As to exciting, I find WitP's constant air attacks, ground combats, and everything all over the map exciting, but a lot of what you have to do is straight forward. In my game with Terminus in WPO, I find a different kind of excitement, in that it feels like I am blind with one hand behind my back, and it makes it extra challenging.

I fully realize that WPO is not everybody's cup of tea. But I do feel it is a fairly realistic depiction of a WWI/1920s war, and that is what I intended.

Perhaps a production on variant of the campaigns would be more to your liking?

One other big problem ACE. The WITP surface combat system doesn't work very well, and it is oriented towards night actions. The actions you are hoping to portray should mostly be day actions and much more formally organized than the WITP system allows. So you were to an extent "trapped" before you began.

Tankerace -> RE: ETA on next patch? (1/29/2006 8:33:13 AM)

Maybe so. And I will admit that there are a few more night actions than I would like. BUT, that being said, it is relatively easy (if one plans it) to have a day battle, and in both testing and now playing the game, I find it works very well. Not saying its perfect, but in my mind in practice it works pretty good.
