Hi, Good Idea.....Anyone have "Campaign for North Africa"?

Mike Solli -> RE: Origins (4/8/2006 6:52:30 PM)

Raises hand.[:D]

Mike Solli -> RE: Origins (4/8/2006 6:53:50 PM)

I love that game. My long time boardgaming partner and I tried it. We got into the second opstage. It was doomed before we started. College, living 150 miles apart, playing by snail mail.....

I never get beyond reading the rules and admiring the rest of it. Still unpunched.

If I ever play it again, I'll automate the volumes of paperwork required. Actually, I started to do that. Don't have the time to finish though. WitP sucks all my free time and then some.[:D]

mogami -> RE: Origins (4/8/2006 10:19:46 PM)

Hi, The first thing we do is steal enough trucks to motorize a few regt of infantry. The rest legs it back towards our main supply port. The idea is to prevent a rout of Berti's 10th Army. (A Sir Robin while we wait for Germans to arrive)
It takes quite a bit of work to unscramble the mess the Axis start with. (about 2 cases of Pilsner Urquell )
Then we need to arrange the stockpiling of material and prepare forward bases. (All the while holding the Brits at bay)
It is vital to maintain air superiority. (At least 1 full time air commander)
I like to stick to managing logistics while others define and execute strategy

Surprise, surprise. Actually, I like the logistics in CNA too. That and the air game. Back when I last played it (late 70s, early 80s) I tried to figure out a logistics plan for the Axis. I don't believe the Axis can transport everything they receive in their ports to the front with the trucks they begin with.

If I remember correctly, the Allied player is in even worse shape.[:D]

mogami -> RE: Origins (4/8/2006 10:40:20 PM)

Hi, The Allies can motorize enough infantry to support the armour they start with. They get the better formations before the Axis does and if the 10th Army is left hanging the Brits can bite off bits at a time. The Axis pose no threat early on so the Allies can use their supply to maintain little offensive pokes that they then attempt to exploit as newer formations arrive.
Historically is was the transfer of formations from western Desert to Crete and Greece that provided the hole for Rommel to exploit. It's hard to catch the Allies in the same condition in CNA. The Axis really has to count on reformed 10th Army units as time goes by. You cannot win CNA without the Italians.

Mike Solli -> RE: Origins (4/8/2006 10:46:01 PM)

I agree with you Mog. When we started, we got through the first half of the first op stage and had to restart. I (Axis) won the roll and got to move first and closed with and trashed the 7 Armored. Granted I took heavier losses than him, but the Italians have people to spare. We had to restart and give the first turn initiative to the Allies to give them a chance to run.

The one concern with your idea is the requirement to move a significant portion of the Italian troops into Egypt.

mogami -> RE: Origins (4/8/2006 10:58:53 PM)

Hi, No the bulk moves towards the rear. They need a lot of reorganizing. What stays to watch the Allies is that small portion that can be motorized.

Mike Solli -> RE: Origins (4/8/2006 11:03:15 PM)

Then I must be getting my games confused. The Gamers DAK requires a certain amount of the 10 Army to move into Egypt.

mogami -> RE: Origins (4/8/2006 11:24:32 PM)

Hi, To start with you have this large herd of untrained under equipped leg infantry supported by WWI horse drawn or immobile arty with a few odds and ends of light tanks and armored cars. Historically they were ordered to invade eygpt and they moved between 10 to 40 miles and had to halt to wait for supply. while thus over extended they were tore to pieces and then devoured in a rout back to Libya. Most of the formations were destroyed in the process.

I always just cut out this fiasco by moving the bulk back to safety and diggin in while I sort out the units and reform them into more streamline and mobile formations.

Some one has to mind the store against the 10-20k Allied mobile troops that can be disposed for action by the Allied player. Most Allied players expect to be the hounds after the hares and can run into ambush situations where they are suprise by the fighting quality of the Italian troops. (They are quite good when properly supported and not too much is required of them)

Right from the very first you collect trucks and motorize a flying arty unit as well as mortor machine gun anti tank and finally supporting infantry and engineer units. Adding in the various tank and armor car units you have a rather cumbersome Tank division. The good news is it is more effective then the Allied players are willing to concede before meeting it along the coast.

Use the regular infantry early on (The CCNN can provide good troops after they have refitted) I don't stick to the historic formations. I assign a HQ and a leader and then attach units as required. don't panic and don't hurry. (but go as fast as practical)
The 10th Army can be a good Army and provide a solid infantry mass to later operations and a major factor in the mobile formations the Germans will require for the major operations in the campaign. There is no excuse to lose it as fast as historically. (It was pretty much just thrown away)

everything you lose early must be replaced later. everything you save early means that much less required to transport.
ever notice the railroad that runs along the coast? ever notice that a railroad can also be a pipeline for water? (or fuel)
There is a suitable foundation for a logistical network in North Africa but it takes time to organize it.
