Titi -> 1792 AAR (some large pics) (2/7/2006 5:00:34 AM)

i Gentlemen,

Just to keep some form of non sarcastic activity on this forum, i will post an AAR of a 1792 game started 2 months ago.
The game was started with 6 players that turned to seven but we learned today that we lost one ... back to six.

If anybody is free to play friday evening in Montréal just drop a line.

We are 4 players with experience of and two newbies of EiA.
The game is a 1792 campaign with all options of EiA except for the advanced naval combat rule.

The game started in april 1792 with the existing war between France and the German alliance. While Prussia advance slowly in the North by conquering one minor at a time, Austria go quicker and clash directly with the frenchmen in and around Piedmont while moving to grab Italy. Surprisingly it's the Austrian troops that were more mobile and won the battle even if both sides took some loses by forage, siege attrition mainly for Austria and land battle mainly for France. But those infantry and cavalry factors will be missed later for revolution troops.

The troops of both side moved to the north of the Alps then, Bavaria being conquered by troops of Vienna that are moving to the West. France do a levée en masse and try to use those fresh militia to march on Munich. But Austrian enter the city while French spend a fortune to supply those troops took some loses during forage and failed to breach the city walls. Austria came back in force won the battle and close the door of Vienna that was huge open.

The year continue and ended with a French receiving no money after a disaster harvest, some battle that saw mainly draws or Austria win over France and France win over Prussia that was trying before the winter to send one corps to Paris. The Frenches became mired in the instability losing Corsica that become later part of Britain, military occupying Flanders and Baden to keep those territories and defend each turn a little more closer and later deeper in France, Austria moved toward dominance and walked in the South and East of France and Prussia stalled with his corps shrining like France that start to feel tactical inferiority on the battlefield due to a lack of cavalry..

Elsewhere, the only other action was GB taking the little islands in the Mediterranean see and becoming the defender of Poland against a Russian aggression that took Russian and Austrian province of her but leave Posen and Masovia as a sign of good will toward Prussia. In the South, Spain put some advisors in Lisbon and see the The Portuguese fleet joining the Spanish and Sicilian fleet and move the war in Algeria.

1793 started like 1972 finished with little skirmishes but in february a huge pressure was felt when Russia and GB ally and Russian infantry corps stationed in two groups of three since the end of the war with Poland around Kiev and Riga moved and regroup suddenly toward Brest-Litovsk and Koningsberg. The last three Russian corps are around St-Petersburg and Finland border waiting the end of winter.
March saw an informal peace between France and Prussia while Russian corps turned back toward where they come.
The month ended by a second and last levée en masse française despite some french provinces being occupied by austrian troops.
April saw France surrendered conditionally to Austria and payed reparation for the next 6 months and removed unhappily three corps. Austria was took by surprise as all money was used to build troops and not develop the economy so removing quickly the political gains of this surrender.

The game continued to december 1793 and saw the Spanish influence extended in Tunisia and Morocco while Turkish took control of Cyrenaica and Tripolitaine. Austria and Prussia took the last german free minors : Wurtenberg and Duchies. GB took Holland and forced the fleet to scuttle in Amsterdam after it failed to force the blockade when the city fall. Russia took control of Scandinavia, gave freedom to Sweden and demobilized the danish fleet that was surprised by the apparition of the swedish fleet the same turn and seek protection of a prussian port after a naval defeat in the Baltic sea.

Here is the victory summary, the political status and some pics of the map at the start of dec. 1793.

Edit to remove the geocities links.

Only one to date : When Russia (me) declared war to Denmark after declaring tne previous month Sweden as a free state.
Austria seeing only 38 Russian Ships in Stockolm placed the Danish fleet in the sea zone around Copenhague.
Then the Swedish fleet poped up [;)] and helped the Russian fleet to defeat the danish one. The danish fleet then seeked refuge in a friendly port and asked at that moment that Prussia (Austria ally) opened a port to her ... to avoid the PP lost for being scuttled when Copenhague will fell.
Note : access was never asked or given before between the two allies (Austria and Prussia).

I still think that access must me given during the diplomatic phase to avoid those kind of issue and otherwise denied. But no need to discuss this to the end of the night [:D]

Titi -> RE: 1792 AAR (some large pics) (2/9/2006 3:51:34 AM)

Hi,

To continue the AAR, here is a brief summary of last friday.

The most interesting event of the next peaceful 9 months was the resign of the Spanish player. For the interst of the gaem we offered the country to the turkish player, but he refused, finding it more easy to continue the game with the "forgiving" feudals troops.

So Spain became an UMP. Four players were interested in it : Russia rolled a 6 DR that became an eight with the +1 for dominant and +1 for the alliance. Next one was Austria that rolled an 9 DR becoming an 11 with the +1 for Dominant also and a one VP bid. GB rolled then and also the dies give a 9 result but unmodified. The last to roll was the French and keep the entertainment by rolling a natural 11 but soon we remember to change it into a ten for the instability modifier.

