January 2, 1942

South Pacific

Bombardments at Rabaul continue. CVN follows up with another shock attack that is dealt a very bloody repulse. I’m thinking CVN must not have enough supply ashore as he’s got four times my forces.

Philippines

I send four PT boats against a Japanese invasion force at San Jose. PT-35 takes two hits and is damaged, but one AK and two PCs are torpedoed. I’m ecstatic with this casualty ratio but suspect I may play the rest of the game without seeing its like again. The PT force does not survive long as Zeroes out of Jolo inflict serious damage on several boats. Further south, the Nagato and her escorts continue to provide fire support for the Japanese Army at Naga. I have two Philippine Army Divisions dug in here and am hoping they can resist for at least a week if not longer. In Mindanao, troops continue to unload at Cagayan. As soon as CVN attacks, I expect the base to fall. B-17s strike at the naval forces at both Cagayan and Naga and expend their ordinance with zero results. CVN closes out the day with a shock attacks at Clark and Bataan. The defenders at Clark hold and inflict double their losses which at Bataan almost 2,000 Japanese fall while 44 Allied soldiers fall.

Malaya

Another TF shows up at Kuantan and Singapore launches against it. One AP is torpedoed and an AK and AP are bombed. Dutch Martins following the RAF and RAAF hit one AK with two more bombs.

China/Burma

The Rangoon Air Force strikes at the 33rd Division again. Very light casualties are inflicted.

January 5, 1942

CVN and I have encountered the sync bug. I’m not quite sure what has gone on since January 2. I believe we saw results similar to the last few days leading up to the bug. My reports indicated that Rabaul fell every day, but it hasn’t yet. CVN started sending me his combat reports starting on January 5, so that’s were I’m going to try to pick back up.

North Pacific

Still very quiet in this theater. I’ve got North Pacific air support assets starting to arrive soon but am going to be using them on the West Coast for now as the units that started on the West Coast were already assigned to other theaters and I’m shipping them out.

Central Pacific

I’m continuing to garrison islands west of Hawaii. I split the 24th Division and sent C Brigade to Midway and am getting B Brigade moved to Johnston. A Brigade will end up at Palmyra as soon as I can arrange the shipping. I also need to get more supply into Pearl as I’m starting to run a little low. Most of my shipping is currently tied up bringing supplies, aircraft, and troops to the South Pacific and Australia. I’m relying on new arrivals at San Francisco to carry supplies to Hawaii. I'm also continuing to build up Lahaina and Hilo. Once they are a little further along and I have the engineers, I'll likely start with a couple more islands. I'd like to wait with them until I'm more confident that I won't be looking at an invasion of any part of Hawaii as I don't yet feel strong enough to hold all the islands, just the ones I'm developing now.

South Pacific

Ironically, after three false reports, today Rabaul actually does fall. The three Australian units there retreat to the west. I imagine they’re going to have a long trek along the path further west. By the time they get where they’re going, I assume CVN will have taken those bases also.

Philippines

CVN continues to unload troops at Naga. My two Philippine Divisions are starting to feel a little lonely. At Butuan, 3 Japanese battleships hit the defenses hard. Then the Nagato and escorts steam into range and hit them again. I think he might be serious about taking the place. Further north, Nells hit Clark and my Brewsters out of Borneo bomb Tawi Tawi. The day closes with a shock attack at Clark Field. Losses for both sides are about equal and the forts are not reduced.

ABDA

The war begins to arrive in this theater. Ocars from Jolo strike against shipping at Tarakan.

Malaya

Japanese Army bombers hammer Victoria Point. This causes little damage as I no longer have any forces there. I have withdrawn all of my forces south of Rangoon as I was concerned about an end run up the railway along the interior of Burma.

China/Burma

My bombers in Rangoon launch again. The Chinese IL-4c bombers crews are starting to learn a bit about their new trade.

