From Nemo's AAR, the first rounds have gone to the Allies. When airfields are trying to neutralize each other, the 4E bombers are tough to beat.

itsjustme -> RE: Lunacy AND Shrewdness (6/16/2006 6:38:13 AM)

Interesting that he would infer that.

Here's the situation in Karachi.

I have 2 64 squadrons of LB-30's and 2 48 squadrons of B-17Es.  In addition I have wellingtons and hudsons galore.  I closed Bombay for sure.  Now he has relocated to Ahmabad (sp?).  He has about 400 fighters there.  The first attack was a draw.  I killed about 100 fighters and damaged about another 100.  Problem is that my 4e morale is in the tank.  I don't have any choice but to keep flying them to try and close that base.  If I can do that, I should be able to hold air supremacy for another couple of weeks while waiting on aviation reinforcements.

I managed to ship in a division of Aussie troops and to evac an indian brigade from southern india right under his nose (he caught the evac TF, but everything went towards obliterating the MSW escort and the transport got away clean).

Additionally, I get a new UK division and an additional indian division tomorrow. That should put me at over 18,000 av.   He might take Karachi, but its going to be incredibly bloody.  What is interesting is now that he's gotten this far, I don't think he has a choice but to take Karachi.  He' can't afford the amount of troops it would take to pin me up.  I know his plans are bigger than that.

I've got additional fighters about 2 days out from being shipped in.  I am comitting a ton of forces to this front, but don't really see a choice.

veji1 -> RE: Lunacy AND Shrewdness (6/16/2006 10:42:10 AM)

I guess the whole point is winning the air war... Since Karachi is a port, if he wins it and manages to close the airfield, whatever the cost may be for him, then he can keep bombarding from the air and nuke you with the battleline... Then it is just a question of committing all he's got to the assault... His troops will be broken for awhile, but I guess it is worth it...

If you manage not to lose the air war, he can't take, it, except by risking the battleline... The main difference with the Chungking situation players often face is that KArachi is a port, if if wasn't, you'd be secure...

Sneer -> RE: Lunacy AND Shrewdness (6/16/2006 10:49:34 AM)

and there is something i learnt in my PBEM
few assaults that do not go right for him may push his inf morale down and when under 40 units start refusing attacking
with all that units in Karachi there must lots of eng squads - so even damaged heavily it si repaired very quickly
i think that unless Nemo risk Battleline under KB umbrella it will be difficult to him to win this war
it is main RN task - do not let airfield nuked - even if they are going to die all

what is supply situation ?
what is eng units number ?

I strongly agree with that idea -- if you lose air superiority you will lose India. But from my review of the AAR, there just isn't enough of the RN left to oppose the battleline backed by the KB. I would lay lots of mines, have submarine assets in the area, and of course make sure you have squadrons for anti-IJN missions. Also, you might want to make some demonstrations in the Central Pacific so Nemo cannot afford to divert all of his carrier power to the Indian Ocean.

That was the reasoning behind my assessment. Defending Karachi shows the complete interdependence of air power and battleline in WitP. Although in rl only airpower mattered.

itsjustme -> RE: Lunacy AND Shrewdness (6/17/2006 4:11:10 AM)

Supply and fuel are full,  999,999 each.

18 engineer and base units in Karachi.  About 1800 base AV in place with lvl 8 forts (his first attack took them down to 8) but they are about 50% back to lvl 9.  Everything is 100 prep points for Karachi.

