Wild Bill -> The Hoss has Arrived! (3/18/2006 6:08:09 PM)

HERE COMES THE HOSS!**
April 9th, 1945*
Kakazu West, Okinawa*

http://www.wargamer.com/gamesdepot/details.asp?sid=4264

Campaign-Coordinator: Wild Bill Wilder**

Testing Team: Bruce "Recon" Hodgman, Roland Rahn, Jack Withrow, Sherman "Trip" Triplett, Massimo "Mad Italian" Rocca**

My special thanks to these fine men for the generous use of their talents and tenacity**

Note: When reading the text, do not click on -Go On-, but instead the little arrow at the bottom right of the screen you see here to read the entire text. Then you are ready to begin the campaign.**

This campaign is based on the historical attack headed up by Company L, 3rd Battalion, 383rd Regiment of the US Army 96th Division.**

It consists of two battles. The first is the assault on Kakazu West. If you are successful (a minor or decisive victory), then you will proceed to the second battle, which can be a fighting withdrawal or a hold your ground battle.**

This was what actually transpired on that fateful day. It was the beginning of a long and bloody struggle to break the Japanese Shuri Defense Line that led to the southern tip of Okinawa.**

As for units, you should pick 3 US Army rifle platoons and what support units you can add. Of course the choices are up to you.**

Can you take the "Hoss's" role as Company Commander and do as well? Whatever you have left at the end of the first fight is about all you'll have for the second one. Mitchell received no reinforcements. Japanese artillery created a wall of steel that isolated and badly hurt Company L.**

So remember to try not to lose too much of your force in the first fight or you won't have much of a chance in the second one.**

Historical Background**

On April 9th most of the United States Army's 383rd Regiment of the 96th Division was poised to attack. The 1st Battalion would tackle Kakazu Ridge, the 3rd, led by Company L, would take on a smaller rise to the northwest known as Kakazu (pronounced "Cock-a-zoo") West.**

Company L scurried quickly up the smaller height without incident. 1 Lt. Willard F. Mitchell, a bulky, muscular man known as "the Hoss", led the company.**

With fixed bayonets and his hoarse voice thundering his favorite battle cry, "Here comes the 'Hoss,' and God's on the Hoss's side!" his men took over the top of Kakazu West.**
It was only a moment, however, until the hill came to life with enemy small-arms fire and charging Japanese. All of Company L became involved in a series of close combat encounters.**

The fighting continued all morning, while Lieutenant Mitchell, with his booming shouts and presence everywhere, continued to encourage his men. To the GIs of Company L, it was quickly becoming a nightmare without end. But they held their ground.*

Here Comes the Hoss Fight Commentary

There wasn't enough cash to buy a rifle company so we purchased 3 rifle platoons, 2 snipers and a quad 50 truck.

Hoss formed his grunts into Army Groups West & East. The West has one platoon and a sniper while the East hogged the rest of the goods. We decided a direct frontal attack would be the smart thing to do... NOT.

Army Group West did well and only lost the sniper in the initial assault up the hill and cooked off 2 enemy positions and pulled into the enemy trench for a quick breather.

Group East suffered a steady stream of casualties from enemy fire before reaching the trench. Three caves total were blown up but a very, very bad ass japanese infantry squad, dubbed 'the Turtles', bonzai attacked 7 times in a row making mincemeat out of the grunts. Smoke foolishly dropped around the enemy squad by retreaters gave the enemy a free smokescreen all around their entrenched position. Not one shot had been returned to the turtles.

Hoss ordered several units to flank around the trench and try to come in behind the Turtles. The quad 50 truck was ambushed and immbolized while incoming 81mm mortarfire convinced the crew to come out and be shot like real men.

Lt. Mitchell 'the Hoss' was an honest man. He reported his casualties by radio exactly as they happened, every ugly detail. The report came in just as the news for the day was being gathered and sent to newspaper publishers in allied nations round the globe. The front page had the headlines "America's Dieppe in the Pacific". Stalin was rumored to have had a good chuckle over his morning coffee when he saw this.

Fighting continued and the grunts managed to grab the objectives while the Turtles were finally brought under effective pointblank fire. After being shot up badly, the insolent survivors jumped on the backs of the nearby grunts to ensure other squads would stop firing at them. The 2 squads shot literally pressed gunbarrels and bayonets into each others bellies until finally the Turtles went to meet the ancient Minamotos. What a mess. American dead lay about the hill infront of the trench, in the trench, behind the trench and even underneath the fallen Turtles.

The Japanese holding the objectives were slowly but surely ground up under a crossfire from both army groups whilst continuing to suffer casualties during the assault. Enemy mortarfire was becoming as usual as the monsoon rains in midsummer. After a bitter fight, the objectives were secured and defensive arrangements prepared.

