This is a play off Brady's threads, but when I read the story about this plane, I couldn't resist. Please forgive me about the editing of the pics, but it would have been way too easy.

Cheers!

Weird.. gull wings.. is it a Curtis-Wright aircraft?

JeffroK -> RE: What is it? (4/3/2006 2:17:24 PM)

The last picture looks so much like a Wirraway, but its not a Boomerang or a P-64.

Is it a NA-50A, the first step from a Harvard/Texan to the P-64?

Wonder if Chance-Vought looked at this before developing the Corsair?

It's not really a gull-wing, guys..Just a modified dihedral to strengthen the wing prior to going to the wingroot.(Gull wing came later)..
AT6 has the same thing, gives the wing strength for aerobatics, etc.

Vought V 143...............

V-141, -143 1936 = 1pClwM rg; 750hp P&W R-1535; span: 33'6" length: 22'2" v: c.300; ff: 3/29/36. Fighter based on purchased design of Northrop 3A/XP-948. Did not fare well in Army pursuit tests and was modified with 825hp R-1535SB, extensive fuselage and tail redesign, and redesignated V-143; Rex Beisel et al. POP: 1 [NR56V], sold to Japan. Despite contest, it is obvious that the A6M Zero fighter was heavily influenced by Japanese engineers' evaluation of the design. Additionally, design ideas are noted in F3U and F4U.

Outstanding!

V-143 it is....

Vought built the plane and was unable to sell it. In 1937 he sold it to the Japanese for $175,000. Then didn't think much more about it till Pearl Harbor. That's when fingers were pointed at him for selling the planes to the "now enemy". Seized files after the war showed that the V-143 gave the Japs a huge boost forward in developing the Zero.

Yep,

The Tail looks like a Corsair.