Sp once became an active "satellite" of Austria, the troops gather on the french border quickly.
Otherwise in a surprising move, the Turk allies to Austria fearing apparently the new "alliance" of his two neighbours.

The center of interest is also slowing moving to the East : turkish feudals rising and gathering toward te border of Russia and then standing down in some kinf of great training manoeuvers. Austrian corps moving as quickly that a safe forage allows to the east of Vienna and then taking quarters there while the few austrian borders cities are filling to full capacities of infantries garrisons. In reply GB move an english corps to join the two polish ones at Warsaw and Russia create a cavalry corps near Kiev while moving a russian corps from stockolm to the same direction and a swedish corps in Kiev. The cossack making a light patrol along borderline with Austria and Turkey.
France slowly gather some corps on its east and med border and Prussia stayed gathered on Magdeburg and Berlin.

October 1794 will see the end of the forced peace between Austria and France and will probably see more action in the game ... but will it be before or after the winter [&:]

To be continued

Titi -> RE: 1792 AAR (some large pics) (2/21/2006 5:53:22 AM)

October 1794 saw the end of the truce following the French-Austrian war. But it worked as a reminder of all those young and fine men dead to save and extend the idea of the revolution to their eastern neighbors. No provocation or any incident was used or caused to launch the former enemies one against the other.
France had her troops on the south and east border, Austria had them partly in the Alps and North Italy ans partly in Moravia and Hungary. Russia was moving more and more corps from Scandinavia including some just formed Swedish ones. Prussia had them grouped at the cities of Magdeburg and Berlin. GB had them divided between home island, the 3 Hermanic provinces (Holland, Hannover and Hesse) and Poland in stack of 3 corps. Spain under an advice that only Austria see useful was transferring all the Neapolitan factors as Pyrenean garrison while Turkish was still doing some maneuvers with her feudal troops.

So the winter came with December and saw only two changes on the map : the feudals stand down ... again and the Russian regroup in west Galicia and a border zone just east of it.

The last but not the least event of 1794 was a change of the advisers standing around the Danish king. After a year used to build ships all around the country, the disband of the Neapolitan cavalry as garrison and the building of cavalry in excess of what the corps are able to hold; the king fired the Austrian counselors and hire some Russian one at a cost of 3VPs for Alexander. (Russia bid high ... having a future use for Spanish troops).

Diplomatically i will unveil some of the secrets of the 1794 negotiations. The Russian ambassador in Constantinople was often seen in discussion with the grand Vizier. He was carrying messages from the Tsar inquiring about the Turkish intentions in the event of a Russian declaration of war to decrease the political influence Austria has over all of Europe. The Vizier was stubborn and raise the Turkish/Austrian signed Alliance to proclaim that all declaration of war against Austria would be a declaration of war against Turkey and will see all the mighty Turkish army march in battle order to defend her ally even if the result would be to see Constantinople burning instead of Vienna.

Seeing that the Tsar convince the British and Spanish sovereigns that there is prestige to gain in defeating this Muslim foe and for Austria to lose by defending the target of this new crusade.
So January 1795 started by the Russian losing more than the benefit gained by the influence on Spain, Spain and GB losing some also by declaring war on Turkey.
Turkey followed the public advice of the Austrian emissary and called Austria to defend her only against Russia what Austria did and so lost the dominant status she had earned two years ago by victories over France.

The naval phase see mainly 2 corps leaving GB for Gibraltar, while Spanish and French fleets left the Atlantic toward the mare nostrum.
The land phase started by Russia decided to use the power of her treasury (GB is around 350$, Russia around 150$, Turkey around 85$ and the three others around 30$ while Sp is left with a low 12$) move forward at a cost of 24$ and besiege the two east towns of east Galicia while cossacks made scouting on the Turkish/Austrian border. But the two sieges were a complete failure (snake eyes rolled). The eastern one was besieged by one corp, the capital by 4 corps led by Fersen while the main part of the army is advancing to the west in west Galicia.
Turkish troops rush to counter this threat and at a great cost move forward by quickly creating two depots in cities and supplying a counter attack led by 4 corps and her best leader against the lone Russian corps and clearing the supply path with another corps. It cost her 26$!!!

It was with great disgust that the grand Vizier learned that this expected great victory turned into a costly defeat as the Turkish commander probe the Russian line while the Russian commander think he was a leader and choose an ordinary defense. The tactical advantage of superior leadership or superiority of cavalry can't even change this first bad decision and the Turk fled the battlefield before the end of the day broken by the vision of 2000 feudal dead even if on the other side 2000 militia and 2000 infantry men are buried by their Russian comrades. The Russian first corp had kept high the flag and claimed an unexpected victory. HURRAH; VODKA.

But the victory won't be acclaimed now in the Russian HQ tent as the Austrian counterattack is still to come.

Picture at the end of Turkish phase. The I Russian Corps still drunk and turned around while Turkish corps are on the process to be put back with the cavalry one that in Moldavia that just remove a cossack factor.

For Monadman, we had our second rule's interpretation when we settled that a corp without a leader counter can't have the bonus mentioned on the chit selection table (+1 morale for a defending side commanded by a Russian leader).