January 6, 1942

West Coast

A supply convoy has almost finished loading and will soon sail for Noumea. 64 B-26s are the only combat forces in the convoy. I’ve already sent all the land forces I can and have also dispatched auxiliaries to supply and maintain the naval forces that I expect will soon be needed in the South Pacific. I’m hoping to get AS, AD, and AV ships into Noumea and Suva and operate them as forward bases until such time as I’m ready to move forward. Aukland and Australia will be developed as fleet bases as well in case my selections prove to be too far forward. I know from reading other AARs that Suva and Noumea might be very ambitious, but so far operations seem to be unfolding at a much slowing pace in this game than in a game involving seasoned players. I wonder if the level of experience on both our parts doesn’t lend itself to more historical gameplay?

Central Pacific

South Pacific Headquarters is beginning to load up for transit to Noumea.

Philippines

Troops continue to land at Naga under the cover of several heavy cruisers. Butuan is also bombarded. There are no forces here to it will fall as soon as troops land. Another shock attack at Clark Field takes place. I outnumber the attackers 4:1 so am able to hold my ground with little trouble. Of course, this is burning up supply.

Malaya

Bombers continue to strike the airfield at Singapore. All enemy task forces within range have either completed their mission or been withdrawn. I am starting to lose planes to these attacks and am having a hard time keeping other planes in the air. Air groups are also becoming fatigued. I’m going to pull back the air groups to Palembang to rest and repair for a bit. If transports do come back to Malaya, I can them move back to Singapore.

India/Burma

The troops in Rangoon continue to improve their morale and disabled unites are recovering. I don’t intend to defend Rangoon, but have several infantry forces taking advantage of the non-malarial zone. Every base force I can scrape up, along with a couple of brigades, is currently at Mandalay digging as fast as they can. I’ve got a couple minor forces thrust south of Rangoon as scouts. CVN has one division north of Bangkok but I’ve sighted nothing else. Bombers based at Rangoon are bombing this force. There is no fighter opposition and its good training. I’ve got the IL-4c squadron from China helping with this op as they can use the training in a location that doesn’t drain Chinese supply.

Capt Henry_MatrixForum -> RE: Novices in the Pacific: Capt Henry (A) v cvn65 (J) (5/11/2006 4:40:25 AM)

January 7, 1942

Philippines

Bombardments and landings continue at Butuan. Air attacks continue at Clark and my Dutch fighters continue to train over Tawi Tawi. Zeroes find a transport trying to sneak south and put eight bombs into her. I don’t think that ship will reach port. CVN shock attacks at Clark again and loses much more than he gains.

ABDA

Zeroes strafe the AK Sipirok at Tarakan, adding three bombs in the process. I’ve flown a lot of men out of the Philippines to Borneo and am now trying to get them to Australia. CVN had not been venturing very far south with his air assets, but now he’s starting to put more planes on naval attack. This is going to be somewhat of a problem. I’m also being slowed by the path between Tarakan and Balikpapan. I had though it was one step down from rail and one step up from the basic path, but my forces are moving along it even more slowly than they would a path. This confuses me and may end up costing me the entire 4th Marine Regiment as that entire force is now slogging through the jungle.

Malaya

Air attacks on the Singapore airfield continue. Two Beuforts and one Blenheim are lost.

Burma\India

A few bombers in Rangoon launch against the 33rd Division. They don’t score much but at least they’re still flying. The troops in Rangoon are starting to improve their morale. I suppose it’s a forlorn or foolish hope, but I’m hoping to get enough troops in good shape to at least inflict some damage and delay CVN in Burma.

Capt Henry_MatrixForum -> RE: Novices in the Pacific: Capt Henry (A) v cvn65 (J) (5/13/2006 7:25:29 PM)

January 8,2007

North Pacific

I’ve still done very little to improve this theater. The Alaskan bases are being improved, but with the base forces assigned to the west coast, there aren’t forces to expand to the west. Fortunately, my opponent has yet to show interest in this area.

Central Pacific

I continue to work on the Midway/Johnston/Palmyra defense line. The RCT destined for Canton is still en route. At present, the defense is largely composed of land forces. I lack the fighter force to adequately protect any of these bases and certainly don’t have the naval forces to contest a major effort involving the KB. I’m hoping these islands can hold against anything but a determined, well supported attack containing at least a full division.