Capt. Harlock -> RE: Lunacy AND Shrewdness (6/17/2006 4:10:04 PM)

quote:

About 1800 base AV in place with lvl 8 forts

Was that 1800 or 18,000? (One of your previous posts said you were getting an extra UK division.) Also, do you have enough guns for an artillery duel?

aztez -> RE: Lunacy AND Shrewdness (6/17/2006 4:56:47 PM)

An 1800 assault points is not going to stop him that is 100% certainty. I would say that you need more than 3000 assault points and even than you are going to have tough times holding Karachi.

itsjustme -> RE: Lunacy AND Shrewdness (6/17/2006 5:20:22 PM)

Well, the adjusted AV is @ 18,000 when you adjust for prep points, HQ bonuses, urban bonus and fort levels.    He's losing between 5-10k troops per assault.  His last assault didn't budge the fort level. He's going to need air superiority to win this fight.  That said, he may get it.  He is stopping my 4Es cold right now because their morale is just completely in the tank.  I'm afraid to rest them lest he catch them all on the ground with his bombers.

Rob Brennan UK -> RE: Lunacy AND Shrewdness (6/17/2006 7:22:29 PM)

hiya

would you mind asking nemo to carry on his side of the AAR please, or has your defence of karachi depressed him too much [;)]..

It has been a cracking game you two are having and i like nemos detailed analysis , although i suspect his plans may have been de-railed a bit [:D][:D]

itsjustme -> RE: Lunacy AND Shrewdness (6/17/2006 7:37:02 PM)

I will certainly pass it along to him.  I think real life has just caught up with him a bit as his turns have slowed a bit of the last few days.  I am sure his reports will be back up soon.

Life keeps me from posting regularly, but here is the combat report from the most recent turn.  Hopefully this will keep you entertained until Nemo returns.

You can see that I've got plenty of 4E's but their morale is in the tank.  I've raise the ceiling for their next run.  I can't stop trying to hit his airfields as I can't risk letting him put in a coordinated attack on Karachi and catching everything on the Ground.  I've just shipped in about 60 new kittyhawks.  Hopefully this will be a nasty surprise for his craft as my hurris are decimated.  Suggestions on what to do to get the effectiveness of my 4Es back up are welcome.

Here you can see the most recent artillery barrage.  I have 4 arty units at karachi and they are the only ones bombarding so as to keep everyone else fresh.

ny59giants -> RE: Lunacy AND Shrewdness (6/17/2006 9:42:51 PM)

If you have enough replacements for your heavy bombers, you might start rotating them to get 2 or 3 days of stand down to help their morale and fatigue recover. Or set them on "Naval Attack and Rest" with a short range so only a close TF is attacked. I image he is rotating his planes in and out and you have to try to do what you can with only one base.

itsjustme -> RE: Lunacy AND Shrewdness (6/19/2006 12:03:43 AM)

I am afraid that Karachi is doomed. The RAF has been shattered, the airbase is closed and I have begun pulling the 4Es with the range out of Karachi into the Soviet Union. Karachi has all the supply it can handle and lvl 8 forts, but it is doomed as it will not be able to resist the battleline when it comes calling. In retrospect, I wish I had shipped some CD units in with the Aussie division. That might have been a nasty surprise. Moreover, my engineers are too busy repairing the runways to build the fort level back to 9. I expect it will take a long time to reduce Karachi, but I think the end result is a foregone conclusion. Another thing I should have done was to stand down my bomber forces when I closed bombay. At the time I was concerned about them getting caught on the ground, but in retrospect, I should have taken the chance.

The war is rapidly becoming what Nemo wants it to be: Closer to a single front war.

In a last ditch effort, the remains of the RN and several dutch and aussie naval units sailed into the teeth of the IJN surface fleet to attempt to put a dent in the Battleline, therefore making it less effective against Karachi. I do not believe I was successful and the vast majority of the surface assets were lost. A small task force of 2 british CVs a couple of DDs and CAs is now making for the safety of Perth. Given that Nemo knows I was shipping units in from australia, I expect to meet some opposition.

Here is the most recent AAR.

Although I am damaging a ton of AC, this level of damage to the Airbase, if consistent is not going to permit any further use of the RAF.

