THE EMPEROR'S LIGHTNING BOLT

PLEASE NOTE: There are two Versions of the scenario in this zip file. 001 is the easier version for beginners. 010 is a little harder for the well versed in the game.

Design: Wild Bill Wilder
bwilder@bellsouth.net

Testers: Bruce "Recon" Hodgman, Roland Rahn, Jack Withrow, Sherman "Trip" Triplett, Massimo "Mad Italian" Rocca

Design Notes:

This scenario should be played as the Japanese. As Major Shimada (the historical commander), you have a tough task ahead. You must break through the enemy's defenses on the north side of the Slim River and force your way to the south.

Will it be enough to overcome and take the field?

Two things are important to you as Shimada. You must avoid excessive loss of tanks. They are very valuable. You must take all the objectives to have a chance at a big win. The bridge is vital to the Japanese advance.

The final issue is time. You are being pressed hard by the divisional commander to get this one at once! Leisurely advance is not an option!

Historical Background:

The 11th Indian Division had suffered one defeat after another, gradually withdrawing to the south towards Singapore. The Japanese 5th Division with tank support was relentless in its pursuit.

The 12th Brigade held tenuous defensive positions along the Slim River, guarding its bridge. But by now, there was little fight left in what remained of the unit.

The Japanese planned another flanking maneuver, while tying up the defenders, but Major Iruku Shimada, commander of a tank company formally requested permission to make a major direct assault, break through the enemy with lightning speed, secure the bridge and move rapidly south.

The gods of war smiled upon Shimada and with an attached infantry company in lorries was given permission to lead the attack. At precisely 0900 Hours, Shimada shouted his war cry of "Banzai" from the turret of his T-97 Chi-Ha tank, slammed the side of his vehicle with his samurai sword and roared
forward leading the way.

Special Note: For those who want a greater challenge, read no further until after you play the scenario.

The Outcome: (Its in the Scenario)

Wow, another feast so soon after Deadly Diversion was released.

No sissy flanking moves or beating around the bush, just a manly charge straight at the enemy... my kind of battle tactics.

I'm never gonna get through the awesome Chosin campaign with all these goods interrupting. [:@][:)]

We thank you gentlemen. I do on behalf of this rather quiet group that talks little but works a lot. I'm the talker it appears. But I know that they appreciate your words of encouragement. I'll make sure that they see this.

Note to players: you need to change the scenario number on the files before putting them in your SCEN folder or they will overwrite other scenarios. Use number 369 or higher to avoid any clashes.

I played the harder version of this. As-per-usual another very interesting and challenging mission from The Wild Crew.

Here's what happened...

I sent my recon teams through the smoke and they were fired at by every man and his dog. The recon members who couldn't hack it faceplanted into the swamp and were forgotten while those still standing hollered for backup.

Type 97 Chi-ha tanks roared into the smoke and the first one was blown up by a big gun, the second was satcheled to death by some pissed off Indian blokes and the third was immobilized right in the middle of the dense jungle. Shimada smirked and grunted, "Glad I got out of that silly tank before they charged in."

Next my infantry poured through to get revenge for the one-sided battle so far and a general shoot-out developed with lots of soldiers on both sides starting careers in pushing up fresh swamp vegetation. Shimada forget to adjust his mortarfire and landed some rounds on his own men which didn't do much for their mood. A tag team of two Indian squads hiding in the jungle foilage foiled my northern advance by massacring several Japanese A squads so badly they were too impotent to continue the fight. One fresh Japanese squad rocked up with 11 members and was reduced to 3 without firing a single shot in return.

The battle roared and bellowed and finally some newly arrived Type 97 Chi-has gave the Japanese a well earned breakthrough. Indian soldiers were butchered by pointblank cannon and machinegun fire and the wounded were finished off by tanks driving back and forth over them.
Three tanks put their pedals to the floor and gunned down the road. After a brief exchange of fire with enemy defenders fortified near the river, two of Shimada's tanks were snuffed out by cannonfire while a bomber knocked around the third so badly that the crew needed to come out of the tank for some fresh air and to be machinegunned to death.

The enemy heavy machinegun near the river chopped up the Japanese soldiers running pellmell towards the river to save the surviving tank crews. Losses were heavy. Add to this artillery fire suppressed Shimada's infantry which pinned them in place forcing them to waste time trying to dig into the open ground using their helmets while more of them succumbed to the enemy fire. Shimada shook his head and snorted, "Those rookies just ain't manly enough to be on my team. Best the river washers (*japanese slang for indians*) finish them up."

Back in the jungle where the initial shootout had occurred, the indian tag team was still busily ambushing 5 different Japanese squads dishing out even amounts of pain to each in fairness. The Japanese threw their 10 yen coins around, tugged on palm branches and prayed to shinto that something would come and save them from their agony in the brush. Their prayers were answered immediately by a huge British bomber which plastered the area without any mercy afforded anyone. At least 4 Japanese squads were instantly shredded to death and the imobilized tank was doing flips in the air during the rain of steel. The jungle grew quiet and dark now that only one brutalized squad of 3 survivors made their way to sunlight. One badly hurt enemy indian squad also survived and broke out of the jungle to try and run for safety only to be machinegunned to death by the frustrated Japanese soldiers who were making their way to the river. It was good for the boys to have that tidbit.

Two Japanese tanks still left operational rode around mopping up the bad guys around the river while the few surviving recon troops provided suppression fire from the opposite bank. All the objectives were draped in the Japanese flag by turn 8 and the rest of the mission was spent searching for hidden objectives and shooting up the enemy mortar teams. The indian force morale broken on about turn 9.

Next I will post the scoreboard picture. I didn't post any battle pictures to avoid revealing enemy positions to new combatants reading this battle report.

Here is the scoreboard. I got a draw despite getting all the objectives and killing every bad guy we could find but I reckon its cause the Japanese took heavy losses as well. Both sides got mauled but a good time was had by all. [:)]

Excellent report, TokyoBoy! You did okay. I won't comment on what I consider a winning strategy although you pretty well followed it.

The easier version is just that, and a decisive is very possible. On the other hand, this one presents more difficulties for the Japanese. True, it is not an easy but a challenging fight and one that affords the player the opportunity to play it more than once to decipher what is needed to take it all the way.

Sounds like you had fun. I had fun reading this fine AAR.

PimpYourAFV -> RE: New Batle from the Wild Team (3/4/2006 2:11:12 AM)

To tell you the truth, I was concerned about the spartan time limit and the orders of urgency in the text info so my battlegroup charged into the fight without any regard to losses or tactics. Considering I actually took the objectives early means I most probably would have done better not putting the pedal to the floor, and instead try to sniff out the bad guys in an orderly manner.

I will try again with a little less hurry and try to stop for some curry.

Wild Bill -> RE: New Batle from the Wild Team (3/4/2006 6:47:08 AM)

Wise move. If you move using your infantry as a shield for the tanks till later in the game, you'll still have time to do what you have to do. A headlong rush, such as Shimada himself chose, could end in real problems. Let me know how you do this time around.

The tanks are very expensive and will eat up your victory points if you lose them.