South Pacific

I’ve decided that Noumea, rather than Townsville, will be the main ASW base in the South Pacific area. Noumea is centrally located to cover both the Australian and New Zealand approaches as well as help with convoy work back towards the U.S. I will maintain some ASW in Australia, but the majority will be at Noumea, at least for the moment. I have several unescorted cargo and troop convoys closing in on this area and will be providing them with escorts for the run from Noumea to Australia. After that, some of the escorts will remain permanently with the convoys

Philippines

The coastal batteries at Naga were back in action and inflicted minor damage on a gunboat and destroyer while several transports unloaded additional troops. A shock attack later in the day suffers serious casualties as my forces once again demonstrate how even green troops can fight well when properly fortified. CVN also assaults Butuan, which has not garrison and promptly falls. My opponent seems to be focusing on clearing out all of the Philippines prior to moving south into Dutch territory.

Malaya

Another damaged Beaufort was destroyed on the tarmac at Singapore as CVN hit the airfield again. I’m thinking I may be done with this harbor as all supply convoys seem to be routed further north out of range of almost all of my aircraft. They are certainly out of range of my torpedo bombers. Hudsons and Brewsters could still reach them, but I don’t believe I have the fighter force to properly CAP Singapore against the Zeroes escorting the bombers.

India/Burma

Rangoon is still untouched by CVN’s bombers and continues to launch nuisance raids against the 33rd Division. I’m not sure if CVN is having trouble with ground movement, but the division has moved into a pure jungle hex with no trail. I’m hoping this will cause a fair bit of attrition before he gets the division out of there. Almost all the infantry forces in Burma are currently in Rangoon, resting and replacing equipment. I’ve got most of them planning for Mandalay, but thought they would handle the climate in Rangoon better until such time as they have to move to a malarial zone. CVN is continuing strikes against Victoria Point.

Capt Henry_MatrixForum -> RE: Novices in the Pacific: Capt Henry (A) v cvn65 (J) (5/13/2006 7:25:57 PM)

January 9, 1942

Philippines

Shore batteries engage in another small action of Naga. Two more PGs receive light damage but the landings continue. Light air attacks also hit Clark Field, causing minor casualties to the defenders. Further south, Brewsters out of Borneo strike at Tawi Tawi again, causing no damage.

Malaya

The SS KXVII is spotted while on patrol and subject to a fierce ASW attack. 6 hits rapidly dispatch her.

India/Burma

Still very quiet in this theater. Other than my air attack on the 33rd Division and my opponents strikes at Victoria Point, we are experiencing somewhat of a sitzkrieg here. I do have two four engine bomb groups in theater at Calcutta and am preparing them for operations. I have been working to build Rangoon to a level five airfield so that I can get better ground strikes off on CVNs advancing troops. I’m also considering some strategic bombing from Rangoon to see if I can force him to burn some supply that may be needed elsewhere in several months. I’m not real well versed in the strategic bombing part of the game, but assume that if you are going to commence this type of bombing you need to have a very long view of the results.

China

An air attack on Changsha by Anns nets one I-16c against no Japanese losses. I’m starting to try to work a couple of Corps around CVNs northern flank. He is currently advancing in the North with over 80,000 men. I don’t expect three corps to stop him, but would like to try to get into his rear and force him to divert forces back to deal with me. This is intended to buy time while I rush several other corps north to help defend against this thrust. On the Southern flank, I have four or five divisions planning for Nanning, where recon indicates CVN might be a little weak. If I could eliminate that pocket, I could garrison the coast with a corps or two and release the other three for duty elsewhere.

Capt Henry_MatrixForum -> RE: Novices in the Pacific: Capt Henry (A) v cvn65 (J) (5/15/2006 1:51:52 AM)

January 10, 1942

All in all a very slow day. At this point, I like slow days so I’ll keep on taking ‘em if they come.

Philippines

CVN’s amphibious assault on Naga continues. The coastal guns have pretty much shot their wad so I’m just waiting for the land assaults. Air strikes at Clark continue to soften up my defenses. The AK Bisayas is spotted running south and is strafed and bombed. Her survival is in serious doubt. Back on land, a bombardment attack at Bataan continues to work over my defenders.

Malaya

Another strike at Singapore nets a single Buffalo. Not much to show for 61 Nells, but I suppose they are improving their pilot training as well.

