Hi-I think this pertains to all scenarios. I just sank Kaga off Rabaul, which the Allies control. Does she take her air group down with her & if so, are those planes added to the Allied Victory Point total? Or do they relocate to, say, Truk? Thanks, Hugh Browne

Planes from sinking - or inoperational - carriers try to reach the next available land base.
Have seen this happen several times during the Guadalcanal/New Guinea phase of my ongoing game.
As an Allied player you should see later on Japanese carrier based airplanes (Vals, Kates) popping up in Rabaul or other Japanes occupied bases in the vicinity.

So would the loss of those planes appear under the 'operation loss' tally for that day if it went down with the ship? Would they be scored under 'destroyed on ground' by chance?

Planes that go down with ships are shown as operational losses

Planes that are on the ship when it sinks are recorded as "destroyed on field". Planes returning from a mission with no base close enough to land ditch and show up as ops losses.

Another question concerning this. What happens to the displaced carrier squadrons on land airfields? They behave strangely. They can be "used" as normal military but they do have distinct properties. You can eg not disband them. You can also not relocate them to a carrier (as the CVs come "full", CVE's do behave differently but those I've not understood as well). Is there something in the rules about them?

I have just run a test on this and planes on a ship that sinks are definitely recorded as op losses. In the training scenario I put an allied BG on an AK and sailed it to Saipan where it was duly sunk. The lost BG are the only plane losses that occured. The intel scrreen is shown below.

I'm not sure that planes carried as cargo are reported "lost" the same way that carrier-based planes are.

From what I have seen, carrier based planes (that are sunk) are reported as ops losses as well.

Are they reported as op losses if they were airborne and have no alternate airfield in range, but ground losses when they go down with the ship???

Just done more testing on this by sending unescorted Japanese CV's into the maw of a serious allied air combat TF. And boy did that feel good.

What I can report is FTR's on a CV that sinks are reported as op losses whether there squadron is stood down or on partial CAP while DB's and TB's are reported as destroyed on the ground if they did not fly or could not fly because of flight deck damage.

I did not have the time to recreate the situation where TB's or DB's could be in the air, but out of transfer range of a base when there ship goes down, so can't say how these would be reported.

Hopefully this makes things a little clearer
