Campy -> newbie questions - help is appreciated (1/28/2006 6:50:07 AM)

just started playing around with the game yesterday and had a few questions.

1. Is it possible to assign manager tendencies globally so I don't have to go into each team and assign tendencies of the era, ie. very patient in pulling starters.

which leads to my next question

2. In the simulations that I have run, the pitching stats don't come out right because the computer AI uses relief pitching in years where startes routinely pitched 9 innings...any tricks to work around this?

3. Ballparks and logo -- is there anyway to globally assign ballparks and logos to historical teams...in order to run a true historical simulation, you need to have the right ballparks in play, esp in the deadball era...it seems rather tortured to have to assign ballparks every team you want to run a league.

4. any good download sites for player faces and alternate stadiums...i downloaded the player pack on the puresim website

overall i like the game. I am going to try to replay a historical season (probabyl 1978) and enter the transactions on a daily basis.

ok, by playing around I have partially answered questions 1 and 3

Before my association plays any games, I manually change each team to human control and then change the manager tendencies...if you change the manager tendencies while the team is under CPU control, the changes won't stick.

Then I import ball parks, photos, and team logos.

Then I quit the game before the association does anything -- no spring training. I go into the psa file and copy the psa and save the copy as a master association (i wouldn't save it in your psa file, you might forget about it)

This way you have a ready made association and don't have to input everything...when you want to start a new sim from that year, just copy the master and stick it in your psa file. don't ever use the master for anything but copies

still haven't figured out how to get starters in the pre 1960 era to go 9 innings routinely.

also, I created robison field for st. louis if anyone is interested in it...don't have a photo but I researched the dimensions.

1. Not from within the game UI.

2. No - you can get them through 8 innings routinely, but the AI always wants to use a 'closer'.

3. No - except via starter association as you describe. Personally, I 'export' ballparks once I'm happy with them, so that I can import them to future associations.

4. See the face pack thread, I'm not sure re: stadiums.

....

One thing you may want to play with is editing the puresim.xml file.

I'd recommend making a copy, say 'campy.xml', and playing with that. You'll find many of the in-game AI decisions are 'exposed' in the .xml file.

To address point #2, you would want to look for the "RECOVERY_PITCHER" tag; I found that raising that about 10 points helped pitchers go every 4th game instead of every 5th game.

Likewise, if you wanted to adjust the frequency with which AI managers pinch hit, you might look at "BASE_PINCH_HIT_CHANCE_BY_INNING", "MIN_PINCH_HIT_INNING", "BASE_PINCH_HIT_CHANCE", and "CANCEL_PINCH_HIT_IF_AHEAD_BY".

Getting back to #2, there's a "PITCHER_HOOK" entry which specifies how quickly or un-quickly managers bring pitchers out of games.

If those names aren't intuitive enough, there are some great comments in there explaining what the entries do.

....

I repeat again, make sure you don't modify the default puresim.xml file yourself, or have a backup copy out there - if you mess this file up badly, the game can crash on loading - but that said, its a text file, so you can edit it with WordPad or notepad, and you can play with a bunch of things.

I'd also recommend not immediately starting to use your new .xml file with your beloved association - I typically run long unattended tests (set it on Autoplay when you leave for work, look at data when you get home) to see if I "like" what the changes have done. Some settings, even a subtle change can feel like 'too much', while on others you may find it takes large changes to make a measurable impact.

Typically, I run the default .xml once, then run a (heavily) modified .xml once, and compare. With those baselines in place, I start 'tweaking' the modified .xml, modifying only one variable at a time and seeing what it does; usually the comparison data has given me an indication of whether changes to that variable should be large or small.

I will try to play around with the xml file over the next few days to see if I can solve some of these issues.

My next question is about historical players and replaying while in career mode...

Basically, it looks like it works like this. You create an asociation and then import the real rosters from the given year (I have been starting with 1920)...if you start the sim from there on autoplay, the computer GM's take over and then in 1921 they will hold an amateur draft...at that point, the rosters will no longer reflect historical rosters.

Is there any setting to make the AI look at the 1921 rosters and auto import them to the right teams while it is on autoplay? and do the same for 1922 and on? I realize there is no way to import real life transactions, but I am bummed by the fact that Lou Gehrig does not end up on the Yankees when I have been running my career sims starting in 1920.

Also, I have noticed a bug in the regional associations. When you replay a season from the past, the current franchise's region comes up. In other words, the NY Giants are listed as being in the San Francisco region. When you go into edit the text to New York, it lets you do that. However, on the display screen when you go back, the text shows "New York -- CA"...it does this for all historical franchises...there is some tag deep in the XML that is keeping the franchise in another state...I wonder if that has any effect on game play.

I'm really enjoying the game. I hope there is a way to run historical simulations with accurate rosters over an extended period of time. If not, I will just have to run one season at a time and keep my own historical records

Amaroq -> RE: newbie questions - help is appreciated (1/31/2006 2:05:21 AM)

Yes, that's how it works. You start at a snapshot, but after that the player's manager and the AI managers take over, and it diverges from history.

No, there is not currently any way to do what you're asking on autoplay - you could, however, create new associations each season, auto-importing the players before each year. (Shaun's point was "What would the 'game' be, in that case?" but enough people have asked similar questions over time that he might consider adding an AI-free replay mode someday.)

I haven't noticed that bug, but I usually use a 'seeded' association, not a replay association.