China/Burma

The IL-4c bombers at Rangoon launch again. Their experience is getting up towards 60. Still not inflicting many casualties, though. Sort of like Singapore in reverse. On the northern end of the Chinese front, a Japanese shock attack suffers over 1,250 casualties while inflicting less than 50. Of course, the Chinese divisions may crumble at the next attack, but this result was encouraging. At Hsingyang, another Japanese shock attack suffers 2 to 1 losses, but pushes my troops out of the hex. China may be heating up a bit. I’m still trying to work around the northern flank and am also concentrating about five corps at Nanning. Air recon suggests this force could have decent odds of taking the place.

Capt Henry_MatrixForum -> RE: Novices in the Pacific: Capt Henry (A) v cvn65 (J) (5/15/2006 1:52:20 AM)

January 11, 1942

Philippines

Still more landings at Naga. I’m starting to believe that CVN really wants the place.A shock assault later in the day makes no headway against the defenders and suffers almost 1,000 casualties. Poor old Bisayas takes another nine bomb hits and is strafed against.

Malaya

Another 52 Nells work over the facilities at Singapore. It’s being confirmed to me that I’m likely never going to base aircraft there again.

China/Burma

Another fighter sweep over Wuhan nets me one Nate. The Chinese pilots are slowly starting to improve their abilities in the air. I’m still getting twice the fighters into action as CVN, so this is helping me train up without suffering severe casualties. I’m assuming this will stop soon as a few Zeroes would stop me in a hurry.

Capt Henry_MatrixForum -> RE: Novices in the Pacific: Capt Henry (A) v cvn65 (J) (5/15/2006 1:52:47 AM)

January 12, 1942

West Coast

The 111th RCT begins loading at San Francisco. Destination: Canton Island. Once Canton is garrisoned the Central Pacific’s initial line of defense should be in place. Then I’ll need to worry about strengthening it. I do have the Oglala and all the DM’s at Pearl laying mines out at Midway and Johnston. Once Canton is occupied, I’ll look at sending some minelayers on that round trip.

South Pacific

Things begin to stir here again. An amphibious force arrives at Kavieng and starts to unload. CVN still hasn’t make a move west into New Guinea but I’m betting he will soon. The Enterprise and Lexington are en route from Noumea back to New Zealand again. I’m still trying to move ASW assets into this area.

Philippines

More mop-up amphib ops in this theater. Landings at Taytay occur with no opposition. The force at Naga is also still unloading. CVN’s routine bombing of Clark continues.
ABDA
Malaya

The Nells are back at Singapore. Anti-aircraft batteries shoot down three attackers. It’s nice to make CVN at least pay some price for this bombing campaign.

Capt Henry_MatrixForum -> RE: Novices in the Pacific: Capt Henry (A) v cvn65 (J) (5/15/2006 1:53:24 AM)

January 13, 1942

Central Pacific

The 27th Division completes unloading at Pearl Harbor. Once again, there are three divisions holding this strategic location. I’m beginning to believe that any action in this theater will occur on the southern flank. After Canton is secured, I’m going to look at garrisoning and improving Baker Island. This should certainly take place if I ever intend an offense at Tarawa/Makin.

South Pacific

Kavieng falls to a Japanese assault. Work continues at Noumea as I’m trying to improve all three bases on the island.

Philippines

Yet another shock attack at Naga suffers high casualties. Over 2,000 Japanese fall while 122 Filipinos are felled. At Taytay, an unopposed Japanese assault takes the base.

ABDA

The De Ruyter and her escorts are attacked by the SS I-158. Unfortunately for I-158, her torpedoes miss and the dutch destroyers launch a devastating counterattack, hitting the luckless sub with four depth charges. I’m hopeful this will dispatch one more Japanese sub. At Tarakan, three Japanese battleships appeared and shelled the shore installations. Damage was also inflicted on the AK and PT in port. I haven’t spotted any transports headed towards Tarakan so I believe this is more of a raid than an invasion. I’m sure an invasion will occur soon, but not at this time. Moving near Balikpapan, the Houston is sighted an attacked by Zeroes. She takes two bombs that inflict little damage on her armor. On Timor, I’m redesignating the F.K.51 squadrons to other commands. Southwest Pacific will get most of them, but will be loaning them to China for a bit. One squadron will go to Southeast Asia. A small convoy of AKs will transport them to India.

