GaryChildress -> What Keijo Maru class? (2/12/2006 1:25:05 PM)

I did a search but found no mention of this topic.

If it weren't for the Keijo Maru class the Japanese would be seriously deficient in escort vessels at the start of the war. However from what I've discovered so far, there was no Keijo Maru class, only a single ship converted to a gun boat role. In RL it looks like most of the Japanese escort vessels came in the middle to late period in the war. How comes it that there are so many Keijo Maru class PGs in the game?

The makers of the game seem to have given the Japanese a lot of advantages that they didn't have in real life. Since the game gives the Japanese about 40% more transports than they actually started the war with, these were probably "invented" to escort them around.

I don't mind all these advantages. I'm a strong believer that the Japanese were doomed from the beginning. The only way any player can pull off the superhuman feats that the Japanese seem to accomplish is through these advantages the game gives them. But they are still doomed.

I found that this ship was one of 87 merchant ships acquired by the Japanese Navy prior to Pearl Harbor, and while they were all listed as ML's, at least 31 were listed as "gunboats".

FWIW I have actually found *many* ships which are NOT included in the game, so, I don't think there was any great conspiracy to "alter" the Japanese navy, just one to use the ships they could best use, (giving the limited space of the "slots".)
The CHS crew did fill all the slots in their mod, and the CHS person who researched these ships actually has a newer version of this book.(He is no longer working on CHS).

PLEASE NOTE: While these 80+ ships cannot be classified as a "class" of structural identity, they are considered a "class" by dates of procurement and purpose of use.
There are OTHER such cases of "classification".
This book is still attainable at Amazon.com, but not via Ian Allan......Search by book name and Author.
(Watts is world-reknowned, and for many years was an author editor for "Janes'").[8D]
