rroberson -> Needs new game... (2/22/2006 9:24:59 PM)

...no I'm not quiting WITP...love that game. But Im looking for a new challenge. I have 50 bucks burning a hole in my pocket and would like to pick up a quality wargame. Any recommendations from you guys?

Nikademus -> RE: Needs new game... (2/22/2006 9:28:29 PM)

I have looked at WPO...but I question if its just more of the same WITP wise. I love the thought of big guns and all that, but having seen how this engine (love witp don't get me wrong) struggles to simulate things at times....I guess its I worry.

Nikademus -> RE: Needs new game... (2/22/2006 11:07:05 PM)

have you tried Combat Mission?

kellyc -> RE: Needs new game... (2/22/2006 11:11:48 PM)

While not a wargame per say....Galatic Civ2 just got released the other day (yesterday?). Stardock does a good job with support and patches etc.

Own all 3. THe first one remains my fave..I have dabbled with the 3rd alot...but the lack of a true campaign mode keeps me away.

What is crown of glory? (Civ 4 rocks but its beer and pretzels same with GGWAW).

Nikademus -> RE: Needs new game... (2/22/2006 11:35:28 PM)

i havn't picked up the third yet. hard to justify given how little i've played the first two. They are way neat....but Steel Panthers still tends to beat them out for me.

I really enjoy the we go...and then replay perspective of it. I like dabbling with the create your scenario mode alot (I should of so been a game designer). I am however one of those lovers of all things campaign...and the lack of that really causes me to lose interest in it quickly.

Honda -> RE: Needs new game... (2/23/2006 12:02:48 AM)

I'd go for Civ4. It's a great relaxation from WitP and easy to learn, more so if you are a civ veteran. Single player is interesting and a great challage (a cheater of course) at higher difficulty. The best part is, IMO, the multiplayer. If you have some friends (3 will do) you'll find it's as smooth as it gets. The game flow is fast since all players play their turns simultaneously. So only toilet and get-the-beer breaks in this game.

Oliver Heindorf -> RE: Needs new game... (2/23/2006 12:11:17 AM)

since you are a sim player as well ( like me ) try NASCAR 2003 Season from Papyrus/Sierra. Get a good wheel and pedals and you will have the best sim of a race game ever. you can join an online league and have league races. there are several mods released as well. But remember : Its a Simulation, not like the EA cheap kids games.

turn is up [;)]

Do I need to drink beer and say y'all alot [:D]

I owned their 2002 game...fun game...loved customizing my own car...don't think I ever won a race against the AI though :).

Nikademus -> RE: Needs new game... (2/23/2006 12:18:43 AM)

there's always a good game of Doom3.

play it at night...with all the lights out. [:D]

Speedysteve -> RE: Needs new game... (2/23/2006 12:24:07 AM)

Yup. Can't beat Doom 3 at night with lights off. Truly freaky at times.

Alternatviely on similar vein - Halflife 2?

I've just picked up Star Wars: Empire at War. Am loving it so far. Strategy but also tactical. If you like SW stuff you may like this.

Having said that Steel Panthers is a great WW2 tactical. Very realistic engine. Srill play it now and have done for a long time.

There's always Solitaire or Minesweeper [;)]

crsutton -> RE: Needs new game... (2/23/2006 12:47:21 AM)

HPS Campaign Series is still one of my favorites. Big beautiful maps and lots of units. They cover about a dozen battles now. Playing against the AI is boring but I love email games.

Steel Panthers or Starwars: empire at war.[:D]

2Stepper -> RE: Needs new game... (2/23/2006 2:55:16 AM)

Actually I'm going to investigate Empire at war myself. But WITP will stay on my box for gaming as desired. [8D]

Crimguy -> RE: Needs new game... (2/23/2006 4:15:49 AM)

ONe of these days COTA will be out.

Someday [>:]

If you haven't gotten it yet, Highway to the Reich is a great game. Some of the best AI out there. Just wish there were more maps and more varied OOB. Market Garden has been beaten to death.

grraven2004 -> RE: Needs new game... (2/23/2006 6:44:56 AM)

I also have been contimplating buying Empire at War as Darth Vader is my hero [&o][&o][&o][&o][&o]
A buddy of mine wants me to get civ 4 but I could never get the hang of civ 3 so its probably a waste of cash for me to get that.

bradfordkay -> RE: Needs new game... (2/23/2006 9:03:03 AM)

I've been trying to decide between HPS' First Blitzkrieg and Schwerpunkt's Anglo-German War '39-45.

The First Blitzkrieg appears to be the first in a series, which series will cover the whole war but TFB apparently doesn't - at least from what I read on their website and the Wargamer's review.

AGW '39-45 appears to have a full campaign, so is it the ETO version of WITP? It does include a very simplified naval aspect, but it cuts off the Iberian and African coasts (apparently, Ike's troops appear on teh western edge as reinforcements at appropriate times).

Papyrus put out a series of great racing sims. My favorites were Grand Prix Legends (1967 F1), NASCAR Legends (1970 - Superbirds, Daytona Chargers and Talladega Torinos), and NASCAR 2004. Another driving sim I have really enjoyed is Rally Trophy (great choice of cars).

I'll always remember the thrill of battling Richard Petty, David Pearson, Cale Yarbrough and Bobby Isaacs in NL. For a kid who grew up in the 60's and 70's in the southeastern US, these guys were gods. As an eleven year old kid I got to sit in Petty's driver's seat after the race. I don't think that I had a bigger thrill until I discovered sex...

GPL has a huge fanbase and has been modded to the extreme. Someone out out a GPL 1965 mod that uses the 1.5 litre formula of '65 - which cars are mmuch easier to handle than the 400hp 3.o litre cars of '67. I recently read that there are over 100 tracks available through the mods for GPL...

I got my copy through ebay for 1 EUR here in Germany.

GPL is still a blast.