China/Burma

More air combat over Wuhan, with little for either side to show for it. 2 Nates are destroyed with w I-16c’s damaged. Just outside of Yenen, a Chinese Corps out scouting is struck by almost 70,000 Japanese. The Corps holds its ground as the Japanese suffer moderate casualties. I’m on the defensive at Yenen and will only attempt to hold the ground I’ve currently taken.

In Burma, Blenheims join the IL-4s at Rangoon in striking the 33rd Division.

Capt Henry_MatrixForum -> RE: Novices in the Pacific: Capt Henry (A) v cvn65 (J) (5/15/2006 1:54:26 AM)

January 14, 1942

West Coast

Two fighter groups and one fighter squadron are loading in San Francisco for transport to Australia. One group is P-40s and one is P-39s. They certainly won’t provide air superiority, but they may help me achieve local superiority for short periods of time.

Philippines

Shock attacks at Clark begin again. This time, they succeed in reducing the fortifications to three. I consider this attack as heralding the final phase in the struggle for Clark. Manila is somewhat prepared for a siege and the forces at Bataan are also still resisting.

ABDA

A Japanese carrier is spotted east of Borneo. 21 Kates strike a single AP in the straight and hit here with three torpedoes. The presence of this carrier is going to be problematic as many of the forces evacuating from the Philippines are still waiting in Borneo for transport to Australia. In other bad news, Mersing falls to a shock assault. With Japanese ships beginning to move in this area, I’m transferring torpedo planes and fighters to Balikpapan and Samarinda in hopes that I can inflict some damage on the invader. Just one carrier probably can’t provide an overwhelming CAP and I’m hoping to put this theory to the test.

Malaya

Singapore continues to be pounded from the air. CVN is being deliberate here and I think it’s going to pay off for him. At Johore Bahru a shock attack takes moderate casualties but reduces the forts to 4. Most of my forces are waiting in Singapore where I plan to make the final stand.

India

The 19th Bomb Group based at Calcutta has reached full strength. I’m planning to move it forward to Rangoon, which has almost reached a level five airfield. From there, they can either bomb the 33rd Division or industrial targets in Indochina. An RAF Air Headquarters and two base forces currently at Mandalay are ordered to Rangoon to support this effort. I will be scouting south with small land forces to make sure I have plenty of time to evacuate this force before Rangoon falls.

China

Outside Yenan, the Japanese shock attack again. My troops inflict severe damage, but this time are pushed back into Yenen. I do have several fresh corps in Yenen that should be able to offer some resistance. I also have a couple of corps en route from further south to bolster the defenses here. CVN seems to be focusing most of his effort in Northern China, which will force me into the defensive here. I am hoping to find an opportunity in Central or Southern China.

Capt Henry_MatrixForum -> RE: Novices in the Pacific: Capt Henry (A) v cvn65 (J) (5/16/2006 3:14:20 AM)

January 15, 1942

South Pacific

It is with great relief that I can report that the 2nd Marine Division has safely reached Noumea and is beginning to unload. At least one force of substance is now holding the island. To the Northeast, the 114th RAF Base Force arrives at Luganville and begins improving the base. The South Pacific now actually has some forces in place to manage.

Philippines

At Clark Field the Japanese Army stages another shock attack. This one gets 1 to 1 odds and lowers the forts from 3 to 2. Almost 400 of my troops are lost. Over 900 Japanese soldiers fall. At Naga, another shock attack fails to get good odds but does not suffer heavy casualties. CVN how outnumbers me 5 to 1 at this location.

ABDA

The three battleships are back at Tarakan and deliver another long bombardment. In a nuisance reprisal, the Adelaide and Marblehead with two DDs bombard Menado, destroying two Zeroes. A small group of Betties attack Samarinda and score one hit on the runway.

Malaya

The 60 Nells are back at Singapore. More casualties are reported amongst the defenders. They are quite discouraged by the lack of support from the outside world. At Johore Bahru, my level 4 forts hold against a shock attack by 18,000 troops against my 3,600 defenders.

