zuikaku -> WITP AI vs. Pacific war AI (3/17/2006 2:01:30 PM)

Never played WITP on very hard settings until now, but some things are rather annoying. Especially the AI's inabillity to properly react "if you are not playing historically". I don't mean about those turn 1 teleportations, but about taking the allied bases which were not historically taken. thatway, if I dig in Jamshadespur, the AI will not react at all. If I take Midway, the AI will never trie to retake it. An, if Japan takes Noumea the AI freezes. I think that it's impossiple that they programmed AI in such a stupid way[:@]. Shouldnt AI raid the forward bases (no matter are they on historyline, or further), and occasionally trying to surprise attack less defended rear areas. At least that was the case in the "Pacific war" which was programmed more than 10 years ago by the same man. I find it impossible (and rather dissapointing) if they have downgraded AI in such a way[:@] I mean, this is a game, and why shouldn't we be able to try to overextent ourselwes risking to get our a***s kicked. Instead, the AI freezes. I played "Pacific war" a lot, and such things didn't happened.
So, if anyone has a lot of games vs. AI, please send me yours experiences. I really don't have time to play PBEM games, so, I'm stuck with the AI. And ,therefore, I hope it's capable of reacting to my "nonhistorical" operations [:)]
THX in advance

Well simple solution stop playing the AI and start playing with a real opponont[:D]

zuikaku -> RE: WITP AI vs. Pacific war AI (3/17/2006 2:12:15 PM)

Don't really have that much time. I play WITP very irregulary, often with a week or two long gaps. I'd like to play it every day, but it's a time buster [;)] And all the people here seems to be a PBEM fans[&:]

Well, if you check the plans after release of 1.8, Don & all hope to try to make some AI enhancements too, IIRC.

From J. Wilkerson:
"This being said, the idea would be to have the "AI" scriptable, so that it can be changed and enhanced by developers and modders alike. But being able to test the software through many days or months or even years of play absolutely requires an AI. Otherwise we would never live long enough to test much of what needs to be tested, manually. And note that we would expect to spend a significant chunk of time of this "test harness" ( a.k.a. "AI" ) as this is really the only way we can adequately test a game of this size ... and to put out a game of this size without adequate testing would not be on our agenda."

Amazing number of folks on the forums are from your country. Two found they were next door neighbours! PBEM is great if you can find someone in the same time zone. I play one guy (Bill Whitaker) and we do at least 2 turns a day (morning and night). I love doing a turn over a coffee in the morning before the day starts. We are in August 42 after only starting in Dec/Jan.

One thing about the Allied AI that irritates me is; When they are transiting Carriers...they alway make a beeline for the base it's assigned to. This always takes them within striking distance of my LBA. Sure killing carriers in the begining is fun but not this cheap way.

Sardaukar -> RE: WITP AI vs. Pacific war AI (3/17/2006 3:13:17 PM)

Yea, Allied AI especially is crappy. IJ AI does bit better job in early war...mainly because Allies have not much to throw against in in few first months.

Did this in PacWar too. Amazing that such a flaw was released again. Air Zones of Control influencing a decent movement model would have helped. This happens to TFs in PBEM games too (one constantly has to check for the retard/Timmy factor) and is very frustrating if you miss a TF and it is running straight into the Marshalls on it's way to OZ. Use Andrew Browns Map. Having Panama, Bora Bora and Maldives are such a help. You can set CS convoys between these points (I babysit them however to save on load/unload requirement) and not worry about Timmy sending your TFs off to the slaughter house like cattle in a run.

AI However can react very agressive sometimes....
In my actual game the allies take Bonin without problems with a RCT and return to PH.
A few weeks after, the japanese launch a huge force, with the KB, agaist the island and re-take her.

Actually I prefer to play Japan in PBEM. Being in Eastern US my preference would be for a West coaster. That way I can do a turn in the evening. Go to bed and hopefully have a turn in the morning when I wake up.

It's not such problem with transiting carriers. Problem is that the AI knows positions of LBA bases, and then sends week AC TFs to transit between them. after he loses one, he just sends another in the same way. Then, I have to stand down my aircrafts to prevent AI from being slaughtered. Why is avoiding enemy bases filled with LBA so hard for AI?
And what's more frustrating, when the AI has a lots of shipping, LCUs and strong warships, it does nothing, just sits. At the same time, half of my forvard bases are undefended. Thet's just insane, knowing that AI "knows" everything about my movements on harder levels.
I enjoy playing this game very much, but something is seriouslu wrong with the AI. It should be agressive, but not stupid (sending unescorted CVs as reinforcements). Obviously, landings in India and/or Noumeia will freeze the AI.[:@]
