serg3d -> On the spearhead. June 1941. (4/13/2006 4:21:47 PM)

Colonel Katukov! We have a situation here.
German attacking old fortification line near the Grodno. Unfortunatly most of fortifications was disarmed.
But you are lucky - in your sector there is still naval gun emplacment and mindefields.

You tank brigade in a reasonably good shape - you have intact T-34(40) company(10 tanks) , and managed to keep company of obsolete BT5 light tanks (14 BT5 and 1 BT7a).
You also having 3 just conscripted infantry companies, recon platoon, HMG platoon, two platoons of AT guns - pretty good 76mm and old 37mm junk, two sections of 82 mortars and AA MG truck platoon. That should be enough to stop Fritzs.
Oh, in you sector should be remnants of retreated anty-tank battalion - two 76mm AT platoons and two Maxim MG platoons. Take them temporarily under your command - their former commander was just shot for retreaing without order.
We have no recon whatsoever - you may be hit by battalion of the 6th panzer division or it coud be some unidentified infantry, be prepare for both. You should delay the enemy at least 30 hours.

At last brigade have enough ammo and can stop running. Time to make a stand. Katukov ordered to disperce AT guns and MG along the edge of the forest, infantry in the first line before them, light tanks behind in the forest. Precsios T34 company in the center, behind concrete naval gun emplacement. His main hope was on the minefield, which should be able to blunt German attack.

For three hours Germans were taking their time, at last 4 sections of infantry and three tanks moved frough the central hill and to the north from the center. Katukov ordered light tanks move forward and open fire on the enemy infantry. Conscripts and MG started fire too.

Suddenly german infantry was all over the center. AT guns destroyed two enemy tanks. Conscripts continue their fire. BT5 moved out and into the forest keeping the fire on german tanks and infantry. Some german sections retreated. Best infantry in the world were retreating under the fire poorly armed and barely trained former workers, peasants and just released convicted political prisoners. Reausserd by small number of german tanks Katukov moved forward T34 company.

Another hour and two remainig T-VI destroyed. However german infantry and MG pushing stubbornly to and through the minefield.

More and more german infantry attack all along the defensive line. If they break through the thin line of defense into the forest tanks will be useless and inexpirienced conscripts will not be able to push them back. For a while tanks and MG keeping germans at bay. Luckily there is no AT rifles. Thin armor of BT5 wouldn't able to withstand them. However they may stll appear.

German AT rifles made their appearence. Tanks should be more careful now. German infantry walking through the mine field en masse. AT least two section broke though the minefiled(may be more). One section of conscripts and Maxim MG lost, four sections only half of their fomer strength and four suppressed.

10th hour. About acompany of german infantry broke through minefiled in the ceneter-notrh. Situation becoming dangerous there. Two BT5 immobilized and anothwer couple severley dameged.

Colonel, commander of the first infantry company killed. All AT guns out of HE ammo. Artillerists asking permission to retreat.
- No retreat, let them serve as observer for tanks.
Situation changed from bad to worse. One german company broken through minefield at center-north, and another at center. German infantry pouring enormous amount of machinegun fire, killing conscripts and suppressing tanks. Two BT5 destroyed by AT rifels and another two immobilized. Some severely damaged.
Katukov ordered move two paltoons of T34 to contrattack at center-north, and another platoon to keep center.
BT5 are supporting infantry. Conscripts ordered fire only on opportunity.

serg3d -> RE: On the spearhead. June 1941. (4/14/2006 1:31:50 PM)

15/30.
Seems the situation on the nort is stabilized. All free tanks moved to the center. AA MG truck perform remarkable in the center, but only have ammo for 3 more hours of fighting. Some more conscript lost, but now as conscript fire only on opprtunity they perform better. Half of HMG lost, only about four still have ammo. Situation on the south is murky - alot of smoke there. On south Katukov have only 3 BT5 about platoon of conscript and one dameged DSHK HMG. They are being attacked by about a company of infantry, but it is not clear how many germans actually crossed the minefield.

serg3d -> RE: On the spearhead. June 1941. (4/14/2006 4:43:12 PM)

Another German push, sea of machinegun fire, and all of sudden german morale broke. Major victory !
Core losses - 5 sections of conscripts, two BT5, 37mm AT gun.

serg3d -> RE: On the spearhead. June 1941. (4/14/2006 7:25:41 PM)

Colonel, you did well. You superb performance allowed us to regroup and conterattack. No, we got some heavy tanks from Chelyabinsk. I can not give you many, but you will get heavy tank platoon - three KV-1A and KV-2 to replace your fragile BT-5. Be careful with KV-2 - they are formdable tanks, one well placed KV-2 stopped 6th panzer division month ago for a day, but they prone to breakdown, can not negotiate steep slopes and have very high siluette. No your next mission - advance to Orsha. Expect some panzers to meet. I have attached one engeneer platoon and one rifle platoon to your brigade, just in case.

Katukov desided that head-on meeting engament is not what he want with his inexpirienced crews. He will try to ambash enemy. On the hill in the center, overlooking approach to objective he put his for 76mm ATG. one conscript company he stretched accross the forest on thr north flank, another through thr center. One platoon of BT5 will support central infantry company, another recon in south hill and transport DSHK HMG. On the sough he concentrated T34 company with conscript desant, and heavy tanks with recon desant.
First BT5 with DSK on armor moved into hills. One encountered five German TIII and TV and got severely damaged - gun and mg disabled. KV1 moved to the resque and promptly kill two german tanks. the rest of heavy platoon followed into the engament. Local tank battle started. In the center 76mm ATG killed enemy armored car. Conscript companies strated advance through the forest on the north and central clearing.

serg3d -> RE: On the spearhead. June 1941. (4/14/2006 10:45:29 PM)