China

At Wuhan, my regularly scheduled sweep nets three Nates in return for two I-16s. At Nanning, some Nells attack the 28th Chinese Corps. My concentration of forces against this city is proceeding and I am conducting bombardment attacks until the concentration is complete.

Capt Henry_MatrixForum -> RE: Novices in the Pacific: Capt Henry (A) v cvn65 (J) (5/16/2006 3:14:50 AM)

January 16, 1942

Philippines

24 Kates and 23 Vals are reported over Manila. The port installations are damaged and I believe the final blows have been inflicted upon the AVD Childs. The Childs has been sitting in Manila Harbor with 99 system damage for quite some time but has refused to sink. Three more bomb hits will likely take care of this. Carrier aircraft also strike at Clark Field, along with Betties, in support of ground forces there. Later in the day, 68 Kates and 39 Vals strike the 31st RCT. I’m not sure if the full KB is here, but it is certainly a good sized carrier force. There must be at least three carriers to deliver this many Kates. Amphibs arrive of Tacloban and begin unloading. Finally, after a lengthy resistance, Clark Field falls to a shock attack that achieved 5 to 1 odds. All forces retreat to Manila.

ABDA

CVN is starting to move against the north shore of Borneo. Several CA’s conduct a bombardent at Brunei. East of Borneo, the Gudgeon attacks the CVE Hosho, but after an agonizing wait reports that she has failed to score. In much happier news, the O24 reports that she has scored one torpedo hit on the CVE Taiyo. This is certainly encouraging news. Kates from the Philippine carrier force hit Force Z at Balikpapan at extreme range. 23 Kates bomb the POW and Repulse, scoring several hits. Little damage is inflicted as my armor holds. I order Force Z south to Australia as the KB now knows where I am and would certainly enjoy destroying the most powerful battleship currently in my inventory. Kates also attack several cargo ships at Balikpapan and inflict serious damage on the Siantar. North of Borneo, CVN bombards Brunei again.

Malaya

Airstrikes continue at Singapore. At Johore, my forts are reduced to zero by a shock attack by almost 18,000 troops. I expect the base to fall to the next attack.

India/Burma

Blenheims out of Rangoon conduct an attack on the heavy industry at Hanoi. No scores this time, but I’m hoping to improve upon this.

China

At Nanning, I conduct my first deliberate attack on the position. I do not achieve good odds but do determine that there are less than 15,000 Japanese opposing me.

Kapten Q -> RE: Novices in the Pacific: Capt Henry (A) v cvn65 (J) (5/16/2006 4:21:47 PM)

My two cents. I see that you are deploying much of your LCU assets forward early and to isolated areas as Canton, Noumea and Rangoon, these locations can be easily cut off and hence your LCU will be destroyed neting the jap easy victory points.

I would suggest you build up PH, Australia and India before you venture out into the unknown and when you do make sure you bring along enough LBA power to blow the jap out off the skies and out off the water.

I am not saying you should not build these places but perhaps with less important LCU just in case the japanese hammer drops on you, you can not stand up against the hammer until mid 42 at the earliest if the gods favor you.

(AF base >4 + aviation regiment or base force equivalents) * 2+ suporting bases one can be your uber CVTF = levelbombers 100% and no AV problems for your 200+ fighters and 200+ bombers = unlimited power = certain victory.

You can do this in several places but it takes a bit of time, safer to do this in an rear area and then start from there.
India>Burma>Indochine and Malaya
PH>Palmyra and Christmas>Secure sealanes to South pacific and australia>Central pacific
Australia>New Guinea>Philipines skip the Solomons
Australia>Timor>DEI

You will crush everything with airpower the LCU and Navy are a mere means of securing bases from where you can apply your force.

You only have two goals 1 Denie the jap the resourses 2 Secure bases close to the jap mainland so that you can apply the force. The path to theses goals can be varied but manageble by -44 if the jap does not defend properly

Remember, nothing can stop the force! Read this excellent link http://www.matrixgames.com/forums/tm.asp?m=1100163

Capt Henry_MatrixForum -> RE: Novices in the Pacific: Capt Henry (A) v cvn65 (J) (5/25/2006 5:45:15 AM)

After an unanticipated real life intrusion into the more important world of WITP, I'm hoping to have more time for the war again.

