Be sure to stay away from this island

RUPD3658 -> RE: If you plan to invade the Andamans... (2/9/2006 7:08:13 PM)

Why?[&:]

I have taken it before.

Mike Solli -> RE: If you plan to invade the Andamans... (2/9/2006 8:17:14 PM)

I took it in one of my PBEM. I love it. It gives me nice recon of the Indian Ocean.[:D]

Feinder -> RE: If you plan to invade the Andamans... (2/9/2006 8:18:59 PM)

He's got a link on "this island".

Pretty amusing story actually (sorta).

So that's why my strength is slowly decreasing there. And I thought it was a new bug.[:D]

The Andaman Islands were turned over to the Indian National Government of Chandra Bose - and technically were the only part of India that was "free" prior to Independence. Bose was officially recognized for the first time a few years ago - under a nationalist party government. Bose had been mayor of Calcutta (if I remember right) and was transferred to Japan by a German submarine during the war - sort of like sending Lenin to Russia. Japan did raise two Indian National Armies - the second one under Bose - but refused to allow them to fight in division sized units. There is some doubt Indian troops would have behaved well had it encountered such a formation. I have photographs of Indian Army troops having been shot (in numbers) by British soldiers even as it was. And the entire Congress Party was in prison - because it refused to endorse the war effort without a promise of independence. India is a subject largely ignored in WWII histories - but see Total War by Calvorocci et al.

Execution seems a just a *tad* bit harsh a penalty for illegal fishing.[:'(]

Iridium -> RE: If you plan to invade the Andamans... (2/10/2006 5:22:04 AM)

What suprises me the most is the fact that they still haven't been in 'contact' with the world, especially considering their geographic location. You'd think they would see all sorts of stuff; sea traffic, planes, etc. They must be really xenophobic to completely isolate themselves and ignore the rest of the world.

Maybe not. When "contact" threatens you with epidemics that could wipe out your entire tribe, the death penalty seems warrented. And it seems to have been effective, as the tribe is still there long after hundreds of other primative tribal groups have been ravaged or destroyed. The legitimate Tribal Government should have the right to decide what it's own laws will be. They don't tell us not to let murderers of with a handslap and a warning---why should we tell them not to execute tresspassers.

Actually given the odds these guys have beaten .. we should probably go draw several pints of blood from them to make serum - would probably cure half the diseases on the planet !!! [:D][:D][:D]

You say that as though they actually understand their situation. I doubt they even know what exactly transmits disease let alone how to stop the spread of it. If they are truely out of 'contact' with the world they would be extremely primative, merely killing "outsiders" is how I see it.

In light of this, I'll have to bombard this island with BBs and waves of level bombers in my game before I invade then...[:D]

I might actualy watch if they did that!

Mike Solli -> RE: If you plan to invade the Andamans... (2/10/2006 5:44:52 PM)

Maybe we should drop off a generator, some computers and a few copies of WitP. Come back a year later and how screwed up their culture is.[:D]

Mynok -> RE: If you plan to invade the Andamans... (2/10/2006 5:51:46 PM)

Heck, an integrated TV/VCR, generator and a year of the Oprah Winfrey show would be genocidal.

Only if I can cheer for the native tribe.

They might invite you for dinner.

Damn good deterrant though [;)]

Mynok -> RE: If you plan to invade the Andamans... (2/10/2006 6:41:29 PM)

In this case, it might be a deterrent to excessive drinking, not illegal fishing. [:D]

I'd say this is why they kill on sight now:

"In the 1980s and early 1990s many Sentinelese were killed in skirmishes with armed salvage operators who visited the island after a shipwreck. Since then the tribesmen have remained virtually undisturbed."

Going up against a helicopter with bows and arrows is like taking on a crowd of thugs armed only with a Derringer ("Ok! Who wants some?!"). Apparently, death is not a concept they struggle with. If they're that comfortable with their place in the universe, I'm rooting for them.

Bows and arrows vs. helicopter seems to be working out very well for the ground forces. After all, the helicopter did leave.

DeepSix -> RE: If you plan to invade the Andamans... (2/10/2006 11:49:25 PM)

Yeah, let's see... islanders 1, fishermen 0; islanders 1, chopper 0. GO tribe![:D]

crsutton -> RE: If you plan to invade the Andamans... (2/11/2006 12:33:39 AM)

Not as uncomman as you would think. My brother in law who works for National Geographic was involved with a team in the Amazon Basin that about ten years ago was making initial contact with the Koruba (tranlated means "head crushers") tribe. This was a stone age tribe that had virtually no contact with the modern world. The government of Brazil had set up a preserve for them but as loggers and fishermen pushed further up the river, the realized that contact was inevitable and was taking measures to protect them.

The tribe has killed a few outsiders-including one member of the Geographic team and the goal was to prevent any sort of retaliation. There are other remote tribes in the Amazon basin but this tribe has probably the least contact with modern society.

DeepSix -> RE: If you plan to invade the Andamans... (2/11/2006 12:42:20 AM)

Yes, if there's one place above water that's still full of the unknown, it would have to be the Amazon Basin. Seems like I remember an Anthro 101 lecture where the prof mentioned a tribe that lived on the western (?) border of Brazil. The name was not "Pima" (they're in the U.S.) but it seems like it was a similar sounding name. Maybe I'm confused -- but at any rate it was a similar situation. They're very remote from the "civilized" world and generally kill whomever's unfortunate enough to get too close.
