renwor -> Airpower prices (7/13/2000 7:16:00 PM)

hi all
no, I am not going to present a formula for airstrike pricing. Not yet
But I would like your opinion to couple of thoughts.
Airstrikes consist of strafing and bombing.
Bombing is in fact delivery of HE explosive to "designed" spot on the map.
It's similar to artilery, mainly off-map one. It may be a bit more flexible, accurate and without need of spotters, but it's similar.
Unlike artilery, any airplane is capable of just one bombing run in the scenario. It drops all.
So, when you are buying dedicated bomber, you are buying /apart from the graphic candy/ one salvo of big shells. Really big ones ... compare HE kill of 120kg bomb with shells and you end up in the naval gun range.
So this part of airplane pricing should be in some corelation to artilery salvo (not whole battery)
Then you got strafings ....You may get more then one apperance of strafing plane over the battlefield.
In ideal condition of max morale of pilots and no AA flak, they are strafing until out of ammo.
So I believe ammo supply should be decisive part of strafing plane price.
Same plane ...fighter with 4 0.5cal guns with 10 ammo should cost close, but not quite to double of the plane with 4x0.5cal and 5 ammo.
Ideally first plane would give you two attacks, second only one.
So I believe
a) bomb power (total HE kill of all bombs aboard) and
b) strafing power:
number off ammo x "value of respective gun"
(problem with more than 1 type aboard)
should make the cornerstones of airstrike pricing. toughness of plane should be important modifier, maybe accuracy, if anybody is able to find out how it works.
Remeber, you are not buying PLANE, just one AIRSTRIKE (or in some cases more).
Planes cannot be rearmed during scenario.
I think it's a pitty. It would be really nice, if a bomber from turn one could rearm and appear over battlefield in lets say turn 20. Fighters or close support planes earlier, heavy bombers never.
just a thought