Thanks for the comments, Kapten. I certainly agree with your thoughts on forward deploying in Rangoon. The only reason I have units there is to avoid the malaria in Burma. I have not moved any ground units from India into Rangoon and do not plan to have any air units in Rangoon when (not if) it falls. I have small forces thrust south from Rangoon to provide advance warning of any land approaches to Rangoon which, at least in my mind, should give me time to evacuate the base and take up a new position close to Mandalay. I just don't want to suffer attrition while I wait for CVN to make his move. I also started the SEAC Chinese units across the mountains from China at the start of the game and am looking for them to arrive sometime in mid-February. All new forces arriving in Karachi will be assigned to defend India and I'm considering having a couple of Chinese Corps move back to India. I am also converting Australian Blenheims or Hudsons to Beauforts so that they can carry torpedoes against an invasion of India. I'm unsure as to the relative importance of Ceylon, but have decided to focus my initial efforts on the Indian mainland rather than an island. To my untutored eye, the Calcutta, Diamond Harbor, Dacca, Chadpur quadrangle seems to be a good point to defend from. It's malaria free, has a rail link to Karachi, and is mutually supporting. I'm also defending the other major bases in India but have not got major forces at the ports with an air rating under 2 as I believe that if CVN captures one of these bases I should be able to use my air power against it and keep him from building it up. I've also got all the Dutch minelayers back in India carrying mines as many places as possible. I spent about a month mining Rangoon just to be a nuisance and am now focusing on India.

I think you are right about Canton. I will look at pulling back the RCT I have situated there.

Noumea is a calculated risk I'm running based on previous WPO experience with CVN's style of play. I believe he will secure the Solomons, something he has not yet begun to do, before moving south.

In Australia, I'm focusing a lot of energy on building up Darwin and the bases on the eastern coast. I will have several Australian Divisions in place before the end of January. In another calculated risk, I'm transferring some forces from southern Australia to assist with defense in the north.

The Admiral Spruance AAR is a good read.

Thanks for all the thoughts. I'm sort of learning as I go so appreciate any advice offered.

Phillipines/ABDA

The Japanese bombardment of Brunei continues. Martins out of Balikpapan strike at this force but fail to score any hits. Amphibious forces are also active throughout the area. At Guiuan, a force begins unloading troops which will surely soon conquer the undefended base. A similar report is received from Ormoc. Forces reported landing yesterday at Tacloban attack and capture the base. In the air, Betties strike at my forces on Balikpapan. In the Philippines, the 41st PA Division is attacked by both Army and Navy bombers and suffers 42 casualties.

Malaya

A modest force of Nells strikes the Singapore airbase to little effect. On the ground, the gateway to Singapore is opened as Johore Bahru falls to a shock attack.

China

My training program over Wuhan continues as 39 Chinese fighters darken the skies. Only six Nates rise to my challenge. One Nate is shot down and one I-16 also falls.

Central Pacific

A small force of Nells appears to have been positioned on Wake Island for the purpose of launching raids on Midway. 8 bombers struck this morning. If CVN is going to strike with a small force like this, it might be a good point for me to get a Marine fighter squadron.

Philippines/ABDA

Landings continue at Ormoc and Guiuan. Both bases will fall to an assault at the end of the day. A Japanese bombardment force also hits Kuching to start the day. Later, the S-39 strikes back against a convoy and puts to torpedoes into a cargo vessel. CVN closes out the day with a deliberate attack at Naga. My defenders continue to hold but the force against them is getting stronger.

Malaya

CVN gets 125 bombers over Singapore today. One Catalina is destroyed at the seaplane base
India/Burma

A few Blenheims out of Rangoon bomb the heavy industry at Hanoi, scoring one hit. Other bombers launch and hit the 33rd Division again. I don’t think I’m doing much, but it is good training.

China

41 Chinese fighters sweep over Wuhan today with each side losing one plane. The I-16 squadron is starting to get their experience into the 60s. At 70, I intend to stand them down for a bit and move another squadron up.