The grunts settled themselves into the Japanese sandbag positions and broke out their C-rations for a well deserved dinnerbreak. The Japanese apparently had no tolerance for slack behaviour in the middle of a fight. Japanese infantry snuck through the palm trees and struck a grunt squad wiping out all 7 members in one bayonet charge. An echo of "Uck!!!" from Lt. Mitchell resounded across the whole island and it was speculated to be the first time anyone had ever heard Hoss cuss. After the war, Hoss neither denied nor admitted there was a letter missing from the beginning of the utterance. Some say the brave, honest warrior was at odds with himself.

The Japanese infantry also slammed into other squads inflicting moderate casualties while being completely dispatched themselves. After the enemy attack was repulsed, the grunts moved through the smoke to finish off the odd man here and there left alive. Astonishly these single man 'armies' ambushed and pushed back whole squads of grunts and had to be repeatedly attacked to put them down properly. One witty G.I. smirked that perhaps we would have been more properly equipped with wooden stakes than rifles and BARS.

One squad and a sniper pushed on and wiped out two 81mm mortars. With the mortarfire finally snuffed out, some survivors of the quad 50 actually got back in their truck. Unfortunately they had no expertise in changing tires so the truck remained immobilized.

Wild Bill gonged the bell signalling the end of round one. Up on the scoreboard was chalked a decisive victory with 53 grunts dead versus 131 Japanese smitten as well as 4 artillery. Oddly enough, it also indicated 3 enemy planes had been lost as well. No planes had been seen so it is assumed 3 kamikaze planes flew themselves into the swirling smoke of the fight to add to the chaos. Well, it was a public party so they were welcome to join.

We are congratulated on a superb job and next up we are ordered to hold against a mob hitting our left flanks. We are short one rifle squad and a sniper going into the round two. We look forward to another good fight. [:D]

Fight on, Gentlemen. You should be able to purchase three US Army Rifle platoons and 2 60mm Mortars. Those were my choices. They worked well enough that I was glad to have them.

In my first play I got a draw. You are right. Head on attacks are tough! And costly.

The second time around I got a decisive. I was feeling pretty good, like you TOkyo Boy. But then I got into the second fight, hold or leave? Hard choice. You might be able to win either way but it won't be as easy as the first one.

"EASY HE SAYS? WHAT EASY?!"

Wild Bill

PimpYourAFV -> RE: The Hoss has Arrived! (3/19/2006 8:33:44 AM)

I did the second fight. We stayed and held our positions. The enemy temporarily took one objective during the big push. I didn't take it back right away cause there was too much smoke and we wanted to avoid being ambushed. We counterattacked at the end after all the enemy were mopped up, hoping to reach the mortar and snuff it out as revenge for the shooting at us, but it ended. Often my battles seem to end one turn early with no morale breaks, like on 12 instead of 13. Is that usual?

Scoreboard: 1 decisive victory and 1 marginal victory on the 2nd battle

2nd battle we lost 25 dead to 428 enemy dead
Total campaign we lost 78 dead to 559 enemy dead, 4 arty, and 3 planes.

The big dude told us we lost a lot of dudes but he said we did good. I thought we had relatively low casualties as I'm used to having like 50% or more of the enemy losses. It was a good fight.

forgorin -> RE: The Hoss has Arrived! (3/19/2006 9:57:41 AM)

Hi. I redid it and did much better. 2 victories this time. I had 3 platoons and one scout car. The car got taken out at the beginning and never returned!

I attacked like the Zulus of southern Africa. The horns of the mighty bull. The horns (platoons) on either side swooped in and took them out while the head kept their attention buy charging head on and getting slaughtered!

The second fight went much better. We stuck around and kicked some #$^ this time. With 15 dead and wounded to their 445! Over all 79 Americans went to meat their forefathers and 553 of tenacious enemy will never be heard from again!

Wild Bill -> RE: The Hoss has Arrived! (3/19/2006 6:06:32 PM)

Well yes, you did very good! 78 casualties out of a company of 140-150 men is about 40%, nearly one have the complement. That would be considered high. Of course you had a 4 to 1 ratio on the Japanese which is very good.

All in all, you did quite well.

Wild Bill

PimpYourAFV -> RE: The Hoss has Arrived! (3/20/2006 2:46:29 AM)

7:1 [;)] Ya, losing half my dudes would not look so good to the bigwigs back in their offices. My result though is unusually good for me cause in my French campaign in North Africa on small maps we actually fought to the very last man over a year cause I had no more points to repair my units and the superbeefed enemy (9 to 1 odds) was getting stronger with unit upgrades while I had no tanks since the 3rd battle when Germany blewed the few I had up and I had no cash for repairs. I had to spend my dollars on infantry and AT guns. We did get 4:1 to 6:1 ratios even though we were losing most of the battles so it was fun. I'm going to try the Italians next and see how long they last for.

forgorin, I lost one man less and killed 6 more than you. Haha!! Weakling, bow before your master! [:'(][:D]
