Well - got the itch to play with my toy soldiers again, v8.403 has peaked my interest. Have also decided to try the Depot Mod v2.

My planned core for the Germans is a Motorized Rifle Company, a Heavy Weapons attachment, and a section each of Light Panzers & Support Panzers.

So ... how much and what kind of Recon should I purchase to maintain some semblence to historical accuracy?

Is this a long campaign? I've thought about German Recon in this format, and to be historical, you'd give yourself maybe 4 or 8 armored cars, two groups of Recon guys in scout cars, and two platoons of motorcyclists.

One thing that I did in my personal OOB set is this: in the early war , say 1939-40, armored cars operated in pairs, with a 231 and a 221. So I created a mixed AC section with these two.

Deep recon in SPWaW is kind of a thorny issue, so I uparm my recon groups to something more approaching deep RAIDING elements. The recon infantry squads are upgraded to panzergrenadiers or engineers in halftracks. The Motorcycle Troops are a sticky problem when it comes to upgrades. Still haven't figured it out.

The armored car upgrades are pretty straightforward.

These are generalized guidelines, but what is their battlefield role? What do you want them to do?

Yes - the generic WWII (Long) Campaign. Their role? Forward reconnescience, pretty much not getting ahead of the group, maybe a hex or two ahead to draw fire/spot the enemy. With a core this small, I've decided I need a little dedicated recon, just not sure how much would be appropriate.

I'm thinking maybe two Scout or Fusilier attachments, as I think three would be ahistorical. Trying to not use MC units, feeling they're more suited to Auxilliaries. Same with AC's.

As it stands, one infantry company supported by a platoon of mixed light/support AFVs seems logical. Not sure if the Heavy Weapons attachment is too much, but I like the toys (2 MGs, 3 ATRs & 3 Light MTRs).

Again, just not sure of the amount/type of Recon that would be appropriate.

I've found that having motorcycle recon can be extremely useful. They can keep up with your panzers, they can be used as a small but highly mobile reserve on defence and they can make fast penetrating incursions on the flanks (and sometimes get to those deep VHs just in the nick of time [:)]).

I find that inpregnating the force with attached reeci and maybe a couple of FO's between each of the arms, like one recci doing questionmark patterns say 6 hexes in front of my overall HQ, and a squad or patrol attached to my engineers CO. HQ, and one to lead your heavy support Arm, and a motorcycle squad to escort the infantry CO. HQ.
That way your giving extra eyes to the forward elements of the whole force. RT
AND lets not forget about all those wonderful radios that this would spread threw your whole force in direct contact, right beside their relivent HQ's [X(] SOUNDS JUICY TO ME !!