On the south tank enagment turned into pitched battle - three remainig TIII supported by some infantry against four KV and three T34 with accompanieing conscripts and rifles.
That was not enough so they were reinforced by seven BT5. After three turns of battle TIII were destroyed. One KV-2 and one KV-1 were abandoned in the process.
On the north german tank company of TIII and TII walked into ambush.They enetred obective from the forest into the clearing, in the field of fire of 76mm ATG and surrounded by russian conscripts and engineers in the woods. Two 152mm SP guns were destroyed in the outshoot with russian tanks on the south hill. One T34 the from second line of defense was lost. Most of german tanks was destroyed but some remains in the wood.
Are all the german tanks entered into battle or there is another company waiting ? Still not clear.
South platoon of BT5, free after destruction of south group of german tanks made rush behind the enemy lines and found three nebelwerfers.

serg3d -> RE: On the spearhead. June 1941. (4/15/2006 12:38:58 AM)

German made another push for central objectives, with four remaining tanks and one or two company of aiborne and rifles. Katukov moved all infantry into center and after that tanks too. Both central objective completly covered in smoke, infantry and tanks fighting each other in close quaters, on top of dead and burned hulls. On both sides soldiers running in blind paniks from this mini-hell. While battle going for central objective single T34 with recon team took last objectice on the east. Four nebelwerfer destroyed by BT5 (one BT5 killed by direct hit) Two 81mm mortars found and killed by mixed tank/infantry groups behind german lines. German have no reserves - their last tanks gone on by one. One desperate push of german infantry - and they break.

serg3d -> RE: On the spearhead. June 1941. (4/17/2006 9:26:23 PM)

Katukov, are you here ? I have no time, we are straightening front line again. Take a Heavy tank platoon for your brigade - another three KV-1A instead of your BT5 and delay Geramn infantry advance. THere are mine field, so you will not have any problems.

There indeed were quite wide minefields. German infantry pushed Katukov conscripts in the center

serg3d -> RE: On the spearhead. June 1941. (4/17/2006 9:37:57 PM)

Katukov conterattacked with T34 and retook center.
German managed to take it again and again tanks repelled them.
After some time German morale broke.

serg3d -> RE: On the spearhead. June 1941. (4/17/2006 11:43:03 PM)

A new day, a new mission. Brigade was resupplied again - former light tank company now have 6 KV 1A, 2 KV-1B and 3 KV-2. The rest - 3 BT5 and one BT7A. Now Katokov's brigade took position in hevily fortified dector - two strongpoint with 152mm howitzer, 45mm ATG and 2 MG each, two light pillboxes with 45mm ATG, 76mm gun and MG, and 3 MG nest (1 DSHK 12.5mm 2 maxims 7.62mm). Thwere were 4 12.5mm HMG and 4 sniper in the sector than Katukov's brigade arrived. Minfield defended approach to fortifications. And now german tanks were attacking.

serg3d -> RE: On the spearhead. June 1941. (4/19/2006 1:38:05 PM)

This battle went well for Katukov. Fortifications - big concrete strongpoints in the centre and south, and two lighter pillboxes on flanks soaked up most of the enemy fire, while 76mm ATGs in the center and KV-1s killed most of the enemy tanks. Two wooden machinegun nests were lost though, also first line of the HMG was completly demoralized. Most of T34 remain in the reserve, while one platoon moved to the north, to support infantry. KV-2s in the cener fired on the enemy infantry without much effect.

serg3d -> RE: On the spearhead. June 1941. (4/19/2006 6:57:56 PM)

Another couple of turns and German retreated.

However the situation on the front was not so good. Briagde had to reatreat again. On the plus side supply train arraived just before retreat with the rest of the heavy tanks for his brigade and some other equipment.
Now Katukov brigade had:
HQ
Medium tank company
10x T34(1940)
Heavy tank company:
6x KV-1A
4x KV-1B
5x KV-2
Infantry:
three conscript companies(30x conscript sections)
FO
Ammo Dump
Mortars:
4x 120mm mortars
2x 82mm moratrs
AA:
4x GAZ-4M-AA AA MG truks
HMG:
4x 12.5mm DSHK HMG
ATG:
5x 76mm ATG
3x 37mm ATG

Also in his sector already deployed:
Guard infantry company
10x guard infantry
3x 7.62mm Maxim MG
3x 50mm mortars
HMG:
8x 12.5 DSHK HMMG
ATG:
8x 76mm ATG
7x snipers

Most of his forces Katukov deployed in the center and on the sough.
However he seems miscalculated - german halftraks with infantry advanced against his north flank.

serg3d -> RE: On the spearhead. June 1941. (4/26/2006 9:38:00 PM)

For some time German halftracks were lingering in the field.
But they weren't retreating - they were waiting for german tanks!
About a battalion of TII and TIII were advancing in the north and center.
Katukov was especially worried about north - he didn't expect heavy attack there, most of Katukov's ATG were deployed in the center and on the south.
Trying to blunt German offence Katukov ordered KV-1 and KV-2 platoons counterattack.

serg3d -> RE: On the spearhead. June 1941. (4/26/2006 10:15:56 PM)

On the north German tanks pressed russian tanks back. Two KV-2 and 3 T34 were lost. On the south and center situation were better - 76mm ATG platoons stopped dead german tanks and second KV-1 platoon and T-34 platoon contrattacked south flank of german advance. Suddenly german north force changed direction of attack and engaged first KV-1 platoon and remaning KV-2s in fierce close combat.

Another T34 and KV-1 were lost in in the cener. However the Germans were already on the werge of breakdown. Another couple of attacks and their morale broke. Major victory.
Russian core losses - 2 KV-2, 4 T34, 1 KV1B, 3 section of conscript, 2 12.5mm HMG, 1 AA MG truck.