Can you explain what you mean please?

Having already saw a map look and smell like beer, i completly agree with the laminate map even if it's not mine and myself i cover it with four of five sheets of PVC.

You know when players became olders, theiry move are less clean [:D]

The war with Austria and Turkey will do nothing but strengthen France. I hope Spain and GB enjoy a more powerfull France.[sm=nono.gif]

The Austrian should place 6 corps under the command of Mack in the mnts n of Leopoldstadt and leave 1m "blocking" corps in Krakow and Olmutz. Mack would have the advantage of the mnt bonus for defense if attacked and since it is in Hungary he could also pop up the the Insurection corps. (That's an extra 30m & 6c). With the blocking corps Suvarov can't make and end run for Vienna. Suvarov has only two choices, he can either attack Mack in the mnts or move off to the west of Mack and strike at Vienna. The move on Vienna would force Mack to leave his mountain position. However, if Suvarov does choose to move past Mack then his supply line is danergously exposed. This would force him to either abandon the move on Vienna or leave several corps back to defend the supply line.

Titi -> RE: 1792 AAR (some large pics) (2/24/2006 5:45:40 AM)

Hi Hoche,

Sure the war against Austria and Turkey will strengthen France. But remember that France is last in VP, has used her two levée en masse and is reduced to home nation + Flanders with Baden as a free state. In two years, France as rebuild her corps and has more than one leader but is not yet an invincible opponent. On the other side, Austria is leading the game in VP and PP; has all her corps on map since a long time and is just filling home nation with full strength garrisons; and control all of Italy except Naples/Sicily with the Kingdom of Italy created and control half of the German nations. Last Austria is allied with Prussia and Turkey making life of Russia difficult. Only good point is Charles not yet available.
GB as Russia ally is probably enjoying taking PP over Turkey, while Spain is a Russian UMP this year ... after a year of control by Austria.

Lastly, your comment about Austria were straight to the point, and a good hindsight as the next months were already played. Unfortunately AAustria followed those little late.

Back to the AAR :

Austria began it's January 1795 turn by counterattacking with Mack and four corps the four Russian corps lead by Fersen besieging the East Galicia Capital. The battle took part in the forest area, while the starving garrison received order not to exit the city. Fersen knowing he had a tactical disadvantage and that his army has more militia than Austrian one, took some risk and place the four corps he had in a cordon stance.
Luck reward him for a time cause Mack ordered on the other side an Echelon attack. Whatever, the -1 on Russian die (tactical mod) and the +1 on Austrian die for cavalry superiority see both side finish unbroken the first day of combat, with nearly equal loses in men.
It was then that luck left poor Fersen, as he was the last casualty of his side when ordering the retreat toward West Galicia capital during the night. Doctors are predicting a two months convalescence.
February started by GB disembarking a corp in each of Cyrenaica and Tripolitain and later breaking trough the little garrison to conquer the two capitals.
Russia regroup and counterattacked the exposed force of Mack that just rebuild there loses by incorporating most of the city garrison. She move eight corps and Suvarov in the wood area while the three last corps in the area (one infantry (but what infantry...), one cavalry and a last just created from militia of Brest-Litovsk) move to the west of west Galicia keeping the newly depot just left by the last able Russian leader.
This time it was Mack that took some risk counterattacking against the Russian probe. But now Austria with the tactical inferiority and no more cavalry superiority saw here casualties growth against a opponent slightly helped by luck (Austria rolled 5, 3 and 1 with table becoming more and more lethal while Russia rolled 1, 5 and 5 with the same increase on the table). At the end of the day, both side left the battlefield broken, Suvarov going back from where he came still wondering how he forgot to take the guard corps with him in this battle and leaving 1000 cossacks and 5000 militia dead on the battlefield while Mack disband a corps at the end of the day losing more than 10 000 trained soldiers and had count on the sacrifice of 2000 guard grenadiers to save the day.
To finish, the heroic 6 000 men of the 1st Russian corps breached the Austrian wall and killed the 2 000 defenders of C...Witz.
So the bloodbath had continued, at the joy of Russia knowing than in the current strategical state, it was intolerable for Austria. Austria licking her wound retreated in the Hungarian mountains, leaving alone the 16 factors without a leader build around the Russian guard in the forest of West Galicia.
Turkish corps in the meantime walked back from where they came, while cossacks left Turkey.

March saw like the last month, intense diplomacy, but with few result to French request on Prussia or Turkish hopes to surrender conditionally to GB.
Russian troops took control of capital of East Galicia when after breaching the walls, the 2 000 defenders surrendered. Suvarov move to the step of Hungary while the returning Fersen missed the siege of the last East Galicia city.
Austrian Move still to be complete.

Bravo pour le compte-rendu! Pense à ne pas mettre des images trop larges, car ça oblige à jouer avec l'ascenseur horizontal à chaque début et fin de ligne, ce qui est pénible.

À bientôt à Paris!

(I'm just asking Thierry to shorten the width of the images and give him a rendez-vous in Paris to eat together te still warm hearth of the French consuls)
