OBull -> How to burn an installable CD? (7/10/2000 8:03:00 PM)

So, I've downloaded spwaw-complete-21.exe, spwaw-update-22.exe, and spwaw-update-23.exe. I've installed the game and the updates (it plays well and looks like one of the games I've been looking for a long time). Now I'd like to give the game to my father and brothers and therefore I need to burn some CDs. In the ?:\MatrixGames\Steel Panthers World At War directory I see an autorun.exe which suggests that you could burn this directory to the CD and have the game start when the CD is insterted, BUT there is no setup.exe or anything that suggests that you can INSTALL the game from such a CD. So why have it on CD? I don't get it... Why is there a CD-label distributed when there is no CD to burn (not in the traditonal sense where you get to the setup-wizard when inserting the CD first time and into the game after installation has been done). As far as I understand everything needed must be on the hard-drive since there is no option to run it off CD. I just don't get it... Should I just burn a CD with the .exe's and .zip's I downloaded from the net or is there any other (better?) way to do it?

I noticed the same thing, but even though the file looks like an autoplay file for a executable CD, I really think the file is more like a "run.bat" batch file. All it does is start the WAW menu. I suppose you could burn all the unzipped files onto a CD, then you could run it from a CD, but you would have to change all the registry pointers, and autoexec.bat, config.sys and everything else that is telling the system that the files are on the hard drive. You would need to edit it so the system now knows they are all on a CD. It would be a BIG pain, I think. Jim

Thanx, and so I figured. I'll just burn what I downloaded.

Well guys let me explain this since I am the guy who made the install file. OBull you can just copy the whole game directory to CD and then copy it back to a hard drive. You can not play it off of the CD. There was a CD version of the whole download but I got ride of that for the current system. The CD Labels are there just incase you want to print out and label your CDR. I would copy the game directory and the Zips to be safe. David

Thanks David. Now I get it... :-) I'll stick to the original plan and burn the excellent files I got from the net (the .exes and .zips) and label it with the (very nice) label supplied. That will be just fine. BTW, thanks for an extremely nice game. As an old Squad Leader player (Avalon Hill board game, remeber?), I really appreciate this game. It's way beyond the Microsoft Close Combat series. The game mechanics is just what I've been looking for. Thanks again.
