I got to serve with (not on) USS New Jersey ("Big J") - I was present when she first fired practice shots off San Clemente Island and also when she first fired in anger off the DMZ - both re her 1968 reactivation for Viet Nam. From a distance of a mile or two, she is very pretty.

I also got to serve with (not on) USS Newport News - before she lost a gun in an explosion. She was flagship, Atlantic Fleet when I was there, and often was a fire support ship for exercises at Vieagus. Later, she went to Viet Nam (we did that together separately as it were) - and she set the all time record for heavy fire per unit time there.

I regard both ships as beautiful. I suppose the Newport News is slightly prettier - being less "fat" - particularly from astern.

irishman -> RE: Somewhat OT - The most beautiful warship (in your opinion) (3/31/2006 2:15:10 AM)

Best looking ship? There is no competition, the Kirov class Battlecruiser! The most powerful non aircraft carrier ever built! Pure class!

trojan58 -> RE: Somewhat OT - The most beautiful warship (in your opinion) (3/31/2006 3:05:11 AM)

For style and grace

1. Zara class CA's
2. Littorio class BB's
3 Agano class CL's

for raw power

1. Yamato class
2. Iowa class

jwxspoon -> RE: Somewhat OT - The most beautiful warship (in your opinion) (3/31/2006 3:58:56 AM)

DDG-78, USS Porter

USS Porter <<<----- Link to pic

Mike Scholl -> RE: Somewhat OT - The most beautiful warship (in your opinion) (3/31/2006 6:05:14 AM)

For the WW I era, I like the German BC Hindenburg. Long clean lines gave her a much more modern look that most of her contemporarys

For the WW II era, the Iowa's. Yamato's might have edged them out except for those goofy-looking armored hanger openings aft. The Iowa's "lines" are virtually perfect stem to stern with a wonderful balance and a look of speed. Though I still believe the SoDak's were the most "Battleship" looking BB's ever built,,,. squat and powerful and bristling with guns.

bradfordkay -> RE: Somewhat OT - The most beautiful warship (in your opinion) (3/31/2006 7:22:03 AM)

My choices, no pics...

1. Gneisenau/Scharnhorst WW2
2. Alaska/Guam
3. Bismark/Tirpitz
4. Hood (1919 form, not 1940)
5. Roma class WW2

non-dreadnought era ships?
Kirov
USS Constellation (the "Yankee Racehorse", not the carrier)

Iridium -> RE: Somewhat OT - The most beautiful warship (in your opinion) (3/31/2006 7:38:40 AM)

Iridium -> RE: Somewhat OT - The most beautiful warship (in your opinion) (3/31/2006 7:48:12 AM)

OK, for the modern era I choose Nimitz class, CVN Ronald Reagan in this case (using it's sprinkler system).

Yeah it is. Unfortunately modern warships are boring and blaaaaaaa....they are missing a certain something.[:(] Like modern cars...almost all look the same and have no reason to be polluting our air. I'm OK with a classic, but not these wimpy little shopping carts on wheels that spew caca into the heavens.

Curty -> RE: Somewhat OT - The most beautiful warship (in your opinion) (3/31/2006 1:46:21 PM)

Its the "not the boat race!"[:D]

Curty -> RE: Somewhat OT - The most beautiful warship (in your opinion) (3/31/2006 1:51:45 PM)

Renault did us a big favour by showing us the rear end in the ads...their not getting as many takers as they thought on this model..its BUTT UGLY![:'(]

Adnan Meshuggi -> RE: Somewhat OT - The most beautiful warship (in your opinion) (3/31/2006 1:53:56 PM)

1. Zara CA...
2. Prinz Eugen CA
both are very near
3. Bismark-BB, i never liked the 3X3-System, 4x2 looks better
4. Hindenburg BC

for the "old" times, the 74er-Class of the french... they are the "best" looking ships.

The predreadnoughts (between 1900-1905) all have something...

CVs... hm, here i love the Tahio...

the yamato looks BIG... but as i mentioned, i dislike 3X3... the symmetrical 4x2 is my favourite...

You guys have got it all wrong. I am going with the canoe in LST's sig. I think it is the SS Hooters but positive ID is difficult since he rudely put type in the parts necessary for positive ID...
