i believe the carriers at Midway have been found as well.

zuikaku -> RE: IJN wrecks (3/14/2006 5:20:22 PM)

I think that only part of the Kaga's hull have been found till now...

Brady -> RE: IJN wrecks (3/14/2006 5:30:51 PM)

They found a Bunch of Japanese Sub's recently, the operation deadlight group off Japan. They also found recently I beelave a Type 400 Boat off Hawai, and one of the Midgits used in the Pearl harbor atack.

Ballard also found several Japanese ships in Iron Bottom sound, I have the book cool picks.

Truck Lagoon is full of Japanese ships as well.

There was a Robert Ballard TV special a few years back where they went to Guadlcanal and found some of the deep-water wrecks there. This includes the Kirishima, which is lying belly-up on the floor of the "Slot" west of Savo Island

Nikademus -> RE: IJN wrecks (3/14/2006 5:31:24 PM)

Yes, a portion of Kaga's upper hanger structure was found (with a couple AA tubs still attached as well as a night landing aid assembly)

Other wrecks found include:

Yamato
Musashi?
Kirishima
(at least one DD in Iron bottom Sound)

I'm hoping Midway gets revisited sometime again in the next decade.

mlees -> RE: IJN wrecks (3/14/2006 5:33:33 PM)

Apparently "Iron Bottom Sound" is quite the tourist resort now...

Przemcio231 -> RE: IJN wrecks (3/14/2006 5:36:09 PM)

Some CA's were found also...

zuikaku -> RE: IJN wrecks (3/14/2006 5:40:39 PM)

is there any page with informations on all these wrecks?

WhoCares -> RE: IJN wrecks (3/14/2006 5:42:35 PM)

I once found a nice wreck diving site with maps, photos and videos; doing a quick search again now, this one might be the one I found back then: Link: Shipwreck Central

zuikaku -> RE: IJN wrecks (3/14/2006 5:47:06 PM)

Thanks a lot for the information. I've been searching something like that. With more than just general details[&o]

rtrapasso -> RE: IJN wrecks (3/14/2006 5:48:04 PM)

might want to check this out, though...

EDIT - i tried finding more info on this, without luck. IMO, this info is suspect...

rtrapasso -> RE: IJN wrecks (3/14/2006 5:50:10 PM)

Not sure if this counts, but according to the site, Nagato is also around:

"On 28 July 1946 the underwater bomb Able was detonated; Nagato received only a little damage in this explosion. Two days later Baker was released and Nagato sank shortly after in the deep at the Bikini atoll. The wreck of Nagato rest in a good condition in deep waters..."

EDIT: THis one is real.
"Today, the Nagato rests upside down in 180 feet of water. The 708 foot long hull is intact, and rests on the ship's massive superstructure. This allows access to all four of her twin 16" turrets, which did not fall off when the ship capsised, as is often the case. The bridge snapped off when she settled, and it laysnext to the rest of the wreck, giving divers the oportunity to swim where Yamamoto stood when he launched the Pearl Harbor attack. The water is warm, with plenty of ambient light. Nagato is, without a doubt, the best battleship dive in the world."

There are some photos of her, also.

It could be a fantastic sight swimming next to two headed sharks, 12 armed octopusses and other underwater mutants. [:D] Or arent there any in Bikini?

Nikademus -> RE: IJN wrecks (3/14/2006 6:37:58 PM)

Whenever you enter the ocean....your entering the food chain. I couldn't quite expouge that thought while i was on vacation in Hawaii.

Speedysteve -> RE: IJN wrecks (3/14/2006 6:38:39 PM)

I hate sharks.......

Pictures of Kaga wreckage at www.combinedfleet.com

BLUESBOB -> RE: IJN wrecks (3/15/2006 1:52:53 AM)

The wreck of the Quincy was found on the same expedition that located the Kirishima. What was interesting from photos taken of the wreckage was how torn to absolute hell from shells the bridge area was. I was a quartermaster in the U.S. Navy and I would have hated being on that bridge.
