Is this a bug? Probably not... What it IS however is the first time in umpteen games where I've seen a sub get swatted by a DD group on the surface.

Sub attack at 63,81

Japanese Ships
DD Ikazuchi
DD Shikinami
DD Ariake
DD Yugure
DD Wakaba
DD Hatsuharu
DD Suzukaze
DD Shiratsuyu
DD Oshio
DD Arashi

Allied Ships
SS Cachalot, hits 3

Waiting for a feedback from my PBEM partner, but I suspect this was a bogus encounter. Despite my being the IJN player, I had a hard time believing that I was seeing this. [:D][X(]

Thoughts anyone?

Kamikaze sub? [:D]

IIRC subs that reach a certain damage level have to surface (are treated like surface combatants), so perhaps the first attack did enough damage forthe sub to be forced to the surface and into the guns of the second DD group.

When subs are out of torpedoes they will do a surface attack, instead of a submerged attack.
Providing they pass their exp/morale rolls.

And if sub commander is very aggressive, he'll often try surface night attacks (like in real war they often did). BTW, good way to get one's sub killed is to put very aggressive commander into inexperienced sub. Only after sub crew has 60+ exp one can expect that to be beneficial.

Nikademus -> RE: Amusing Combat result (1.795) (2/23/2006 4:00:33 PM)

yes. night time phase can feature sub attacks on the surface. Daylight phase can feature a surface attack by subs if no escorts are present.

This must have been nighttime with an aggressive commander on a damaged sub. It was surface based and it was nighttime. That, plus the damage I can think of no other reason why they'd have tangled on the surface with a 4 pack group of DD's.

Makes for a DEAD SS. [:D]

Nikademus -> RE: Amusing Combat result (1.795) (2/23/2006 8:07:58 PM)

damage does not force a sub to run surfaced. SYS damage reduces the chances for a sub to attack.