I'd really like some input here. I have two Aussie divisions at Derby. Both are fully prepped for Koepang and I've significantly degraded the ability of the coastal guns there. However, if I take koepang I will be leaving Derby very very exposed and it is highly possible that he will be able to prevent me from extracting one of those divisions after the invasion for at least some time to come. Thoughts on this are appreciated.

good result of naval battle(warspite group) - you need more of it - RN will be doomed if karachi falls so every JPN ship in trouble is a gift to you
BTW i forgot to tell you but you could move US west coast heavy CD guns to karachi by changing them to Southeast Asia command - this would be extremaly nasty surprise for battleline ( with WITP cd model)

It takes 90 days for them to get there - he doesn't have 90 days - he'll lose them enroute.

You have to ask yourself - what do you get from having those two Aussie Divisions in Koepang? Given that you are about to loose all of your Karachi reinforcements, do you really want to risk having two Aussie Divisions trapped on a malarial island?

At this point, do you have Brisbane adequately defended? You wouldn't want to lose your Australian reinforcements too...

My advice is to play it safe until you can bring overwhelming force against his naval forces.

Good luck -

koepang will be trap if he decides to move against northern OZ - he can bypass Timor and with naval superiority and RN badly beaten it will be difficult to pull them out

Maybe use the 2 divs to take it but only leave a light garrison, sending the divs back to Oz. While he holds Koepang he could use his heavies to do some strategic bombing.

I don't see the point - leaving a light garrison just invites an invasion, and there is no effective means to set a trap. When facing the results of so many setbacks its much better to pull back to where the opposition is at a distance disadvantage and set traps.

It's much better to leave Japanese forces to suffer in the malaria of Timor and bomb them at your leisure while rebuilding enough strength to be able to inflict a significant defeat.

The issue in this game is to build up enough Allied forces to crush the IJN. In the absence of doing that the Japanese side can stay strong indefinitely.

Redd -> RE: Lunacy AND Shrewdness (6/20/2006 6:01:18 AM)

Well, just to throw in my 2c, I think that you'd better start concentrating forces in south-eastern Oz. I don't think that you have sufficient forces to defend northern Oz or even Perth if he really wants them ( and he apparently wants just about everything!). I would be trying to bring in as much supply and units and aircraft into Brisbane and Sydney. I think that most of the Oz reinforcements come into Sydney, and you don't want to lose those as well as the ones at Karachi.[X(][:-] In fact the more I think about it, you might just want to hunker down in southern Oz (Sydney, Melbourne and the rest). The more you spread out, the more it is to his advantage. Nemo is all about schwerepunkt, he never comes light to the party, and he always tries to maximise his advantages.

Since this is a no holds barred type of game, might I suggest this: I have read on these forums that if you change the command of North Pacific to SEAC, all following reinforcements will divert to Karachi. Perhaps if you change SEAC to Australia Command they will go to Sydney? If any one has an actual clue on this one please advise. Of course you'd have to change command again later to get them out of Oz, but thats a fair piece down the road.

Also, do you have any subs near Karachi? Can you get out any cadres if things go bad? It's possible because it was done in real life, use it as much as you can.

It doesn't work in reverse - you can only send troops from the West Coast to Karachi; you can't send troops out of Karachi to anywhere else.

That's why it's so critical to try to protect Karachi. But the problem is that if a Japanese player wants to go all out for Karachi during the first couple of Game-months, there is really nothing an Allied player can do about it. The Developers never expected players to use an "India-first" gambit, but of course, if there is an "edge" in a game, some player will find it and others will use it.

Redd -> RE: Lunacy AND Shrewdness (6/20/2006 6:53:17 AM)

So whadda ya think Dave, should he turtle up in southern Oz or defend forward ?

Nomad -> RE: Lunacy AND Shrewdness (6/20/2006 6:58:10 AM)

I really don't understand why the developers didn't consider this. They considered that the Japanese player might try invading the USA and made a rule for it. Why not a rule that if any base in India is taken by the Japanese then some reinforcements are moved up some. There were forces avaliable to the British, but they did not need to move them to India since it was not under attack. And while we are at it, why didn't they have the reinforcements scheduled for Karachi arrive in Australia after a 30 or 60 day delay?
